일상 속 사물의 재인식을 통한 조형표현

Abstract

A Study of Fiber Constructions through Reinterpreting Daily Objects From past to present, human life has been unfolded in utterly various forms. It used to be explained under large perspectives like social structures in the early 20 century Modernism, but now different approaches have been recommended since the development of civilization. Human life today is influenced by increasingly complex factors, and its understanding requires rather individual and diverse values. Accordingly, people are now expressing their stories of lives through day by day segments, not comprehending their lives as a whole. Engaged with such social flow, expressive boundaries in art are gradually expanded and changed. In the past, visual art was served for recording and representing the real world, or for revealing ideal and metaphysical concepts. On the contrary, artists nowadays are taking interests in extremely personal topics acknowledging various aesthetic values, and adapting private interpretations of daily life as an aesthetic subject matter, which had long been neglected. Fundamentally, human life is a continuation of daily life, a base where nothing ever happens without stepping on it. However, some tend to disregard its values, for it is given to us in a daily basis. Most do not study ordinary things in depth, nor project thoughtful meanings to them. Some even yet has tendencies of understanding our beings or discovering logics through a vast scale of stories with conventional views. I think that we can rather have clues to understand our lives as they are through trivial scenes in daily life. Every day life contains traces built up day after day, and brings out our-true-selves without any filter. We can approach to bigger ideas by understanding fully our ordinary aspects from daily lives beforehand. The purpose of this study is to examine such perspectives carefully and to verify whether 'daily life' is a valuable aesthetic subject to visual artists. As specific means to support the purpose, I investigated the philosophical and aesthetic values of daily life in human life, and through new visual languages, focused on recovering physical values of daily objects often neglected before. Based on such processes, I want to refresh detached emotions in our time, and to enlighten diverse artistic views. Details of this study are as below. First, various concepts of daily life were examined by theoretical approaches. The concept of daily life unfolded within philosophy and aesthetics was investigated with the flow of history, and art history was studied to understand how daily life had been expressed in arts. During case studies, analysis was conducted on three cases, one in which daily objects directly appeared, daily experience became a motif, and daily space was expressed. Consequently, 'daily life' as the topic of this study was reviewed as a subject matter with unlimited potentials for artistic expressions. Second, artistic techniques were examined as methods for visualizing 'reinterpreting daily objects' in artworks. Two processes, 'expanding scales' and 'transforming textures', were intensively examined to recover neglected values. For this, representational artworks through art history were studied for visual effects obtained from expanding scales of small and trivial objects, and from transforming original textures to something new by modular combining of art materials. Third, actual works were created reflecting results given from theoretical study on the topic and case study on expressive techniques. Total of 8 artworks were made for the purpose of awakening visual, auditorial, and tactile senses from familiarities, and recovering forgotten values of daily objects. As artistic objects, I took forms from daily objects such as a drawer handle, shoestring, button, electronic fan propeller and screw using materials like paper holder, compressed rubber, push pin, bell, and dress pin for peculiar textures created through repeating process. Furthermore, Experiments on expanding scales based upon ratio was accompanied to maximize the effect. This study has provided me motivations to keep flexible attitudes towards life, placing interests in trivial daily aspects regardless of how complicate our society is nowadays, and made me realize that daily life is a valuable connecting point between life and art. It has brought me a time to recognize my own being by recollecting my daily life as well. Overall, the study has become a formation for me to develop my own creative visual languages in the future. I hope the study would lead to broaden boundaries and understandings in fiber art.;과거로부터 현재에 이르기까지 인간의 삶은 매우 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 그러한 모습을 20세기 초 모더니즘 속에서는 사회적인 구조나 거대한 담론 안에서 설명하려 하였으나 오늘날에는 문명의 발달과 함께 과거와는 다른 접근을 필요로 하게 되었다. 인간의 삶은 점점 더 복잡한 요인들에 의해 좌우되고 있으며, 인간에 대한 근본적인 이해는 좀 더 개별적이고 다양한 가치들을 통해 접근이 가능하게 되었다. 이에 따라 인간의 삶을 총체적으로 파악하기 보다는 매일 매일의 세분화된 단위를 통해 이야기하고자 하는 모습을 보인다. 이러한 사회 흐름과 맞물려 예술에서도 표현영역의 변화가 일어나게 되었다. 과거에는 예술이 현실세계에 대한 객관적인 기록이나 재현을 하는 것이었고, 때로는 형이상학적 개념에 대한 표현으로 나타나기도 하였다. 한편 오늘날에는 다양한 미적가치들 속에서 지극히 개인적인 주제에 대한 관심을 보이며 그동안 주목하지 않았던 개인적인 일상의 개념도 미적대상으로 논하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 근본적으로 우리의 삶은 일상의 연속이며 이를 바탕으로 하지 않고서는 어떠한 일도 일어나지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 일상이란 늘 그 자리에 있는 것이기에 우리는 그 가치를 간과하곤 한다. 우리는 보통 익숙하고 낯익은 것에 대해 깊이 있게 탐구하거나 큰 의미를 부여하지 않는다. 여전히 격식이 갖춰지고 거대한 이야기를 통해 세상의 이치를 발견하거나 인간을 이해하려는 모습을 보인다. 하지만 오히려 일상의 작고 소소한 경관을 통해 우리는 꾸밈없는 삶의 모습을 조금이나마 발견할 수 있다. 일상은 매일 퇴적되는 삶의 흔적을 고스란히 담아내고 있으며, 그러한 모습이 곧 우리 자신을 여과 없이 드러내주고 있는 것이다. 우리 삶 속 평범한 일상에 대한 이해와 공감을 통해 좀 더 거시적인 이야기에 접근할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구자는 이러한 시각을 주의깊게 살펴보고 조형 활동을 통하여 ‘일상’의 영역이 예술가에게 미적대상으로서 표현 가치가 있는 것임을 확인해 보고자 한다. 이에 대한 구체적인 방안으로 일상의 모습이 우리의 삶 속에서 어떠한 가치를 가지고 있는지 알아보고 일상 속에서 무심코 지나쳤던 사물의 존재가치를 새로운 조형언어를 통해 되찾아 주고자 하였다. 이러한 조형화 과정을 통해 현대사회 속의 메마른 감성을 환기하며 다양한 예술적 시각을 일깨우고자 한다. 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이론적 접근을 통해 일상에 대한 여러 개념을 살펴보았다. 철학과 미학 속에서 전개되는 일상의 개념을 역사의 흐름과 함께 알아보고, 예술에 있어서는 일상이 어떻게 표현되어 왔는지 미술사적 흐름 속에서 살펴보았다. 사례연구에 있어서 일상의 사물이 직접적으로 등장한 경우, 일상의 경험이 창작활동의 모티브가 된 경우, 일상의 공간을 표현한 경우로 나누어 분석하였다. 그리하여 본 연구의 문제제기인 ‘일상’은 예술표현으로서 무한한 가능성을 가진 주제임을 검토하였다. 둘째, 표현기법에 관한 연구에서는 일상의 가치를 회복하기 위해 ‘일상 속 사물의 재인식’ 이라는 주제를 조형작품으로 시각화하는 방법을 연구하였다. 낯설어진 일상을 경험하기 위한 표현방법으로 ‘규모의 확대’와 ‘질감의 변환’이라는 두 가지 문제를 집중적으로 살펴보았다. 작고 사소한 사물의 규모를 확대하면서 얻어지는 조형효과와 일상의 사물을 반복적인 단위소재로 조합해서 독특한 질감을 나타내는 조형효과를 작가들의 작품을 통해 연구, 분석하였다. 셋째, 주제에 관한 이론적 연구와 표현기법의 사례연구를 토대로 실제작품을 제작해 보았다. 시각적, 청각적, 촉각적으로 익숙해진 감각을 새롭게 일깨우며, 무관심 속에 방치된 일상적 사물의 존재가치를 되찾아주는 것을 목적으로 총8점의 작품을 제작하였다. 작품의 소재가 되는 손잡이, 신발 끈, 단추, 프로펠러, 나사 등은 일상에서 흔히 접하는 사물의 형태를 취하였으며, 할핀, 압착고무, 투명 장구핀, 방울, 시침핀 등의 작은 단위의 재료를 사용하여, 단순 반복적인 과정을 통해 이질적인 질감으로 완성하였다. 더불어 시각효과를 극대화하기 위한 작품 규모의 확대비율 설정에 대한 실험도 함께 해보았다. 본 연구자에게 ‘일상 속 사물의 재인식을 통한 조형표현’연구는 복잡한 현대사회 속에서 작고 사소한 일상의 모습에 관심을 기울이며 삶을 살아가는 유연한 태도를 가져보는 계기가 되었으며, 일상이 우리의 삶과 예술을 녹여내는 소중한 연결점임을 깨닫게 해주었다. 또한 연구과정을 통해 스스로의 일상을 되돌아보며 나의 존재를 확인하는 경험을 제공받았다. 앞으로 일상을 주제로 조형 활동을 함에 있어 독자적이고 창의적인 조형언어를 다지는 기반을 갖게 되었다. 섬유전공자로서 제안하는 본 연구 작품이 섬유예술에 대한 해석이나 표현영역의 확대로 이어지기를 기대해본다.
