자연에 근원한 생명에너지에 관한 자수조형

Abstract

자연은 인류 이전부터 이 땅의 바탕이 되어 온 근원적인 존재이다. 자연의 가치는 물질적으로 환산할 수 없으며 개인이 소유할 수도 없는 것으로, 자연의 견고함과 아름다움은 인간이 어머니로부터 느끼는 따뜻함과 편안함을 연상시키는 모체가 되기도 하며 자생력의 상징, 혹은 종교적인 영원성과 숭고함을 나타내는 경이로운 존재로 인식되어 왔다. 현대 사회는 이러한 자연으로부터 많은 이익을 창출하며 경제적 가치를 높이고 부의 축적과 함께 삶의 질(quality)을 윤택하게 만들어 왔다. 인간의 기반이 되어온 자연은 무한한 삶의 개선책을 제공하며 인간의 가치를 상승시켜 주었고 인간이 주체성을 찾고 그 가치와 잠재력을 발견하는데 중요한 시발점이 되었다. 여기서 인간은 어떠한 대상을 통해서 본질을 찾으려하는 본성을 드러낸다. 이것은 직관을 통해 비가시적인 본질을 발견하려는 인간의 본연적인 성질의 표출로, 인간이 찾고자 하는 본질은 우주에 속하는 모든 대상과 자아를 관통하여 생명력으로 존재한다. 이에 본질로서의 생명의 고찰로 자연의 현상에서부터 접근하기 시작하였고 그 과정에서 번식력이라는 잠재적인 힘을 가진 씨앗의 형태와 인간의 자아라는 본질의 형태가 세포를 형상화하는 유기체의 형태를 기본으로 시각화되고 있음을 알게 되었다. 본 연구는 생명력이 내재하는 유기체의 조형적 형태를 탐구함으로써 생명에 내재하고 있는 생명에너지를 현대 자수 작품으로 표현할 수 있었으며 그 특성인 생동감을 작품으로 표출해 내는데 그 목적이 있다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 자연현상과 유기체의 정의에 대해 알아보았고 둘째, 생명에 대한 고찰로 앙리 베르그손(Henri Bergson)의 생명철학을 근거로 하여 생명과 유기체와의 관계에 대해 살펴보았다. 셋째, 현대미술과 섬유예술에서 유기적으로 표현된 생명에너지 작품들을 찾아보았고 이를 토대로 하여 자연에 근원한 생명에너지를 4점의 자수조형 작품으로 제작하였다. 작품표현은 씨앗의 형태를 단순화한 원의 형태로 조형화함으로써 상징적으로 표현하였고 작품제작에 있어서는 작품 4점의 화면바탕으로 골판지(corrugated cardboard)를 사용하여 중첩시켰다. 자연이 가지는 본연의 성질은 다양하지만, 가공되지 않은 모습이야말로 근원으로서의 자연의 모습을 가장 원초적으로 보여준다고 생각하였고 이러한 느낌을 살리기 위해 자연의 색을 그대로 보여줄 수 있으면서도 친환경적인 재료를 사용하고자 하였다. 또한, 생명력의 소멸과 생성이라는 내재된 속성을 뒷받침 해 주기 위한 골판지로 된 상자의 이용은 생명의 유기성의 부각에 효과를 더해 주었다. 골판지 안쪽의 굴곡적 형태는 유기적인 형태의 화면구성을 위해 효과적이었고 굴곡의 방향성을 살려 연결한 골판지의 조각은 다른 재료와의 유기적인 연결성을 찾기에 적절한 표현수단이 되었다. 표현재료에는 견사와 면사, 금사, 은사, 합성사가 사용되었고 실의 용도로써 실로 감은 철사(coiled wire), 밧줄, 스판과 레이스 소재의 천을 찢어 사용하였다. 생동감의 은은한 표현을 위해 사용 된 금사와 은사는, 작품을 설치했을 때 빛의 방향에 따라 생명의 존재표현에 효과를 더하였으며 선적인 요소 표현에 철사를 결합하여 사용함으로써 유기적인 형태의 입체적 표현을 시도할 수 있었다. 자수기법은 평수(satin stitch), 징금수(couching-stitch), 점수(dot-stitch), 매듭수(frenchnut-stitch), 사슬수(chain-stitch), 기러기수(Y-stitch), 버튼홀 스티치(buttonhole-stitch)가 사용되었으며 작품의 형태표현을 위해 이러한 기법들을 응용하였다. 불규칙적인 수의 표현 속에서 기법의 사용은 화면 속의 질서 확립과 흐름의 이동을 표현하기에 적합하였고 평면에서 입체로의 표현을 용이하게 해 주었다. 본 4점의 연구 작품들은 각기 다른 상자들의 부분을 모아 하나로 연결함으로써 형태를 이루고 있다. 전체적으로는 작품마다 기법과 바탕화면의 재료를 통일하여 작품 간의 관계의 유사성을 살려 안정감을 주었고, 개별적인 작품 속에서는 주된 색감을 강조하여 조화로운 화면을 구성하면서도 시선이 집중될 수 있도록 포인트를 주었다. 각각의 독립된 작품들은 정형화 된 형태는 아니지만 조형작업을 통해 생명에 내재한 에너지의 역동성을 연구해 볼 수 있었다. 자수의 다양한 표현 방법과 재료를 이용하여 유기적인 표현을 해 봄으로써 다음과 같은 결론을 얻게 되었다. 첫째, 각양각색의 실을 사용함으로써 움직임이 있는 유기체의 생명력을 표현할 수 있었으며 생명의 역동성을 질감으로 표현하기에 효과적이었다. 둘째, 실의 움직임은 자율성을 갖는 유기체의 특성을 표현하기에 적절하였으며 자수기법의 사용은 화면에 통일감을 주어 작품 속의 규칙을 찾아주었다. 실로 표현된 내재된 혼란의 심리적 표출은 수의 기법과 반복되는 중첩을 통해 심적 욕구 해소의 방법으로써 내면을 안정시키는데 도움이 되었다. 셋째, 골판지를 사용하여 자수 작품을 제작함으로써 형태의 변형과 확장을 통해 입체적인 작품을 표현할 수 있었으며 단순한 바탕의 확장을 넘어 의식의 확장을 부른 계기가 되었다. 넷째, 실과 바늘이라는 매개체를 이용하여 해체된 골판지 상자를 다시 연결하는 과정은 매개체의 물성을 이용하여 유기체의 변화하는 모습을 표현하기에 효과적이었으며 현대 자수의 표현방법과 형식의 범위를 확장시킬 수 있었다. 일반적으로 자수는 대중에게 연약하고 곱다는 이미지로 인식되어져 왔다. 자수의 전통성에서 벗어나기 위해 사용했던 딱딱하고 거친 골판지는 자수표현재료로는 쉽지 않은 선택이었다. 본 연구자는 버려진 것에 2차적 생명을 부여할 수 있는 섬유의 특징을 살려 자수 중심의 조형작품을 연구하였다. 이것이 하나의 표현 사례가 되어 자수가 현대예술에서 갖는 의미가 표현의 다양성을 통해 미(美)적 가치를 추구한다는 조형표현의 인식으로 확대되기를 기대하며 이와 같은 연구를 바탕으로 생명표현에 대한 보다 깊이 있는 연구와 다양하고 창의적인 시도가 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.;The nature is the essential being becoming the basis of the earth before the human history. As the value of the nature cannot be counted as in material and is the thing which the individual cannot have, the solidity and beauty of the nature can become a matrix reflecting warmness and comfort which the human feel from mother, and it was recognized as the wonder being to express the symbolism of self-growing power, or religious permanence and sublimity. The modern society created many profits from this nature and have made the quality of life be prosperous with enhancing the economic value and accumulating of wealth. The nature that has been basis of human being offered the improvement of infinite life and increased the human value and became a starting point for finding the identity of human and the value and potential ability. Here, human disclose the nature finding the essence through some object. This is the essential expression of human nature discovering the invisible essence through intuition and the seeking essence of human exists as the life power by passing through all objects and self which are belonging to the universe. Thus, it was known that the consideration of life as the essence was began the access from the phenomenon of the nature and in this process the pattern of seed that has the potential power for reproduction and the essential pattern as the human self was visualized as the basis on the organic pattern embodying the cell. This research has the purpose of expressing the internal life energy existing in life as the modern embroidery work through exploring moulding pattern of organism in which the life energy indwell and to display the characteristic vividness through the work. As the theoretical background, first, the definition of natural phenomenon and organism was found, and second, it was studied the relationship between life and organism based on the life philosophy of Henri Bergson as the consideration on the life. Third, it was found the work of life energy expressed organically in the modern art and textile art, and the life energy rooted on the nature based on this was produced as four embroidery moulding works. The work expression was expressed symbolically by moulding the pattern of seed as the simplified pattern of circle, and the work production was piled up four works using corrugated cardboard as the picture basis. Even though the essential characteristic of the nature is various, it was considered that the unprocessed appearance showed the natural image as the source originally in most, and it was used the eco-friendly material and material that can show the natural color for expressing this feeling. Also, the use of box made of corrugated cardboard for supporting the internal attribute as the extinction and formation of life power added the effect on the organic emergence of life. The inside curving pattern of corrugated cardboard was effective for picture composition of organic pattern, and the fragmentation of the corrugated cardboard connected with the direction of curve became the proper expression method for finding organic connection with other materials. The expression material was used of silk thread, cotton, gold thread, spun silver, and synthetic thread, and the use of the thread was used of coiled wire with winding the thread, rope, the tearing of the fabric which is span and lace material. The golden and silver thread used for the soft expression of the vividness added the effect on existing expression of life according to the direction of light when the installation of the work, and the solid expression of the organic pattern using this to the wire for the expression of linear element. The embroidery method was used of satin stitch, couching-stitch, dot-stitch, frenchnut-stitch, chain-stitch, Y-stitch, and buttonhole-stitch, and these methods were applied for model expression of the work. The use of the methods in the expression of irregular stitch was proper to express the establishment of order in the picture and movement of flowing, and facilitated the expression to the solid from the plane. These four research works are composed of the pattern by connecting to one from gathering each different box. Overall, it was stabilized to display the similarity of relationship between works through the unification of material of background picture and method by work, and it was given the point to be concentrated of the eyes as well as harmonic composition of emphasizing on the main color sense in the individual work. Each independent work was not a formative pattern, but it was researched the dynamics of internal energy in life through moulding work. The following result was gained by organic expression using various expression methods and materials of embroidery. First, it was expressed the life power of organism with a movement using various colored threads, and it was effective to express the dynamics of life as texture. Second, the movement of the thread was proper to express the characteristic of organism having autonomy, and the use of embroidery method offered the rule in the work through giving the unity on the picture. The psychological expression of internal confusion expressed by thread helped to stabilize the inner side as the method of psychological desire resolving through repeated overlapping and method of the stitch. Third, the production of embroidery work using corrugated cardboard could express the solid work through modification and expansion of the pattern, and offered the opportunity to expand the consciousness beyond the expansion of simple basis. Fourth, the process of connection to fragmented corrugated cardboard box again using the medium such as thread and needle was effective to express the changing figure of organism using properties of medium and could expand the expression method and pattern scope of modern embroidery. In general. the embroidery was acknowledged as the image of weak and pretty to the public. The hard and rough corrugated cardboard used for escaping the traditionality of embroidery was not easy selection for embroidery expression material. This researcher studied the moulding work focused on the embroidery by expressing the characteristic of fabric to grant the secondary life to the things which were no longer needed. It is to expect that the meaning of the embroidery in modern art will expand to the recognition of moulding expression seeking for esthetic value through variety of expression of the meaning as this becomes an illustration, and the further research about life expression based on this research and various and creative try shall be accomplished persistently.
