Abstract
This article analyzes Lee Haesik’s Byeolpungryu for Gayago and Jango(長鼓와 伽倻고를 爲한 別風流). It is a song created chiefly with guhtgeory(굿거리) played for folk pungryu(風流). This study aims to understand the composer’s intention better and help actual performance by examining the rhythms used in each passage and analyzing the process of undulation and dynamics changes and also functions of sigimsae(시김새). (別風流) consists of total 2 movements and 198 measures. The 1st movement can be largely divided into 3 parts (A-B-C). The beat doesn’t change, and the tempo doesn’t change, either, as ‘andante’. And the 2nd movement can be largely divided into A(Variation 1)-B(Variation 2)-C(Variation 3). Before and after the variation, a short measure bridge passage, cadenza, and perfect cadence are added. Unlike the 1st movement, the beat often changes, and the tempo, too, shows variation with ‘gaily with guhtgeory, allegretto, andantino, or largo’. The melody of Beolpungryu can be summed up as below regarding its rhythm, undulation, dynamics, and sigimsae. The rhythm has 36 patterns in the 1st movement and 47 in the 2nd. In each rhythm, various combinations are used like reduction, extension, or repetition. About dynamics, both the 1st and 2nd movements start with mf. And for ending, the 1st movement ends with mf, and the 2nd one with pp. Though the characteristics of the songs are different, if we’d say the 1st and 2nd movements are connected, the entire song starts with mf, the 1st movement is intensive, the middle and last parts show relatively gradual dynamics changes, and it ends with pp. Sigimsae uses Nonghyeon(弄絃), Jeonseong(轉聲), and Toeseong(退聲) both in the 1st and 2nd movements. Nonghyeon is for three purposes, tension maintenance, tension elevation, and tension relief, and Jeonseong is for decoration, and Toeseong is utilized for decoration and ending. Concerning playing styles, there were twelve types of traditional playing styles and sixteen types of creative playing styles including placing the finger on the stringㆍturning the string overㆍJeonseong(轉聲)ㆍYoseong(搖聲)ㆍBending Note(꺾는 음)ㆍDouble Flicking(연튕김) playing styles. Even among creative playing styles, in the first movement, a simultaneous melody (동시화음) playing style that pressed the lower string until making the sound of the string above even while plucking two sequential strings with the thumb and the pointing finger (1ㆍ2指) at the same time frequently emerged. In the second movement, the glissando playing style where for several sounds, the left hand plucked the first sound and fourth, third, second, and first fingers plucked the rest of the sounds in their sequences was often introduced. Also, as a result of analyzing the melody and rhythms of folk pungryu gutgeori and the second movement of 「Byulpungryu(別風流)」 for Gayago (traditional Korean twelve-stringed musical instrument) and Janggo (traditional Korean drum), similar melodies were discovered in seventeen parts, and regarding the rhythm, both of the pieces used five rhythms. However, folk pungryu gutgeori employed basic rhythms frequently whereas the second movement of 「Byulpungryu(別風流)」 showed diversely varied rhythms. According to the above result, Lee Haesik’s Byeolpungryu for Gayago and Jango actively uses traditional sigimsae to vitalize the mood of guhtgeory in the folk pungryu of its original. And he uses repeated rhythms to pursue unity of the entire song. Also, varying the dynamics and melodies dramatically, he adds more fun to it and adjusts it properly so that the entire song doesn’t become like just a traditional song. This song can be said to be a unique song that combines Western musical methods and the features of Gayago, one of the Korea’s traditional instruments.
