Abstract
The Summer Before the Dark, Memoirs of a Survivor같은 후기작품에서는 인류의 구원은 인간성에 대한 이해를 기본으로 동료 인간들의 시각을 확대시켜서 인류전체에 대한 책임 의식을 함양하는 것이라고 결론 짓에 된다. The Summer Before the Dark에서는 주부로서의 Kate Brown의 함계가 용이한 해결책을 용납하지 않지만 진실한 자아를 발견하려는 그녀의 추구과정 자체가 실제적 성취결과보다도 더 큰 의미를 지닌다. Doris Lessing explores the meaning and significance of the different aspects concering the fragmentation that brings about the destruction of civilization in out contemporary society. She openly recognizes that the catalyst that has triggered this crisis is the atrophy of the imagination which prevents people from seeing themselves in relation to all creations under the sun. With an emphasis on the identity of man, she takes into consideration the wide spectrum of issues in the modern community, ranging from racial problems, struggles between generations, abnormal consciousness, to politics and relationships between men and women. Under her extensive concerns about the contemporary ideologies, Lessing’s outlook on the world has changed, which has, consequently, affected her view on man. This study explores that particular view on man in Doris Lessing’s diverse fictions, from the beginning to the late period of hew literary career. Her literary goal has been to highlight and to lessen the negative effect of a huge bureaucracy that has reduced man from a living being to a simple functioning unit. Doris Lessing’s earlier works present diverse characters leading a subjected life under the suffocating confinement of social structure. The socio-political framework of the African landscape allows for the effective setting, showing the struggle between the individual and the collective group by way of racial injustice and sexual prejudice. Through heroines like Mary Turner in her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, Lessing criticizes the actions of blind submission or passive agreement to the falsified value of our surroundings; the irresponsible acts of men and women strengthens the vicious cycle of corruption and confusion in out society today. In the second novel titled, Martha Quest, Lessing describes the life of Martha, who is self-conscious, yet aware of the diverse aspects of the violent structure in the social matrix of our society. Through repetition and defiance of conformity leading to frustration, Lessing illustrated the hierarchies of violence in the multi-layered structures of our society. However the tireless efforts of the heroines toward self-recognition and freedom as well as their strong commitment to change, encourage the readers to be aware of the existence of the defying consciousness against the system. In the The Golden Notebook, one of the greatest novels written in the middle era, Lessing highlights the main interests about politics, arts, and love affairs within the broad space of Africa, England, and Russia from 1959 to 1957. In the process of depicting the collapse of the Communist Party Lessing exposes the falsehood of ideologies, and emphasizes that the revolution of consciousness should take place long before a systematic change. Through the life of writer, Anna Wulf, who was experiencing a writer’s block and a nervous breakdown, Lessing gives the readers an extensive knowledge about and a background of the inner self of man, together with the dynamic interrelationship between life and art. With and urgent feeling about the crisis in the civilization, Anna penetrates into the cause and effect of the human crisis, not only from the falsification of our social matrix, but also from the evils existing deep within ourselves. Thus aspects of the disintegration in our society is strengthened by the fragmented structure of The Golden Notebook, which enables the readers, in the end, to experience the immediate feeling and sensation of the crisis. In the light of this recognition, Lessing’s novels in the late period, such as The Summer Before the Dark and Memoirs of a Survivor, propose to the readers a concrete state of vision that can block the destruction of the civilization. It is the new historical consciousness concerning the past, present and future; such consciousness occurs with warm hearts, and puts co-operation and harmony in place of the competition between men as fellows victimized by the cruelty of life. Lessing steadfastly believes that it is important to love one another, to respect the laws of harmony, and to understand that each individual is a viable part of the whole. And the perseverance and trials of the heroines can be passed on to the next generation in the dynamic development of social history. In The Summer Before the Dark, the confined situation of Kate Brown will allow for no easy solution. Her quest to find the authentic self has a meaning far beyond that of attaining the actual harvest of her life. In another novel of this era, the Memoirs of a Survivor, Lessing imagines the situations after the destruction of the civilization in detail. She claims that the destructive aspects of a post-modern society is the result of the excessive competitive spirit. In an attempt to advise the readers to take part in the process of self-realization through harmony and co-operation, she appeals to the readers to discard the prejudice about what is real and what is possible, and to change their perspective about the world. In conclusion, what Lessing has pursued foremost in her literary career, having viewed the future of a mankind with a prophetic perspective, is a life commitment, and she, in her role as “an architect of the soul,” as she herself has defined, enlarges the thoughts of her reader with a total vision. As a major writer of past-war Britain, she is very competitive in the charting and diagnosing of that era’s social, political, and intellectual complexities, deeply penetrating into the studies on the reflections of the mind and the lives of individuals, and is very free in her recourse to the wide range of novelist approaches and techniques; from the traditional perspective of all that she has portrayed in her works, I believe that Doris Lessing will be and enduring resource of all those who still hope to make the fragmented world into a whole.
