『삼국유사』 영어 번역본의 문제점 분석

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to categorize translational problems of two English versions of Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) and to suggest a way to deliver the contents and value of the original text by analyzing the present English versions focusing on "Kii-pyŏn" (Section of Marvels). To examine translational problems the book titles, translated words such as historic figure and official titles, and sentences in translated books were analyzed. The cases that translators provided additional explanations or omitted the contents of the original text were also reviewed. Moreover, the research examined whether the English versions contained useful information and sufficient annotations for target readers who are assumed to be graduate students or scholars in East Asia Studies. The study also included analysis on the method of Romanization for Korean language, expressions of unique terms in Korean history and the accuracy of additional information by two translators. The result of the study is as follows. First of all, due to the limitation of translators' academic knowledge about legend, folktale, Buddhism and historical facts, translation errors in English words and sentences were found. Second, two English editions do not exhibit the intention and value of Samguk yusa which is considered to be the most important historic documents about ancient three Korean kingdoms. Third, sufficient information and annotations are missing. Korean translated books, Japanese translated versions and a wide range of secondary literary on Samguk yusa should have been referred for the better understanding of the original text. To supplement accuracy and special knowledge of English editions, it would be essential for many experts in each academic area to participate in English translation work. The limitation of this research is that translational problems in other sections were not reviewed. Also, recent English version was published about thirty years later than the first translated book. It would be considered to compare the contents. The readability of the English editions, moreover, was not covered in this study. Those limitations should be in consideration for the future research.;본 연구의 목적은 현재 영어로 번역되어 있는『삼국유사』중「기이」편의 영어 번역을 분석하여 번역본에서 반복되어 발견되는 문제점의 유형을 파악하고 바람직한 번역 작업의 방안을 찾는 것이다. 이를 위해 책 제목, 본문 속 단어와 문장의 번역에서 문제가 되는 예, 번역자의 자의적인 해석에 의해 특별한 이유 없이 원문이 삭제되거나 찬자의 주가 생략되어 있는 경우를 살펴보았다. 또한 본문의 내용과 관련하여 다양한 학설과 논의가 충분히 반영되어 있지 않은 점과 로마자 표기법, 한국 고유 용어의 번역, 보편적인 용어의 사용, 인용 문헌의 표기, 번역자에 의해 추가된 자료의 정확성을 검토하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 번역자들은『삼국유사』가 담고 있는 다양한 분야에 대한 전문지식이 부족하여 단어와 문장의 번역에 문제점을 나타내었다. 둘째,『삼국유사』문헌 자체의 가치를 충분히 이해하지 못하여 한국 고대의 문화를 제대로 전달하지 못하였다. 셋째, 두 권의 번역본은『삼국유사』의 한글 및 일본어 번역본, 관련된 문헌과 각 조목에 대한 기존의 연구 자료를 참고하지 않아 본문 내용만으로 부족한 부분이 보완되지 않고 있었다. 이를 보완하기 위해 앞으로의 번역 작업에서는 신화, 역사, 불교, 영어 등 각 분야의 전문가들이 참여하여 정확성과 전문성을 갖춘 영어 번역본이 탄생되어야 할 것이다. 본 논문에서는「기이」편 외 다른 조목의 번역을 검토하지 못하였다. 그리고 두 영역본이 출판된 시기의 차이를 고려하지 않았고 영어 번역의 가독성을 검토하지 못한 점에서 한계를 지닌다.
