한국 창작 뮤지컬 『언약의 여정』("The Covenant of Journey")의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

Attention is soaring high for Korean original musicals. Not only have Korean original musicals increased in quantity, but also quality-wise have they grown so much that they do not lag behind in comparison with Western blockbuster musicals. And yet, the current status of research on musicals music is rather thin on the ground. Musicals are not mere simplistic forms of theater added to music, but a combination art form and genre which incorporates music, story, dance, acting, stage mechanisms, and many more artistic and technical elements. Therefore, the musical features that only musicals possess need to be understood in alignment with the factors aside from music. This thesis deals with the analysis of the apparent musical characteristics of the Koreanoriginal musical "The Covenant Journey", which I, the author, have executed the rearrangement for the entire score during their 2006 performance round. In doing so, I would like to research with focus on how such musical characteristics are applied onto the combined art genre which are musicals, within which acting, dance, and music mingle together. By conducting analysis on the apparent musical devices in the 21 songs total, I have attempted to present an overview on what effects these characteristics have within the piece. "The Covenant Journey" debuted in 2005 and completed a national tour with an added Hong Kong leg in 2009. In 2010, starting from LA, it is currently touring in the major cities of the US, such as Philadelphia, Washington, and New York. As such, it is a purely original musical that continues to engage different directors each year, not afraid of new musical approaches. Despite its relatively low capital funding, it has succeeded in a continuous string of performances, compared to Western blockbuster musicals. This might be held as evidence that unique factors exist in this musical. Due to the rapid transformationof society, communication to the younger generation is capped, and this problematic topic is transformed into a realistic storyline. Thus, bydrawing out emotional relevance in the viewers, and by producing in the English language, the mental barrier for foreigners was minimized. Also, the music performed by approximately 60 musicians fuses classical and electronic components, and achieves harmony in sound. The musical elements unique to The Covenant Journey, derived from analysis, are as follows. Firstly, four themes which are announced in the overture mark their presence during various times of the whole musical, thereby symbolizing persons, situations, and mental states, and contributing to driving the story ahead. Secondly, throughout the overture, portents are utilized in various ways. This frequent use of portents or omens is one of the characteristic methods for drivingthe music forward, unique to this composer. Thirdly, simple forms of arrangement and accompaniment often appear, for the purpose of lyrical delivery. Fourthly, characteristic melodies and instrumental timbre stand out, and serve to describe the scene. Fifthly, a variety of genres is manifest, ranging over Swing Jazz to Blues, Tango, Rock Ballad and more, in order to express moods that fit the scene. Recently, Korean original musicals are attracting attention from over the world. Not only are there cases where Korean original musicals enter into Broadway, but the domestic audience has reached a sophistication sufficient to pick and choose good musicals. Accordingly, research on music that constitutes the main pillar in musicals must adjust to this pace. This thesis is a research on an actual piece of original musical work, and its focus is on analyzing how the utilized mechanisms within musicals music make themselves known throughout the whole work; this constitutes the raison d' être of my thesis. Furthermore, I hold the opinion that professional musicals musicians must be nurtured via research on the side of education etc., in an active and lively manner. As a concluding remark, I would wish that this thesis and its research will greatly contribute to musicals musicians and the production of their work.;뮤지컬이야말로 현대의 대중사회에 가장 부합되는 대중적 문화 장르이다. 한국에 있어 뮤지컬은 한 도시를 도시답게 만드는 것이 뮤지컬이라는 전통성 보다는 21세기 문화의 시대를 맞아 콘텐츠 사업의 성장과 맞물려 전성시대를 맞이하고 있다. 현재의 한국 뮤지컬은 다른 공연 산업이 정체상태를 벗어나지 못하고 있는 것과는 달리 예술 영역으로 인식됐던 뮤지컬은 점차 유망한 대중문화산업으로 자리 잡고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한국뮤지컬 개발을 위한 연구와 체계화된 자료가 미비하고, 뮤지컬 음악에 대한 연구 자료는 턱없이 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 한국 창작 뮤지컬 사상 처음으로 제작 단계부터 해외시장을 겨냥하여 전곡을 영어가사로 제작된 『언약의 여정』을 연구대상으로 하여 이 작품이 한국 뮤지컬 역사에서 갖는 의의와 역할을 짚어보고, 이 작품에서 나타난 음악적 특징들을 분석함으로써 이러한 음악적인 특징들이 연기, 춤, 음악이 어우러진 복합 예술 장르인 뮤지컬에서 어떻게 적용되는지를 중점적으로 연구하고자 하였다. 총 21곡의 음악에서 나타난 음악적인 장치들을 분석함으로써 이러한 특징들이 작품 속에서 어떠한 효과들을 나타내고 있는 지를 파악하려고 했다. 『언약의 여정』은 2005년 초연된 이후, 세계 곳곳에서 현재까지 계속되고 있는 순수 창작 뮤지컬이다. 외국의 블록버스터 급의 뮤지컬과 비교해서 많은 투자 자본을 가지고 만들어진 뮤지컬이 아님에도 이렇게 꾸준한 공연을 하는 데는 이 뮤지컬만이 가진 요소들이 있다는 반증이다. 사회의 급격한 변화로 젊은 세대들과의 소통의 단절이라는 현실적인 스토리는 관객들의 공감을 이끌어 내고, 영어로 제작되어 외국인들에게 거부감을 최소화했다. 또한 60여명의 연주자들이 연주하는 음악은 클래식적인 요소와 전자적인 음향의 조화를 이루고 있다. 『언약의 여정』의 분석을 통해 나타난 뮤지컬만이 지닌 음악적인 요소들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서곡에서 등장한 4가지의 테마가 전체 작품의 곳곳에 등장하여 인물이나 상황, 심리를 나타내며 극의 스토리 전개에 도움이 되었다. 둘째, 전곡에 거쳐서 다양한 방식으로 여러번 전조가 되는데, 이러한 빈번한 전조의 사용은 이 작품의 작곡자만의 음악을 전개하는 특징 중 하나이다. 셋째, 가사 전달을 위한 단순한 형태의 편곡과 반주형태가 많이 등장한다. 넷째, 장면을 묘사하는 특징적 멜로디와 악기의 음색이 돋보인다. 다섯째, 장면에 어울리는 분위기 표현을 위해 스윙재즈, 블루스, 탱고, ??, 발라드 등 장르의 다양성이 나타난다. 20세기 이후 한국의 창작 뮤지컬들이 세계적인 주목을 받고 있다. 브로드웨이에 진출한 창작 뮤지컬도 있을 뿐 아니라, 관객들도 좋은 뮤지컬을 찾아보는 수준에 이르게 되었다. 이에 따라 뮤지컬에서 중심축을 이루고 있는 음악에 대한 연구 또한 그 발전과 발맞춰가야 할 것이다. 본 논문의 연구가 실제 창작 뮤지컬 작품의 연구이고, 그 연구의 초점 또한 뮤지컬 음악에서 사용된 장치들이 작품 전체에 어떻게 드러나고 있는지를 파악한 것이었기 때문에 의미가 있다고 본다. 이 외에도 전문 뮤지컬 음악가를 양성하기 위한 교육적인 측면 등의 연구도 활발히 진행될 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 본 논문의 연구가 뮤지컬 음악가와 한국 창작뮤지컬 제작에 큰 보탬이 되기를 바람한다.
