Abstract
For artists, memories are not just a remembrance of the past. Instead, it works as the whole of reality or accumulated experience to provide a motif or methods of their artworks. Human beings react to an external stimulus to acquire information and knowledge, which are considered and processed to reside in the memory system. Feelings and sentiments aroused during the course are recalled, recognized and reconstructed to be expressed outwards. Artists use this certain process to redefine conceptions of the experience and feelings against the context of culture and society to which they belong and then, to apply images created from the process to works of art. In other words, the memory, as the whole experience of an artist, is the basis of his own art activities, and the meaningful experience that the artist selects from his own memory is translated into a creation with substantial image or metaphors. The paper is to identify and interpret meanings that objects of daily experience in the memory may have. As the objects represent accumulated time, consisting of personal tastes, characters and relationships, they can function as a medium and symbol to explain traces and tendency of the owner. The paper adopts visualization of subconscious thoughts and memorized experience to present how an object can constitute as well as bring about the memory. In addition to examining the meaning of memorized objects, the paper also studies how image of the objects is re-constructed in paintings. Moreover, the paper provides a chance to think about what meanings the memorized objects have in the owner’s life, and in turn, it suggests that the memorized objects can relate to the person’s identity. To do so, this study employs the concept of "pure memory" by Henri Bergson as the standard of contemplating memory. The study defines the past as "pure memory" persisting subconsciously and examines how it is embodied into image through a certain space, place and other means. Then the conceptions of the objects in the memory are studied against the cultural and social circumstances, and various meanings that the objects represent in the art are illuminated. In terms of methodology, the study captures and applies formative features of Korean traditional paintings to express mental images in the memory. That is, the study is to adapt construction, composition and perspective of Korean traditional paintings to find a more effective way in which the image and metaphors of the memory can be represented. Finally, the research aims to analyze the meaning of memory itself through the process of thinking objects lodged in the memory. By exploring the possibilities of formative expression to embody the mental image of objects in the memory and adopting it to works of art, the study seeks to contribute to the artistic consensus that objects of daily lives can represent a meaningful part of inner life, which is an important subject of art.
