Abstract
Natural photosynthesis uses sunlight to drive the conversion of energy-poor molecules (water and carbon dioxide) to energy rich ones (oxygen and CH2O). Presently, scientists are working hard to develop efficient biomimetic photosynthesis systems toward solar-driven water splitting. In this study, we report a new self-assembled dyad for the visible-light-driven regeneration of a nicotinamide cofactor and hydrogen that involves xanthene dye. In PART I, a photocatalytic system for the generation of nicotinamide cofactor (NADH) has been constructed using xanthene dye as a photosensitizer, the rhodium complex as a molecular catalyst, and triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial electron donor. The visible-light-driven electron-transfer reaction was conducted through a photosensitizer–electron relay dyad. Rhodium complex has been applied as a hydride transfer mediator for the indirect regeneration of NADH in chemical and electrochemical systems due to its high selectivity for the regeneration of enzymatically active cofactors. We found that the conversion rate of NADH is various depend on rhodium catalysts and xanthene dyes (λ=420 nm). And xanthene dyes are quenched with TEOA, electron donor. We also confirm that rhodium catalyst, [Cp*Rh(phen)H2O]2+ is the most efficient catalyst for nicotinamide cofactor regeneration. In PART II, we study a homogeneous system for the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from water consisting of a xanthene dye as a photosensitizer, TEOA as a sacrificial reductant, and the Co-based catalyst (λ > 420 nm). Cobaloxime complexes are valuable catalysts for photocatalytic production of hydrogen. Their activity can be increased by modification of the axial or equatorial substitents, respectively. The concentration of H2 evolution is maximum at pH 7.0 and decreases sharply at more acidic or basic pH. The stability of the solution depend on solvent ratio, ACN : H2O = 3 : 1 is the best stable condition. We confirm that rose bengal is more efficient photosensitizer than eosin Y. Spectroscopic study of photolysis solutions suggests that hydrogen production occurs through protonation of a Co(I) species to give a Co(III) hydride, which then reacts further by reduction and protolysis to give Co(II) and molecular hydrogen. In the field of solar energy conversion, xanthene dyes will be applied to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and photocatalytic hydrogen production with the support of conductive matrices. It will be interesting to see where future generations of rhodium-based or cobalt-based artificial photosynthesis research leads.
