Abstract
Lee Hyo-Suk began his literary career with "The City and the Ghost" in 1928 but he passed away in 1942. Despite his short life, he actively wrote a wide array of poems, novels, plays, scenarios, and essays. Lee's works were briefly mentioned in monthly reviews or short comments in newspapers and magazines. However, they began to be analyzed intensively after Paek Chul and Yu Jin-Oh made a huge effort. The previous research results on Lee were divided into three categories since then. The first category deals with sexual consciousness in Lee's works. It reveals that these novels articulate sex as a human instinct without reserve. Mainly, early theses handle this issue, contributing to establishing the position of Lee's novels in the literary history. On the other hand, the second category concentrates on the inner structure of his novels, thus trying to prove their characteristics organically and logically. Lastly, the third category takes a closer look at the issue of colonial modernity which is lively discussed recently as well. It defines that modernity brought out by Japanese imperialism was highly influential upon various aspects including ambivalence in Lee's works. It seems obvious that these precedent studies widened the spectrum of interpretation on Lee's novels but they have limitations in that they failed to criticize his whole works from the consistent viewpoint owing to the problem with discovery of his works and canonization of "When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom". Recently, many critics take a positive view of his literature's diverse characteristics but these analyses are not free from the binary classification dividing literature into engagement and pure. This dichotomy considers Lee as the author who immersed himself in his inner self and therefore interprets the implication of his works merely passively. In order to revise and to complement these researches, this study seeks to delve deeply into politics in Lee's novels. Politics in this study originate from Jacques Rancière's 'Politics of literature'. Contrary to a common belief that politics are the exercise of power, Rancière regarded them as constituting a sphere of certain experiences. It is this sphere where distribution or redistribution of speech and noise, and visibility and invisibility takes place and therefore the matter regarding this sphere is always controversial. Rancière termed it 'distribution of the sensible' which can be divided into two categories. The first one is police that unifies a community and distributes each position and function hierarchically. The other is the process of equality, impeding police distribution and forming a new identity, which Rancière neoterically defined as politics. Hence, implication of Politics of Literature is not authors' engagement nor request for political activity. It means that literature per sep performs political behavior and also involves in the division of times and spaces, speech and noise, and visibility and invisibility. Literature rechristens objects and makes gaps between words and identities, thus yielding possibility to escape from a certain condition. As such, Lee's novels do not accept the identity on demand by his contemporary discourses and even create the new aesthetic sensible to avoid it. In order to prove it, this study classifies Lee's oeuvre into three categories and analyzes each category chapter by chapter: theoritical socialism in chapter Ⅱ, modern enlightenment in chapter Ⅲ, and Japanese imperialism in chapter Ⅳ. Clause A in each chapter discusses the problem with police and its limitation, focusing on Lee's representation of alienated others. Clause B, on the other hand, explains how the political self, established by distribution of the sensible, generates Politics of Literature. Chapter Ⅱ explores mainly at the novels handling the socialism-related issue. Lee was regarded as a companion author at the early stage of his career. However, his novels evidently articulate differences from proletarian literature KAPF pursued. They criticize socialism that already became a great discourse by representing plural others that are not situated within any class. Moreover, through the affirmation of the sense, they refuse ideas that are hierarchical and fixed, suggesting ethical subjects overcoming closed equality. Chapter Ⅲ concentrates on the novels criticizing enlightenment: urban and rural novels. One of the significant characteristics of modernity is indeed enlightenment that has a firm belief in infinite development driven by reason and maintains the order by alienating things that are not encompassed by totality. What Lee's novels try to do is summon alienated others under the name of enlightenment to debunk the myth. As such, his novels negate the dichotomy between city and nature or modern and premodern and take a critical stance on the enlightenment viewpoint by highlighting boundary subjects. Chapter Ⅳ covers the novels written in his later life or in Japanese. The isolation of the colonized who became absorbed into the slogan of Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere reveals that consent and universality are unfeasible in these novels. Furthermore, the dramatization of the colonized who struggled with the situation different from Chosun in these novels manifests asymmetric equality under the agenda of 'the colonized of the empire'. As such, Lee's novels sharply criticize imperialism and embody impregnability against nationalism at the same time. Admittedly, having long been related merely with his own life, not based on his texts, studies on Lee's works have yielded negative interpretations. His works indeed encountered severe criticism for the reason of the seemingly lack of sincerity that fixed unfavorable assessment, defining their main trait as escapism. However, it should be noted that Lee never embraced the demand of the time. He should rather be seen as a significant literary figure restoring the others who were rebuffed by division of police, and imposing a new identity upon them, in order to materialize literary politics.;이효석은 1928년에 「도시와 유령」으로 등단하였고 1942년에 사망하였다.
