Franz Kline의 회화를 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 예술 분야의 각 장르들은 서로 오버랩 되는 표현영역이 확대되어 점차 그 경계선이 모호해지기도 하며, 서로 융합되는 경향을 보이기도 한다. 예술이 접근하기 어려운 독립된 하나의 개체에서 벗어나 실생활의 한 부분으로 자리하면서 회화, 조각, 건축 등의 순수예술과 패션의 접목이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 즉, 현대 조형 예술의 각 장르들은 패션과 긴밀한 연계 속에서 자유로운 표현과 조형적인 면을 추구하며 그 표현 영역을 확대 시키고 있는 것이다. 예술의 세계와 디자인 세계의 만남, 상응, 경의, 차용의 단계를 거치면서 예술과 패션 사이의 조화의 영역을 넓히고, 예술가들과 디자이너들 사이의 개념적이고 스타일 적이며 미학적인 동조를 보여주고 있다. 이것은 회화를 단순히 의상에 덧입히는 것에서 발전하여, 작가가 표현하고자 하는 것을 새로운 표현 기법의 개발을 통해 패션과 접목, 재구성함으로써 작가의 정신을 보다 깊이 이해할 수 있는 중요한 역할을 한다. 이에 본 연구는 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)의 대표 작가인 프란츠 클라인(Franz Kline 1910~1962)의 회화를 모티브로 선택하여 1950년대 이후 그의 대담하고 구조적인 굵은 선 획으로 표현되는 'Black-and-White Painting'의 흑백회화를 의상으로 나타내고자 하였다. 프란츠 클라인 회화에서 나타나는 직선, 사선들로 이루어진 선들은 하나의 건축적인 구조를 만들고 배경의 여백을 적극적인 형태로 활용하면서 구조적인 이미지를 나타내며, 프란츠 클라인은 이를 통해 광대한 공간과 대조되는 강한 긴장감을 표현하고자 하였다. 프란츠 클라인은 그의 회화에서 두드러지게 나타나는 검은색 선과 함께 흰색에 대한 중요성도 강조하면서 흑과 백은 동등한 가치 지닌다고 말했으며 작품 활동 후기에 흑과 백이 아닌 다른 색채의 사용으로 표현영역을 넓히고자 하였다. 이러한 회화의 특성을 현대자수기법으로 표현하여 회화에서 나타나는 이미지들을 현대패션에 적합한 모티브로 개발하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 작가의 정신과 그것을 통해 표현되는 회화의 조형성을 응용하여 패션에 적합한 소재의 표현을 통해 창의적인 의상디자인을 제안하고, 이를 통해 패션이 예술의 또 다른 표현 방법이 될 수 있음을 보여주고자 한다. 이에 본 연구는 프란츠 클라인의 작품을 시대와 조형적 특성을 중심으로 분석하고, 회화가 현대 패션에 적용된 사례를 살펴보았다. 또한 표현 기법은 테이핑(taping)과 스티치(stitch)를 이용한 현대자수기법으로 현대자수기법의 개념과 역사, 재료와 기법에 대해 알아보고 현대자수가 적용된 사례에 대해서도 알아보았다. 이를 토대로 프란츠 클라인 회화에서 특징적으로 드러난 대담한 선의 구조를 가진 흑백회화를 모티브로 재구성하여 그의 강렬하고 구조적인 이미지를 보여주는 현대자수 의상을 총 8점의 작품으로 제작하였다. 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 회화에서 나타나는 형태와 색채 등 조형적인 특성을 현대 패션 디자인과 결합함으로써 독창적인 디자인 창작의 모티브가 되고, 이는 디자이너의 단순하고 실용적인 패션을 발전시켜 사회적 범위 내에서 미학적인 가치를 가질 수 있도록 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 프란츠 클라인의 작품에서는 건축적인 대담한 선의 표현과 흑백회화의 특징적인 표현이 두드러지게 나타났다. 프란츠 클라인 회화의 건축적이고 구조적인 붓의 휘두름과 색채의 표현을 모티브로 구성하여 나타냄으로써 프란츠 클라인의 회화가 의상디자인의 예술적 모티브로 적합한 표현 요소임을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 프란츠 클라인의 특징적인 선을 문양으로 개발하기 위한 기법 개발과정 속에서 패브릭 테이프, 코튼사, 양모 펠트 등 다른 여러 가지 재료와의 혼합을 통한 현대자수기법을 활용하고, 현대자수 기법과 함께 핸드 페인팅, 핸드 펠트 등의 표현 기법을 함께 응용함으로써 풍부한 질감으로 예술적 표현이 가능하였다. 이와 같은 기법이 회화의 터치 감과 번지는 듯한 효과를 나타내기에 효과적임을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 프란츠 클라인은 그의 작품 세계에서 검은색 선을 중심으로 한 흑백회화가 두드러지게 나타났으며, 작품 활동 후기에 표현 영역의 확대를 위해 기존의 흑백회화에 색채를 도입하였다. 이와 같은 색채의 특성을 모티브에 반영하고 제한적으로 색채를 사용하여, 깊이 있고 모던한 이미지를 색채의 표현을 통해 의상에 나타내기에 적합함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 프란츠 클라인 회화의 건축적인 선과 흑백회화의 특징적인 표현을 현대자수기법으로 의상에 접목함으로써 그의 작품에서 보여 지는 대담하고 구조적인 회화의 이미지를 의상의 모티브로 표현 할 수 있었다. 이와 같이 회화의 한 부분, 또는 전체를 의상의 모티브로 개발함으로써 회화와 패션과의 결합을 통한 새로움의 창조는 무한하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 앞으로 새로운 기법의 개발과 소재, 디자인의 다양성을 통해서 보다 창의적이고 예술적인 표현의 발전이 이루어져 의상에 예술적 가치를 부여하고, 프란츠 클라인의 회화가 앞으로 현대 의상 디자인에 있어 다양한 모티브로 발전할 수 있도록 연구, 개발되어지길 바란다.;The overlapped expression area of each genre of modern arts expands and its border has been vague or tends to be blended. As art becomes a part of real life away from an inaccessible separated entity, there has been active grafts between fashion and high arts such as painting, sculpture, architecture, and so on. In other words, each genre of the modern formative arts is expanding its expressional realm, seeking form liberal expression and formative feature through a close contact with fashion. Getting through the steps of encounter, correspondence, respect, borrowing between the world of art and design, the harmonious realm of art and fashion broadens, showing conceptual , stylish, and aesthetic agreement between artists and designers. Away from simply put painting on clothes, this plays an important role in understanding artist's spirit more in depth, combining painting with fashion by re-constructing what the artist intends to express through new representation techniques. Accordingly, selecting the painting of Franz Kline(1910~1962) who is a representative painter of Abstract Expressionism as motif. this study tried to make 'Black-and-White Painting' after 1950, which expresses his bold and structural thick stroke realized in clothes. The lines composed of straight line and biased line in the painting of Franz Kline make one architectural structure, show structural image by utilizing the blank of the background in the active form. In this way, he tried to express a strong tension, which contrasts with a vast space. Franz Kline said that black and white had equal value, emphasizing the importance of white with outstanding black line in his painting. In the latter part of his work, he tried to expand his expression realm to other colors, neither black nor white. The image shown in the painting is developed as a proper motif to modern fashion , expressing this features of his painting with modern embroidery techniques. The purpose of this study is to suggest creative clothing through expressing materials suitable for fashion, applying the spirit of the artist and its plasticity and to show that fashion can be another way of expression of art. This study analyzed Franz Kline's work of art focusing on era and formative features, and searched for examples that painting was applied to fashion. Moreover, as for representation techniques, within modern embroidery techniques using taping and stitch , its concept, history, materials, technique, applied examples were examined. Based on this, re-constructing Franz Kline's 'Black-and-White Painting' as motif, which characterizes bold structural line, 8 works of modern embroidery clothes were manufactured showing his strong and structural image. The conclusions of this study are as follows. Firstly, the combination of modern fashion design and the formative characteristics such as shape and color in the painting can be a motif of creative design and give aesthetic value to designer's simple and practical fashion within social range. Secondly, architectural bold expression of line and characteristics of 'Black-and-White Painting' are noticeably shown in the painting of Franz Kline. It turns out that Franz Kline's painting is a proper artistic component of expression of clothing design by constructing Franz Kline's architectural and structural stroke, and color expression as motif. Thirdly, in the process of developing technique to change Franz Kline's characterized line into pattern, modern embroidery techniques were used by combining it with other materials such as tape, cotton thread, and wool felt. In addition, hand painting and hand felt were applied to modern embroidery technique with rich texture and it proves that these techniques are effective to in expressing touching feeling and spreading effect. Fourthly, Franz Kline noticeably showed 'Black-and-White Painting' which emphasized black line in his works of art and introduced other colors to his existent 'Black-and-White Painting' in order to expand his expressional realm in the latter part of his works. It is shown that thoughtful and modern image can be reflected on clothing through the expression of colors by reflecting this characteristic of color on motif and using limited colors. This study could express Franz Kline's bold and structural image of painting as motif of clothing by combining his architectural line and characterized expression of 'Black-and-White Painting' with fashion through modern embroidery techniques. Likewise, it turns out that the creation of novelty through combination of painting and fashion is indefinite by developing a part or whole of painting into the motif of clothing. It is expected that artistic value will be added to clothing with the progress of more creative and artistic expression through the development of new techniques and diversity of materials and design. It is desirable that Franz Kline's painting should be researched and developed as various motifs in modern clothing design in the future.
