According to the attachment theory, human beings have a strong instinct toward a warm and secure relationship from birth. At the beginning of lifetime, attachment relationship driven by this instinct is initiated from a special pattern of relationship between the infant and its main caregiver like mother. The infant maintains proximity to mother, the attachment figure, and takes it as ‘a heaven of safety’ that it runs for in crisis and as ‘a secure base’ in safety for exploring the world. In addition, the threat of separation from or loss of mother itself provokes violent resistance. In the same way, people always want to stay close to God and approach God by visiting a church or praying. In crisis, they take God as a heaven of safety and find refuge in God. Furthermore, God plays the role of a secure base that gives confidence and stability to people in their life in the world and their religious life. We can see that separation from or loss of God provokes the same violent emotional response as that induced by the loss of a human attachment figure. Thus, Kirkpatrick maintained that God can be an absolutely adequate, perfect and ideal attachment figure who can satisfy all the requirements and functions of an attachment figure in the attachment theory, and furthermore, can be a 'substitute attachment figure' when a human attachment figure is not available. A secure or insecure attachment style (avoidant, ambivalent) established by mother’s care during childhood is represented internally, influences the person’s life through the entire lifetime, and is even transmitted to the next generation. However, recent studies show that the attachment style may be changed later by positive experiences with other secondary attachment figures or material changes in family. In particular, the discovery of ‘earned security’ suggests the possibility that those of insecure attachment style may regain the resources of safety. Studies on attachment and religion also suggest two types of possibility. This is explained by the established correspondence model saying that the secure attachment group who has received a positive image of God and faith in God from the parents will show the attachment style consistently in their personal religiosity. In comparison, the position of the compensation hypothesis is that those who failed to form secure attachment from the parents look for God for emotional compensation distinguished from their insecure relationship pattern. According to this mechanism, the ambivalent attachment style and the avoidant attachment style that have a negative model of self are more likely to find a new relationship with God. With regard to the model of other as well, the ambivalent style having a positive model of other showed a higher tendency of experiencing God as an intimate being and having intense religious experiences or sudden conversions than the avoidant style assuming a negative position. Contextual factors also induce people to look for God as an attachment figure on a compensatory dimension. Faced with separation from or loss of attachment figures such as parents, spouse and romantic partner, people seek God as an attachment figure as a compensation for the loss. Moreover, complex and highly stressful crises that people experience during their adulthood reveal the limitation and inability of human attachment figures weak and prone to mistakes. The cultural factors of contemporary industrial society, which make people feel empty and lonely and are unable to satisfy individuals’ desire for relationship, may also accelerate the establishment of relationship with God. Accordingly, God, as a secondary attachment figure following the parents as the primary attachment figures, can be a 'compensatory attachment figure' filling and compensating people’s needs sufficiently rather than merely substituting for human attachment figures. This process is also influenced by the individual vulnerability of insecure attachment style and contextual factors that lead people to seek ideal God who gives unconditioned love. What is more, experience in a positive relationship with God as an object of compensatory attachment may help one regain security by providing resources of safety not available from the parents.;애착 이론에서 인간은 태어날 때부터 따뜻하고 안정적인 관계에 대한 강한 본능을 가지고 있다고 본다.
