Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine vocabulary learning strategies for learning Sino-Korean words, especially on the Relative Synonym words, for primary Chinese learners of Korean. In this study, we classified Relative Synonym words into two categories, made a list of each sub-class, and looked for vocabulary discovering strategies that learners used according to each classification. In the study, the Relative Synonym words were firstly divided into two categories: words with completely different meanings and words with partially different meanings. Further, the words with partially different meanings have been classified into three parts. The first classification is words that have another meaning in Korean apart from the common meaning. The second classification is words that have another meaning in Chinese apart from the common meaning. And the third classification is words that have additional meanings both in Korean and Chinese apart from the common meaning. According to Schmitt(1997), the vocabulary discovering strategies used in this study were divided into two groups. The first group is the Determination Strategies group, which includes the strategies of analyzing affixes and roots, checking for L1 cognates, guessing from textural context, using a bilingual dictionary, using a monolingual dictionary and using word lists. The second group is the Social Strategies group, which includes the strategies of asking the teacher for an L1 translation, asking the teacher for a paraphrase or synonym of a new word, asking the teacher for a sentence including the new word and asking classmates for the meaning. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, more than 70% of the primary Chinese learners of Korean recognized the necessity of learning Sino-Korean words and 53.3% of the subjects said that studying the Sino-Korean words from the first level of Korean language is good. Secondly, when Chinese learners at the beginning level confronted words that they did not know, the most common strategy they used was reference to a Korean-Chinese dictionary. Finally, there was a difference in study strategies according to the classification of the Relative Synonym words, but the difference was not remarkable. Through this study, we analyzed the vocabulary discovering strategies of learners after specially classifying the Relative Synonym words. Since this study conducts the aforementioned experiment mainly on primary Chinese learners, the results of this study will be useful data as a guideline for primary learners.
