반복적 일상성을 반영하는 실험 타이포그래피 표현 연구

Abstract

Experimental typography is adding creative visual expression to typography which primarily uses characters to convey its message. Such addition of visual expression enables more effective communication by complementing the limitations of using just characters to express ideas. Experimental typography plays an important role as an implied means of communication. In today's information age, at every second and every moment we are bombarded with so much irrelevant information. Thus, linguistic communication, as the most accurate and objective method of delivering information, has expanded its scope for interpretation in line with the diversification of media in the modern times. In addition, various modeling expressions and diverse visual expressions were developed to satisfy people's visual appetite. In this way, character as a communication tool has come to possess visual and formative functions that go beyond just conveying information through characters. Started as a means of communication, character has evolved over a long period of time and has gone beyond the linguistic means to possess a formative function as well. In recognition of these changes, the need for a new concept of experimental typography has been felt, and experimental efforts are continuously being made and its scope also being expanded. For the potential of the field of visual expression, developmental research of various typographical expression needs to be continued, and experimental typography will be able to fully establish itself as an effective communication tool. In this research, as a visual motif, the lines of the public transportation route, which connotes the repetitive nature of daily routine, is used to study the way of expression in the field of experimental typography. The phrase, a 'daily routine,' implies that something is repeated every day. Most people eat, go to work, study at school, and go back home to sleep at a designated time. Although not all people's lives are exactly the same, their life today is similar to what will happen tomorrow. As the phrase implies, our daily life is very repetitive. The development of science and technology especially binds us even more to our repetitive lives in the structured systems of the modern world. In exchange for material prosperity and convenience, our lives have become very mechanical like a bus that travels the same route every day. A bus is destined to travel the same route every day. It passes the same buildings, crosses the same bridges, and meets the same people. The people who use such means of transportation are bound to become mechanical as well. They ride the bus at the same time, pass the same stations, and arrive at the same destination. The daily route of these people has come to take after the routes of public transportation like that of the bus or the subway. While their lives might have become more convenient, at the same time, their lives have been changing into a repetitive machine performing a daily routine. In this way, correlation of repetitive daily routine and public transportation was founded, and as a graphic element, the shape of public transportation route that made repetitive movement was thought to act as a visual motif for the experimental typographical expression. In this paper, as an experimental typography's method of expression, the formative feature created by transportation route's repeated circulation was visually reconstructed to study the possibility of development and application of experimental typographical expression reflected through the repetitive daily life. To reflect the repetitive daily routine, the shapes formed by repetitive routes of public transportation like the subway, the bus, the airline, and more were used to create experimental typography. Although the air route may seem far removed from the cycle of daily routine, it shares a similar routine characteristic as it travels a predetermined route. Such experimental typographical work was produced into three books and ways to apply it to posters, ads, and etc. were explored. This research project intended to explore and to evaluate the possibility of the development of experimental typography and its methods of expression.;언어적 전달기능을 우선적으로 가진 타이포그래피에 창조적 시각표현을 더한 것이 실험적 타이포그래피다. 이러한 시각적 표현은 문자의 한계를 보완하여 더욱 효과적인 의미전달을 가능하게 해준다. 이렇게 실험적 타이포그래피는 함축적인 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로서 역할을 한다. 오늘날과 같은 정보화 시대 속에서 우리는 매초 매 순간 전혀 관계없는 정보를 수용하면서 살아가고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 정보 전달에 가장 정확하고 객관적인 방법인 언어적 커뮤니케이션으로서, 글자를 통한 타이포그래피는 현대에 이르러 매체의 다양화에 따라 범위가 확대해석 되었다. 또한 다양한 조형표현과 시각적인 욕구를 충족하기 위한 다양한 시각표현도 발달하게 되었다. 이렇게 커뮤니케이션의 도구인 문자는 정보를 전달하는 언어적 기능이상으로 시각적 표현과 조형적 기능을 갖게 된다. 의사전달을 위한 수단으로서 시작된 문자는 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 발전해왔으며 이제는 언어적 수단을 넘어서 조형적 기능까지 담당하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 인식의 변화에 따라 새로운 개념의 실험적 타이포그래피의 필요성을 느끼게 되었고 실로 많은 실험적 시도들이 계속해서 이루어지고 있으며 그 영역의 범위 또한 확대되고 있다. 시각표현의 분야의 발전 가능성을 위해 다양한 타이포그래피 표현의 개발연구가 계속해서 필요하며, 실험적 타이포그래피는 커뮤니케이션에 있어 효과적인 의미전달 도구로서 강하게 자리 잡을 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 실험적 타이포그래피 표현 연구를 위한 시각적 모티브로서 반복적 일상성의 의미를 가진 대중교통 노선도의 형태를 활용하고자 하였다. 일상이라는 단어는 ?날마다 반복되는 생활?이라는 의미를 담고 있다. 대부분의 사람들 모두 그들만의 정해진 시간에 식사를 하고, 직장을 다니고, 학교에서 공부를 하며, 집으로 돌아가 잠을 잔다. 모든 사람들의 삶이 자로 잰 듯 똑같진 않지만 그들의 오늘은 내일과 비슷하다. 말 그대로 우리의 일상은 매우 반복적이다. 특히나 과학기술의 발전은 조직화된 체계 속에 현대인을 구속하고 더욱더 반복적인 삶을 살아가게 하고 있다. 물질적 풍요, 생활의 편리함을 갖게 된 대신 우리 삶은 지극히 기계적으로 변해있었다. 정해진 노선을 반복적으로 왕복하는 버스가 대표적인 예가 될 수 있다. 한 대의 버스는 매일 같은 길을 지나게 되어있다. 똑같은 건물을 지나고, 똑같은 다리를 지나고, 똑같은 사람들을 만난다. 이러한 교통을 이용하는 사람들의 삶도 똑같이 기계적으로 변할 수밖에 없다. 같은 시간에 버스를 타고 같은 정거장을 지나며 같은 목적지에 도착하는 것이다. 이렇게 일상의 행보는 버스, 지하철과 같은 대중교통의 노선과 닮아있다. 이를 이용하는 사람들의 생활은 좀 더 편리해졌을지 모르지만, 동시에 그들의 삶은 일정한 노선을 가진 기계처럼 반복적으로 변하고 있었다. 이렇게 반복적 일상과 대중교통의 상관관계를 찾았으며, 반복적 동선을 만들어내는 대중교통 노선도의 형태는 그래픽 요소로서 실험적 타이포그래피 표현 연구를 위한 시각적 모티브의 역할을 할 수 있다고 생각하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는, 실험적 타이포그래피의 표현방식으로서 교통노선의 반복적인 동선이 만들어내는 조형적인 특징을 시각적으로 재구성하여, 반복적 일상성을 반영하는 실험적 타이포그래피 표현의 개발과 적용의 가능성을 연구하고자 한다. 반복적 일상성을 반영하기 위해 대중교통인 지하철노선, 버스노선, 항공노선 등의 반복적 동선이 만들어내는 조형적 형태를 활용하여 실험적 타이포그래피를 제작하였다. 항공노선의 경우는 일상의 움직임과는 거리감이 있어 보이지만, 지정된 대로 움직이는 노선을 사용한다는 점에서 그 특징을 가지고 왔다. 이러한 실험적 타이포그래피 작업을 각각 책에 적용하여 세 권의 책으로 작품을 제작하였고, 그 외 포스터, 광고 등을 통한 적용의 가능성을 연구하였다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서는 실험적 타이포그래피의 표현개발 및 그 가능성을 찾아보고자 한다.
