Abstract
This study aimed at exploring female writers' duel attitudes towards families by inquiring into how discourses on families in the 1970s were developed in women's novels of the same period. Especially, Park Wan-seo and Oh Jeong-hee, who made their debuts as writers around 1970, showed well the contrasting aspects of discourses on families in the 1970s. The study, therefore, examined discourses on families in that period based on the two writers' works, and then discussed the duel attitudes towards family ideology expressed in the works, internalizing and ruling out family ideology. In the 1970s, Korea achieved rapid modernization and a remarkable growth. As the nation began its industrialization in earnest, social structure and the structure and role of families underwent lots of changes. Discourses on families in the 1970s and female writers' duel attitudes toward family ideology were summarized as follows. To begin with, due to the rapid economic growth and urbanization, the traditional extended family system was increasingly replaced by the nuclear family system in the 1970s. In the industrialized society, the nuclear family system was more efficient and reasonable in terms of economy and made it easier for families to move to other places. In addition, the increase in nuclear family households facilitated the family wage system based on gender-based division of labor. The system holds men responsible for supporting their families financially and women for looking after their family members at home. This, however, causes the problem with family ideology that men and women are recognized by their roles in a family. In response, women internalize or refuse family ideology in their isolated positions, showing duel attitudes towards family ideology. When their families are in danger of being dissolved due to the absence of the breadwinner or financial difficulties, women feel a threat to the safety of their family and try to protect it. However, when they look at their isolated status in the families they show the desire to escape from the families. As Korea began to develop its industries in earnest in the 1970s, people came to perceive their families as the last bastion protecting them. Familism is divided into utilitarian familism and emotional familism depending on the functions of families. Utilitarian familism brings together family members in a physical way, and emotional familism in an emotional way. Family members show dual attitudes towards utilitarian and emotional familism. When their families fail to function properly due to the absence of the members, women internalize familism through efforts to protect their families. However, when they think their perfect families are suppressing them, they desire to escape from their families and try to overthrow familism. Lastly, in the 1970s, about two decades after the Korean War, Korea had achieved an economic growth to some extent, and as a result was turning into a consumption-oriented society. As women were dominant consumers, they were sometimes described as materialistic and greedy devils. Consumption serves dual roles. It makes women behave independently because they are the ones who do shopping, and it also makes women observe their situations from an objective point of view. Economic production and consumption made women perceive themselves as the subjects of consumption and entertainment. Therefore, they reinforced their identity and boasted their families' higher social status than other families through consumption based on narcissism. Consumption for the purpose of entertainment, however, is both a conspiracy and a tool to hide the reality that women are being suppressed by the patriarchal ideology. Women's dual attitudes towards family ideology can be understood as the independent features of women placed between the responsibility to look after their families and the desire to escape from them. As Korea turned into an industrialized society and its social safety net rapidly weakened, more and more women saw marriage and families as a way to seek relief and reinforce their self identity. However, they also regarded them as institutions to restrict their behaviors. These dual attitudes towards families are well expressed in Park Wan-seo's and Oh Jeong- hee's novels. The two writers perceive and express the discourse on family differently in their works. Park Wan-seo perceives families in the aspect of utilitarianism, with the premise that home is a father's house. This is based on the premise that families, along with the economic growth in the 1970s, become the basis of living for family members. With the realization that families protect the members from external threats, women seek the safety of their families through efforts to reestablish their families when the absence of the breadwinners damages the authority of the breadwinners and puts the families in danger of being dissolved. In the meantime, due to the effects of the gender-based division of labor generated by the settlement of capitalism and the family wage system, women try to escape from their families through denying their families when they spend most of their time doing housework and shopping. In addition, when they play a role of greedy or tough mother, they look independent, but they are just disguising themselves to maintain their patriarchal families. They, on the other hand, find their true themselves when they are confined at home. This is when the heads of households lose their authority. In conclusion, Park Wan-seo internalizes or rules out family ideology based on utilitarian familism represented by a father's house, showing dual attitudes towards family. This is revealed through the realistic narrative structure. When internalizing family ideology, the narrator hides the suppression of ideology by limiting narration through delaying information or deferring judgment. In the meantime, when ruling out family ideology, the narrator criticizes a family's selfishness and discovers individuals through reflective narration based on exploration and disclosure. Oh Jeong-hee perceives families in the aspect of emotion, with the premise that home is a mother's house. This was based on the premise that families, along with the economic growth in the 1970s, should become a resting place for family members who face lots of competition in society. That is, families need the emotional bond more than physical protection, and mothers play a crucial role in forming the family bond. When experiencing the absence of their families caused by internal trauma, women seek families, but they want to escape from their families when their families remain stabilized and peaceful. When it comes to the role of a mother, children coverts a family taken care of the mother in the absence of their mothers, but they refuses to play the role of a mother when they grow up. In conclusion, Oh Jeong-hee seeks or overthrows familism based on emotional families led by mothers, showing dual attitudes toward familism. This is expressed through narrations. Emotional family affection and family bond are expressed using metonymy and metaphor. The overthrow of the suppression of emotional roles is expressed through replacing desires. Things above indicate that home is not an ideal place which provides a relief for family members. This is because the dual and contradicting features of families ceaselessly stimulate the members to behave independently and to see their situations from an objective point of view. The discourse on family represented by the role of a mother and consumptionism created by the settlement of the nuclear family system and the family wage system put women in the place between ‘familiarity’ and ‘unfamiliar fear.' The discourse on family leads women to identify themselves with others, and as a result women become attached to ‘familiarity’, being suppressed by ideology. But the suppression allows them to find the problems with the discourse and to feel ‘unfamiliar fear’ and to go forward into a liberating space as a independent beings by resisting and escaping from the families. Therefore, this study is significant in that it helps people fully understand Park Wan-seo's and Oh Jeong-hee's novels by leading them to explore female characters' desire to go forward into a liberating space as independent human beings.
