『여성의 억울함』과 『설득』에 나타난 여성주체와 감수성

Abstract

본고는 여성성과 감수성의 개념을 중심으로 18세기의 메리 울스턴크래프트와 제인 오스틴의 작품『여성의 억울함』과『설득』을 분석해 보고자 한다. 두 작가는 모두 가정의 운영자이자 국가의 수호자로서의 여성의 역할을 긍정하면서 여성의 입장을 옹호하고 대변하며 여성의 목소리내기를 실현하였던 페미니스트적인 면모를 공유한다. II장에서는 울스턴크래프트와 오스틴을 블루스타킹의 맥을 잇는 후대 여성 작가들로 분류하고자 블루스타킹 써클의 특징인 여성성과 페미니즘과의 연관을 구체적으로 고찰한다. 울스턴크래프트와 오스틴은 여성적 가치의 중심적 역할에 대한 블루스타킹의 기조를 공유하면서 여성성과 긴밀하게 연결된 감수성의 개념에 깊이 착안하였다. III장에서는 여성성의 근간이 되는 감수성의 개념을 18세기의 시대적 사상적 배경을 통해 고찰하고 감수성의 긍정적, 부정적 영향에 대해 분석함으로써 두 작가가 수용한 여성적 감수성의 개념이 어떠한 것인지 탐색한다. 마지막으로 IV장에서는『여성의 억울함』과『설득』에서 두 여주인공을 통해 감성적 여성 주체가 어떠한 모습으로 구현되고 있는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 두 여주인공의 여성으로서 주체성의 향상은 여성성으로부터 나오며 이 여성성의 뿌리가 바로 감수성이라는 논지를 본격적으로 분석할 것이다. 궁극적으로 본 논문은 울스턴크래프트와 오스틴이 두 작품을 통해 여성적 감수성을 바탕으로 단단한 내면을 가진 작품 속 여성 인물을 구현해냄으로써 여성의 주체성을 향상시켰다는 것에 그 의의를 찾고자 한다. 또한 본고에서는 울스턴크래프트와 오스틴이 작중 인물을 통해 감성적 여성의 주체성을 구현함으로써 자신들도 주체적 여성작가로서 발돋움하게 되었던 것에 주목하고자 한다.;This thesis explores the issues of femininity and sensibility in the 18th century as they manifest themselves in Mary Wollstonecraft's The Wrongs of Woman: or, Maria and Jane Austen's Persuasion. Both authors engage with feminist issues concerning the role of women in society. They advocate the importance of the ethical and moral role of the woman as manager of the family and protector of the nation. Chapter II examines the feminization of culture and the rising influence of the Bluestocking Circle. As women become the intellectual and emotional counterparts of men in the rise of the civil sphere, in which conversation with women is viewed as a source of moral improvement and refinement by many who believe in the growth of manners and politeness in the modern age, learned and literary women gain an entirely new moral and cultural prestige. Wollstonecraft and Austen can be seen as successors, whose public voice as writers was made possible by the earlier efforts of the Bluestockings and their considerable influence in the intellectual public of the "Republic of Letters." Both Wollstonecraft and Austen build on the moral and intellectual importance of women in the tradition of the Bluestockings. Both writers negotiate with a positive model of feminine sensibility that can provide a moral anchor for a rapidly changing commercial culture. Chapter III investigates the history of sensibility as it relates to the definition of the feminine in moral, medical, and social discourse. The perceived dangers of an excessive sensibility are counterbalanced by the endeavor to root moral action in feeling. Because women are often viewed to be possessed of too much sensibility, women are often more hesitant than men to claim sensibility as a feminine virtue. Nonetheless, the positive value of a sensibility that directs moral action is so great that it cannot be abandoned by either writer. Chapter IV analyzes how both heroines in The Wrongs of Woman: or, Maria and Persuasion are represented as female subjects of sensibility. This chapter aims to substantiate the thesis that female sensibility enables both heroines to become ethical and moral subjects in charge of their own destiny. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to argue that throughout the novels, both Wollstonecraft and Austen, so often viewed as completely opposite, share a common investment in constructing a positive female subject, or feminine self, rooted in a deep feminine sensibility. The authors' creation of female subjects of genuine sensibility empowers their own voices as independent feminist writers.
