Abstract
Despite his highly qualified literary achievements, Son Chang-seob’s novels have been evaluated as “meaninglessness,” “nothingness” and “nihilism”. And they also have been studied within the fields of post-war literature, especially focused on 1950s short stories. This thesis is based on the critical awareness of that the current of the studies have caused the biased understandings of Son’s novels. Strong willingness to overcome the reality, demonstrated in his novels, will be named “De-ideological aspects” in this thesis. This approach will help us find out not only active and aggressive aspects of Son’s novels, but also his consciousness found throughout his works including full-length novels written in 1960s. The concept of “ideology” is known through Louis Althusser’s studies, meaning a symbolic power that oppresses the subject (or an individual). It is exercised by social and political systems, including the military, the police, violence, patriarchy and the family as an institution. Son’s novels are the product of his literary efforts to get out of the ideological oppression. In this thesis, ideology is divided into three categories -- nation, law and capitalism -- to prove his efforts. First of all, the Chapter II focuses on the characters unable to response to interpellation from national ideology. They express their identity crisis as they deviate from the established norm. Paradoxically the deviations increase the chances of collapsing the symbolic system of national ideology. The characters have their private spaces taken by national power. It means that they were not able to have stable and autonomous places to establish their own identities. But the racersed spatiality gives them possibility to occupy public places and change them into private ones. Biographic description features their lives in which they keep escaping from the ideological oppressions of the nation. The Chapter III intends to reveal the trauma of law-and-order ideology. The characters opt for obedience instead of resistance. However, the obedience reveals the confidential nature of the law-and-order ideology, barely maintained by unconditional submission. Prisons and concentration camps are one of the most oppressed places by law and order. Crimes and illegalities, which threaten stability of law and order, are reported in the institutions despite intensive ideological oppression. Irony and grotesque are descriptive techniques to expose the cracks and collapse of the law-and-order ideology. In Chapter IV, ideology of capitalism forces the characters to be materialist. Materialism makes people extremely selfish and inhumane. But when the truth procedure leads the subject, ideology of capitalism eventually collapses and the moment of “De-ideology” comes. The place where the subject is induced by the truth is a boundary territory, which does not belong to either the inside or the outside. Humanity and interactions based on one’s whole personality are regained in the borderland. Direct narration is spoken when the subject has been led by the truth and finally liberated from the oppression of ideology of capitalism. Son Chang-seob’s novels have great literary significance in covering broad spectrum of ideology and suggesting practical solutions. Studying Son’s novels from an angle of “De-ideology” will propose a broader and deeper outlook on his works.
