Jabga is a Korean folk song that enjoyed popularity among ordinary people from the late Joseon era until the early 20th century. It is classified into Gyeonggi Jabga, Seodo Jabga and Namdo Jabga depending on region. Twelve folk songs are selected to be grouped as 12 Jabga out of long folk songs from Gyeonggi Jabga. Unlike Minyo, a Korean popular folk song which is passed down orally, 12 Jabga must have been taught by teachers until today, which include Yoosan-ga, Jeokbyeok-ga, Jebi-ga, So Chunhyang-ga, Sunyoo-ga, Jibjang-ga, Hyeongjang-ga, Pyeongyang-ga, Dalgoeri, Sipjang-ga, Cheulin-ga and Bangmul-ga. This study focused on analyzing the melody of Jeokbyeok-ga, one of 12 Gyeonggi Jabga to examine its special melody flow. Its lyrics is excerpted from one passage from <Samgukjiyeoneui> which describes that Jojo could save his life thanks to the clemency of Gwanu after being utterly defeated in a fierce battle at the Jeokbyeok(Red Cliff), safely escaping from Hwayong-do. This song is divided into four sections by the paragraph of lyrics and the analysis of melody flow found that three types of jongji pattern appear across the song. As mentioned above, this song is divided into four sections by the paragraph of its lyrics. They go as follows: "Samganeun Sujeoniyo, Jeokbyeokeun Obyeongira. (Enemy is all around the place.)" "Jeonileul Saenggakhago Sanmaae Chungeumiyo Hamaae Baekgeumira. (Recall the other day the horse is loaded with gold and jewelry.)" "Ne Amuri Salryeogo Hayeodo Saji Mothal Mal Deutgoera. (Listen to my precious clement words.)" and "Sojang Jabeusiryeogo Gunryeongjang Dushuteuna Janggunnim Myeongeun Haneulae Dallibsigo. (Dispatched a commander to chase a general, but commander's life depends on God's will.)" Jeokbyeok-ga is slowly sung in sextuple rhythm called Dodeuri Jangdan, repeating the scale of d-e-g-a-c as a main note which is used in Seodo Minyo, especially with a and d. The rhythm is much affected by the story progress. When a new paragraph begins and finishes, the rhythm equally starts and ends. It usually starts on c’-a , and this is one of the main rhythms that constitutes the song. Also, e-d is often played throughout the song. While c’-a is mostly played in the beginning section, e-d is used for smooth connection or embellishing a melody. Three types of jongji pattern are found in this song. This study classified the jongji pattern into three types including the low jongji pattern, the high jongji pattern and the complete jongji pattern. Type 1, the low jongji pattern, is composed of a-c’-a-g-e-d and often appears at the closing of one melody or at the end of one paragraph. Type 2, the high jongji pattern, is made of a-c’-a-g-a and frequently appears in the middle of the song, helping sooth flow of melody. In other words, type 1 often appears at the closing of one melody while type 2 adopts g-a which is the last note, in the middle of one measure, playing a decorative role to allow smooth flow of melody. Type 3, the complete jongji pattern, mostly appears at the part where one big paragraph finishes with a complete rest, and is consisted of e-d-e-e-d and always ends the song with d, the main note of Jeokbyeok-ga. In conclusion, this study analyzed the melody flow of Gyeokbyeok-ga out of 12 Gyeonggi Jabga after dividing the song into four sections centering on lyrics, and discovered that Gyeokbyeok-ga features a distinguishing melody, that is similar melody runs throughout the song while three types of jongji pattern are used.;잡가란 조선 말기부터 20세기 초까지 성행했던 서민층의 노래로서 지역에 따라 경기, 서도, 남도잡가로 분류된다.
