타자의식을 통한 정체성의 표현

Abstract

Because ego is a mechanism composed of flexible substances rather than with the fixed, it is able to combine and modify itself, which explains reality of the individual identity. The starting point of my work is based on these concepts and to express it. By implying these concepts into the work, this thesis supporting treatise tries to find the validity of my work of art. According to Jaques Lacan’s “Mirror-phase theory” (Jaques Lacan, 1901-1981), the creation of the ego as a subject starts from the relationship between one and the other. I will portray how Lacan’s theory has created a connection with the modern art. Than I will talk about how a phenomenon of decentralizing the subjectivity has changed the visual art’s trend and moreover, find out the perception of time and space through the alterity that has been created by the new forms of contemporary art. If the second chapter was mainly studied theoretically, the third chapter is about how these theories are reflected on my work and how my work can be explained. Techniques such as, the use of repetition in image, the meaning of installation art and the effect of various materials, are present. The last part of this thesis is structured to explain my own work which is based on the statement above. The subjectivity and the identity must be considered as a procedure of being changed and improved. The border around the self is somewhat blurred, and the self emerges more and more actively with the other. Intersubjectivity, rather than subjectivity, is a more relevant and meaningful notion. During the creation of an art form, intersubjective communication, exchange, and collaboration, which include a concept of the otherness, must be fulfilled. Therefore, production of art should be a process and expression of intersubjective communication, exchange, and collaboration. The subjectivity is composed and reconstructed by the alterity, which includes understanding, opinion, developed knowledge and perception together. Based on this argument, the purpose of the thesis and the motive and process of my art work is stated together with the theoretical background. Also, because this treatise has been made to support my thesis, I will make a chance to improve and rethink my current work through this thesis. My work is mainly based on the experiences of my child and adolescence period in a different culture. The experiences in another culture are converted in visual matters such as photography, painting, video, and etc. In this multi-cultural society, we cannot live without having inter-relationship with the others. I hope that this opportunity leads me to work with a truly opened attitude to accept the awareness of the alterity. And I do believe that this hope will motivate me to keep up my art work.;자아는 고정된 실체라기보다는 오히려 능동적으로 구성되는 것이다. 따라서 자아는 개인적인 정체성의 실체에 자신을 통합하고 수정할 수 있는 능력이 있다. 본인 작업의 시발점은 이러한 생각에 기초하였으며, 그것을 시각적으로 표현하는데 있다. 본 논문은 작품 제작 논문으로, 이러한 ‘자아’ 개념을 타자와의 관계에서 찾아보며, 작업으로 가져옴에 있어 본인 예술작품의 타당성을 모색한다. 본 논문은 위와 같은 작업의 동기와 함께 이론적 배경이 되는 방편으로 주체로서의 자아 형성은 타자와의 관계에서 비롯된다는 자크 라캉 (Jaques Lacan, 1901-1981)의 ‘거울 단계’ 이론을 현 미술 작품과 연관 지어 풀어가고자 한다. 주체를 탈중심화시키는 사상이 예술 작품 경향에 어떠한 변화를 주었는지, 다시 말해, 현대 미술에서는 타자를 통한 시공간적 지각 이론이 어떠한 미술 형태를 나았는지 탐구하고 이를 근거로 작품을 분석한다. 주체와 정체성은 계속적으로 바뀌고 발전하는 과정으로 이해되어야 한다. 경계는 희미해지고, 자기 자신(the self)은 더욱 더 타자(the Others)와 함께 활발하게 나타난다. 이는 단지 주체성(subjectivity)이라고 하기보다 간(間)-주체성(intersubjectivity)이라 하는 것이 더 의미가 맞을 것 같다. 예술 작품을 제작할 당시에 타자성을 포함한 상호-주체적인 소통, 교환, 협동, 모두가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 따라서, 자아는 타인과의 관계에서 가지는 이해, 견해, 축적된 지식, 인식, 감정과의 관계를 통해서 구성되고 재형성된다. 본인은 이러한 사고를 바탕으로 본 논문의 목적과 연구 방법 그리고 본인 작업의 동기 및 그것의 전개 과정을 이론적인 배경과 함께 제시하였다. 또한 제작 논문인 만큼 본인 작품을 제시하고 이를 통하여 현제 작업을 제정비하여, 작업발전의 계기를 만들고자 하였다. 본인은 유아시절과 사춘기 시절 모두 각각 다른 문화권에서 보낸 실제 경험을 기반으로 작업을 풀어나간다. 타 문화권에서 직접 타인이 되었던 경험들은 사진, 회화, 때론 영상과 같은 시각적 요소로 환원되어 보여 진다. 다원화된 사회문화의 구조적 현상 속에 살고 있는 우리는 타인과의 상호연관성을 벗어나서는 존재할 수 없듯이, 이번 계기가 앞으로 본인이 작업을 진행할 때, 진실 된 열린 자세로 타자의식을 수용할 수 있는 역할을 하게 하였으면 하는 바이다. 그리고 이런 나의 바람은 작업을 지속할 수 있는 원동력이 될 것이다.
