Abstract
This thesis aims to analyse the Social Criticism on David Smith's . Social condition of 1930s that the worldwide depression, the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Fascism intensified the desire of artists to respond to the social conditions of their time. While there were American artist who felt that a realist style was the only vehicle capable of carring the message of social change to the masses, by the late 1930s a significant number of artists in New York believed that avant-garde art could in fact be compatible with their social concern. However, some of the most vehement protests were those of a small number of artists who employed surrealist techniques, called 'Social Surrealism'. Social surrealism uses surrealist techniques to describe the world at large rather than the painter's ego. It deals with what is obsessive and hallucinatory to all, rather than to the artist alone. While the surrealist enigma is total and soluble only in terms of the painter's mind, the enigma of social surrealism results from extreme compression of meaning, and tends to disappear upon analysis. The French surrealist techniques of transposing object, and contents, of double image, pictorial punning, and general incongruity, are used by the social surrealists to present the real world more intensely. In , David Smith expressed his critical analysis on the 1930's of the United States in the anti-capitalism, anti-fascist and anti-war point of view by the manner of social surrealism. This was an era in which political consciousness was raised by the urgent need to survive. Roosevelt introduced legislation which was interpreted as encouraging union membership and as a result union membership increased. Even artists formed unions and societies of a political nature such as Jonh Reed Club, Artist Union and American Artist Congress. David Smith had joined in Union act and conceived radical and anti-fascist political viewpoint. consist fifteen individual medal and they are categorizes into three groups, 1. False of capitalism, 2. Nationalism of the time, 3. Realities of the war. First of all, issues on industrialism and capitalism such as monopoly, cartel, workers right and exploitation were treated. Secondly, fascism and its prevention were common cause among artists in the United State in this period. Smith defined the fascism's tendencies in the dominance of big business and its continuing contacts with fascist states and forces, censorship of works art, strangulation on institution by the courts and vitionlic editorials by the press, as well as by the presence of "law and order leagues" such as the Ku Klax Klan and expressed in his medals. Third, realities of the war and its negativity revealed in surrealistic images. Therefore, the was Smith's multi-faceted attack on a political and economic system that he saw as promoting war. More than a generalized indictment of institutionalized violence, the medals reflect the artist's keen awareness in the 1930s of the rise of fascism, the threat of global war, and the economic manipulation of the lower class.
