식물을 통해 본 감성표현

Abstract

정신분석자 융은 “예술이란 상징이다. 작가가 경험하는 것, 지각하는 것, 느끼는 것, 생각하는 것을 상징을 통해 표현하는 것이다”라고 말했다. 예술가는 자신의 감정의 이미지를 반영하는 예술작품을 만들기 위해 자신의 감정을 대신할 매개체를 찾게 된다. 가장 광범위하고 포괄적인 매개체로 자연을 들 수 있는데, 창작 과정을 통하여 자연을 단순히 모방하는 것이 아니라 그를 통하여 자기표현의 가능성을 찾아내는 것이다. 본인에게 있어 자연 속 식물, 그 중에서도 꽃, 꽃이 지며 생성해내는 새로운 결정체인 과일, 그리고 나뭇가지 등은 매력적인 창작의 매개체이다. 이러한 매개체들은 계절마다 바뀌는 오묘한 색감과 자연물에서 느껴지는 생명력을 각각 발산하였으며, 생활 속에서 얻어지는 대상물에 대한 경험과 미적 감성이 더해져 작품의 조형화에 기여하였다. 예술창조의 무한한 소재를 제공하는 자연물 가운데 일상 속 식물을 통하여 내면표현을 하는 본인 작품의 이론적 근거를 마련하기위하여 시각적으로 다가오는 조형미 이외에 심리적인 부분까지 영향을 미치는 식물의 미적 가치에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 식물의 상징적 의미가 회화작품에서 어떻게 나타나는 지를 동양의 화조화와 서양의 정물화에서 고찰하였다. 특히 화조화 기법의 기틀을 마련하고 직업화가와 문인화가들에게 각각의 영향을 끼친 황전(黃筌)과 서희(徐熙)를 통해 본인 작업의 형상화 방법을 연구하였다. 작품을 형상화하는 방법으로 본인은 일상의 경험과 감성의 매개체로 식물을 선택하였다. 이 과정에서 식물의 아름다운 조형성과 생명성은 창작의 욕구를 자극하기에 충분하였고 작업의 과정을 통해 인간적, 작가적 자존감 회복을 가능케 하였다. 동시에 전통 화조화의 상징성과 개인적인 경험을 식물에 담아 표현하면서, 평면적 구성을 염두에 둔 장식적 표현으로 나타내어 현대회화와의 간격을 좁히고자 하였다. 작품을 통해 나타내고 싶었던 편안하고 안온한 일상의 감성은 호분을 이용한 파스텔톤의 색감으로 표현하였다. 재료기법의 측면에서는 전통적인 진채화 기법을 통해 담채적 이미지를 만드는 색감표현과 선묘의 역할에 대해 서술하였다. 이는 화조화기법의 기틀을 다진 황전(黃筌)과 서희(徐熙)의 화풍을 본인의 정서와 부합시켜 표현한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 작품 속에 나타나는 식물의 미학적 근거를 정리하고 본인이 식물로부터 받은 미적 정서와 감성의 내용이 어떻게 작품 속에 투영 되었는지 살펴, 향후 전개될 작품세계의 기반을 확립하고자 하는데 의의를 두고자 한다.;A Swiss psychiatrist C. G. Jung described art as the psychological mode working with materials drawn from artist's conscious life- with crucial experiences, powerful emotions, suffering, passion, and the stuff of human fate in general. Artists try to find media to create artistic works representing their feelings. Nature can be the most comprehensive medium, which should be presented not by the mere imitating nature but by artists' creating/ representing their potential through it. To me, flowers among plants, fruits which are the products of the flowers, and branches are the attractive creative media. These media emitted seasonal color and vitality from nature added with my personal experiences and artistic sensibility, which contributed to the art works' formative completion. To suggest my theoretical foundation to my artistic works in which the inner representation from plants among nature delivered infinite material for artistic creation, I looked at the aesthetic value of plants as well as the visually approached formative aesthetic. Besides, I looked at oriental flower and bird paintings and western still- life paintings to present how the symbolic meaning of plants was suggested in the artistic works. Whang Jun and Suh Hee were examined in that they laid groundwork for the flower and bird painting skills and influenced professional painters and painters in the literary artist's style, through which I studied the formative methods in my artistic works. As I mentioned before, I chose plants as the media of experiences and sensibility from the ordinary life, in which I was encouraged by the plants' aesthetic formative features and vitality, and could recover humane/ artistic self- respect. With representing the symbolism of traditional flower- bird paintings and personal experiences in my plant paintings, and the decorative presentation implying flat structure I tried to narrow the gap between the traditional and the modern paintings. The comfortable and tranquil sensibility from the artistic works was presented in the pastel tone with the use of Hoboon, white chalk from seashells. In the perspective of material techniques, the function of tone representation and line drawing in the image of light coloring through the traditional deep- color painting techniques was illustrated. This was suggested by connecting the brushwork of Whang Jun and Suh Hee who are the progenitors of flower- bird paintings with my personal feelings. I would like to suggest this thesis as the opportunity to present the aesthetic basis of plants and to know how the personal feelings/ sensibility from the plants were reflected, which is expected to be the cornerstone of my future art works in the end.
