현대인의 억압과 고독 표현

Abstract

The modern man goes on living in an ever more complex society, constantly aware of the relationships he has with other members of the community. Throughout the course of building such relationships, he sometimes puts on facial expressions and gestures not quite true to his emotions and is subject to a certain form of repression. I was interested in such contemporary person who has to hide his real emotions and loneliness, whom I wanted to express in a symbolic way. The motifs used to symbolize therepression and solitude are dental braces and sheep mask, both of which change the true form of humans and hide them underneath. Braces are sometimes worn for therapeutic reasons, applying pressure to the teeth to align them neatly. But the painful practice of orthodontics serves mostly aesthetic purposes. I considered this to be a form of "forced beauty,"because the subject is conscious of how he is seen to others. The human character behind the sheep mask and the forced smile, conscious of the interpersonal relationships, symbolizes the state of repression he experiences within the social structure. As such, I wanted to raise an issue regarding the repression and solitude that is forced upon us by examining the specific motifs symbolizing repression and solitude on a person. This paper describes how the concepts of repression and loneliness are expressed in the work. To find out the meaning of motifs (person wearing the sheep mask, braces, forced smile, etc) in relation to the concept of repression, I looked at the characteristics of each motif and studied the psychology of the modern man who hides himself. I examined the person who lost genuineness under invisible repression and who has to force a smile by investigating the relationship between facial expression and psychological state. I also felt that there were similarities between the modern man’s loneliness and the potted plants that I used to grow. I expressed the plants’ loneliness in connection with the human loneliness through the plants growing in the pots bearing so much resemblance tohumans. The plants occupy a certain space, within which they survive by retaining water inside their firm leaves, etc, and similarities were found with the modern man living in this society. The personified plant was expressed, and in connection with my work there is a mention of artists Sang-gi Sohn and Seong-soo Kim who also painted the loneliness of plants. In a methodological study, the technique of using Asian painting colors and Western paintings’shading together to paint the people in a more three-dimensional way was examined, as well as the use of letters as formative art in the illustrated Chinese characters - popular Joseon Dynasty folk paintings - and Keith Haring’s works. In terms of perspective, Andy Warhol’s "Self-Portrait" was mentioned where the frontal shot of the face is floating on canvas. I wanted to convey through these works of humans and plants the self-portrait of ourselves who have our consciousness confined, genuineness missing, and artificial smiles faked. The motifs of repression seem forced on us, and by arranging them in a way that is both familiar and disturbing, I wanted to remind ourselves the meaning of "genuineness"that each individual has. The study was a starting point in theoretically organizing the different subject matters that I wanted to express, and will hopefully lead to further improvement in setting the right direction for future work.;현대인은 복잡해진 사회 공동체 속에서 사람과의 관계를 끊임없이 의식하며 살아가는 존재다. 이러한 공동체 속의 관계를 형성해 나가는 과정에서 인간은 자신의 감정과 다른 표정과 행동을 취하기도 하며 일정한 억압을 강요받으며 살아간다. 이 과정에서 본인은 스스로의 감정을 감추고 살아야 하는 현대 사회인의 모습, 또 그로 인한 일정한 고독을 감추고 살아가야하는 인간의 모습에 관심을 갖고 이를 상징적인 방법으로 표현해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 현대인의 억압과 고독을 상징하기 위한 예로써 사용한 소재가 치아 교정기와 양의 탈인데, 이 소재들은 인간이 가진 본래의 형태를 바꾸고 감추는 특성을 가지고 있다. 본래의 치아를 고르게 만들기 위해 철사를 사용하여 일정한 고통을 수반하며 치아에 압력을 가하는 치아 교정 행위는 치료의 목적으로 하는 경우도 있지만 심미적 목적인 경우가 많다. 이러한 심미적 목적의 치아 교정 행위는 ‘보여 지는 것’을 의식한 강요된 아름다움의 영역에 속한다고 생각되었으며, 사람과의 관계를 의식해 양의 탈을 쓰고 경직된 웃음을 짓는 인물 표현은 사회 구조속의 억압을 상징 적으로 나타낸 것이다. 이렇듯 억압과 고독을 상징하는 특정 소재들을 한 인물의 모습에 나열하는 것을 통해 우리에게 강요되어진 억압과 고독에 대한 문제를 제시해 보고자 하였다. 본 논문에서는 억압과 고독이라는 개념이 작품에 어떠한 양상으로 표현되었는가를 서술하였다. 양의 탈을 쓴 인물, 치아교정기, 웃는 표정 등의 소재가 억압이라는 개념과 관련하여 어떤 의미를 가지는지 살펴보기 위해 각 소재의 특성과 자신을 감추고 살아가는 현대인의 심리를 살펴보았으며, 보이지 않는 억압으로 인해 진정성을 잃고 강제적 웃음을 짓는 인간의 모습을 얼굴 표정과 심리 관계 연구를 통해 살펴보았다. 또한 본인은 이러한 현대인의 고독과 본인이 기르던 화분 식물들의 모습이 흡사하다는 것을 느꼈고, 인간의 모습과 닮은 모습으로 화분 속에서 길러지는 식물의 모습을 통해 식물의 고독을 인간의 고독과 연관하여 표현하였다. 각자가 점유한 공간 안에서 단단한 잎 속에 수분을 저장하고 생존하는 화분 식물의 모습에서 현대사회의 인간의 모습과의 공통점을 발견하였고 의인화(擬人化)된 의미로서 식물을 표현하였으며, 본인의 작업과 관련하여 식물을 통한 고독을 그려낸 작가 손상기와 김성수의 작업을 연관하여 언급하였다. 방법적 연구에서는 동양화 안료를 사용하여 서양화의 명암법으로 인물을 입체적으로 채색하는 표현기법과 조선시대 민화 문자도(文字圖)와 키스해링(Keith Haring)의 작품을 통해 문자가 조형적으로 사용되는 의미를 연구하였고, 구도 상에서는 본인의 작업 특성과 관련하여 정면의 얼굴이 부유하는 작품인 앤디워홀(Andy Warhol)의 <자화상>을 언급하였다. 본인이 이러한 인물과 식물 작품을 통해 제시하고 싶은 것은 의식을 구속하는 보이지 않는 구조 속에 억압되어 진정성을 잃고, 강요된 웃음을 짓고 살아가는 우리의 자화상이다. 지금 이 사회를 살아가는 사람들에게 마치 강요된 것 같은 억압의 소재들이 혼합된 인물 표현을 볼 때의 익숙함과 당혹감을 통해 인간 개개인이 가지고 있는 진정성의 의미를 환기시키고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 본인이 표현하고자 하는 소재들을 이론적으로 정리함과 동시에 앞으로의 작업 방향에 있어서 보다 발전적인 모색을 기대한다.
