Abstract
In augmented reality environment, physically-plausible interaction between real and virtual objects is useful for many applications such as training, task planning and simulations. In particular, it is difficult to simulate the physically plausible behaviors of objects in real time since the discrete nature of camera tracking and the latency may hinder accurate collision detection and response in a physically-believable manner. In this dissertation, we propose an augmented reality system using marker-based tracking which supports physically plausible interaction among virtual and real objects, realized by using continuous collision detection and constraint-based rigid body dynamics. The proposed system consists of two stages, (1) tracking real objects and rendering virtual objects, and (2) simulating the physical behavior among real and virtual objects. In spite of the limitation of tracking latency, we were able to simulate stable and physically-plausible interactions among real and virtual objects in augmented reality environments using continuous collision detection and constraint-based rigid body dynamics.
