酈道元『水經注』試論

Abstract

Shuijingzhu(The Commentary of Water Classic, 水經注) by Li Dao Yuan(酈道元) is a kind of a geographical book written in Weijinnanbeichao(魏晉南北朝). This book includes the contents that are 20 times of its original book Shuijing(The Water Classic, 水經), and it consists of geographical features, graphonomy, dialectology, historical science, bibliography and literature contents. It is possible to research it from various angles in terms of literature study such as scenery essays, folk poetry, mythology, legend, and Zhiguai(志怪). Literary approach to Shuijingzhu(水經注) is still in the early stage. Shuijingzhu(水經注) is one of the treasure houses for Chinese mythological data. The purpose of this thesis is to become the base of the discussion about Chinese mythology contained in Shuijingzhu(水經注). This thesis is the first research in Korea on Shuijingzhu(水經注). Therefore, the chapter Ⅱ examines basic elements of this book such as the relation between Shuijingzhu(水經注) and Shuijing(水經), the writer Li Dao Yuan(酈道元) and his intention, and historical backgrounds. Shuijingzhu(水經注) is written based on the increase of geographical interest, the expansion of book publishing, and the rise of literature of scenery(山水文學). The chapter Ⅲ analyzes the structure of Shuijingzhu(水經注). Its commentary which mixed quotation and creation was different from the traditional style and was a good essay itself. Also through the comparison with the narrative style of Shanhaijing(山海經), it is concluded that the narrative style of Shuijingzhu(水經注) is a kind of geographical natural history style(地理博物體). Moreover, it is heavily influenced by Shanhaijing(山海經). The chapter Ⅳ examines the mythological data of Shuijingzhu(水經注), selects mythological data among various contents, classifies them into creative myth, heroic myth, nature myth and the others, and investigates the contents of myths. Creative myth data in this book are scanty, and heroic myth and nature myth are abundant. In heroic myth, birth, genealogy, and works of well-known heroes are mentioned simple and short, but inquiry about geography helps to get more information. The stories of not well-known heroes are narrated long such as Panhu(盤瓠), Xuyanwang(徐偃王), Linjun(廩君). Nature myth is classified into astronomical myth, weather myth, geographical myth, animals and plants myth. In Shuijingzhu(水經注), astronomical myth and weather myth are scanty while geographical myth, animals and plants myth are plentiful. Geographical myth includes Kunlun(崑崙) myth and the myth of the water god and the mountain god, animals and plants myth include strange animals and the comment on their efficacy. The chapter Ⅴanalyzes the documents of Fuxi(伏羲), Linjun(廩君), and Hebo(河伯) in Shuijingzhu(水經注). Fuxi(伏羲) contains records of his birth and the appearance as the creator of the Eight Trigrams for divination(八卦). Fuxi(伏羲) has not mated with Nuwa(女媧) yet, as described in another myth written at that time. Also, in this text, it is recorded that Fuxi(伏羲) received he Eight Trigrams for divination(八卦), unlike other texts, which record that he created or drew it. Linjun(廩君) myth in this book was expanded from the documents of Shiben(世本). Then this story was changed to be more persuasive one in Jinshu(晉書) and Luyiji(錄異記). It shows that tradition of Linjun(廩君) myth was very much influenced by Shuijingzhu(水經注). Hebo(河伯) has both sides in Chinese Mythology like the good and the bad god, and this characteristic is also presented in this book. Shuijingzhu(水經注) is the book about the earth, the waters, people, and the stories which are mixed together, and makes it possible to infer the academic trend, philosophy, and people's lives in Weijinnanbeichao(魏晉南北朝). I truly hope that more interesting and diverse researches to be done on this book in the near future.;酈道元의 『水經注』는 魏晉南北朝 시대의 地理 著作으로, 원문인 『水經』의 약 20배에 달하는 풍부한 내용들은 地理學뿐 아니라 文字學·方言學·歷史學·文獻學 등 여러 분야에서 주목을 받아왔으며, 문학적인 측면에서도 山水散文·民間詩歌·神話·傳說·小說 등 다방면으로부터의 접근이 요구되는 자료적 가치를 지니고 있다. 그러나 『水經注』에 대한 문학적인 접근은 아직은 초보단계에 머물러 있어 가히 未踏의 영역이라 할 만하다. 『水經注』는 특히 神話 資料의 寶庫로 알려져 있으나, 수록된 내용에 대한 기존의 고찰은 부분적인 인용에 그쳤을 뿐 본격적인 연구가 거의 없었다. 이러한 문제의식에 주목하여 本稿에서는 『水經注』에 수록된 神話 資料에 대해 정확한 파악을 先行한 후 기본적인 검토를 시도하였다. 本稿는 『水經注』에 대한 국내에서의 첫 연구인만큼 Ⅱ장에서는 『水經注』의 성립, 作者 문제 등 기초적인 사항을 검토하였다. 우선 『水經注』의 底本이 되는 『水經』과의 관계와 함께 판본의 상황을 간략하게 알아보았으며, 이어 『水經注』가 저술되었던 시대적 배경과 작자인 酈道元, 그리고 저술의 목적을 살펴보았다. 이에 따라 『水經注』는 당시 지리적 관심의 증대와 서적 편찬의 확대, 그리고 山水文學의 興起 등의 배경에 鼓舞되어 저술되었음을 알 수 있었다. Ⅲ장에서는 『水經注』의 體裁를 살펴보았는데, 注의 내용은 本文의 내용에만 穿鑿하던 종래의 注 양식을 타파하고 인용과 창작을 조화시켜 注文 그 자체만으로도 하나의 훌륭한 문장으로 완성되고 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 敍事體系의 측면에서 『水經注』의 서사는 地理博物體 類型이라 할 수 있으며 그 중에서도 지리박물체의 嚆矢인 『山海經』으로부터 매우 많은 영향을 받았음을 확인하였다. Ⅳ장에서는 『水經注』에 수록된 神話 資料 全般을 選別, 分類, 검토하였다. 먼저 선별된 신화 자료들을 創造神話·英雄神話·自然神話, 其他의 항목에 의해 해당 내용들을 분류하고 기본적인 검토를 施行하였다. 『水經注』에는 창조신화의 내용은 빈약한 편이며 영웅신화와 자연신화의 내용이 더 풍부하다. 영웅신화의 경우 저명한 영웅은 출생 및 계보와 행적 등에 대한 간단한 언급과 더불어 지리적 고찰이 함께 이루어져 보다 深化된 정보를 제시하고 있다. 또한 당시까지 비교적 알려지지 않은 영웅들, 예컨대 盤瓠·徐偃王·廩君 등에 대해서는 특별히 자세한 내용을 敷衍하고 있다. 자연신화는 天體神話·氣象神話·地理神話·動植物神話 등으로 나누어 살펴보았는데, 천체신화와 기상신화는 드물고 지리신화와 동식물신화가 풍부하였다. 지리신화에는 崑崙神話와 여러 水神과 山神 등에 대한 신화가 있고, 동식물신화로는 『山海經』에서 볼 수 있었던 기이한 동물과 그 효능에 대한 언급, 그리고 火浣布, 女鳥 등에 관한 신화 내용이 주목할 만하다. Ⅴ장은 『水經注』에 수록된 伏羲, 廩君, 그리고 河伯神話에 대한 Case Study로 이들 신화 내용에 대해 他 文獻과의 비교, 대조, 분석을 시도하였다. 伏羲의 경우 그의 출생 및 八卦 창조자로서의 모습이 수록되어 있는데, 이는 당시 문헌신화의 상황과 마찬가지로 아직 女媧와 배우자로의 결합이 이루어지지 않았음을 보여주고 있으며, 서사 내용에 있어서도 다소 變移가 일어났음을 알 수 있었다. 廩君의 경우는 『世本』의 내용을 더욱 발전시켜 그 이후의 내용까지 添增, 기록하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있는데 이러한 내용이 『晉書』와 『錄異記』에서 더욱 온전한 서사로 완성되고 있는 것으로 보아 후대 廩君 神話의 傳承에 『水經注』의 기록이 많은 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있었다. 河伯은 중국신화 속에서 惡神과 善神의 양면적인 형상을 지니고 있는데, 이로부터 파생된 다양한 모습들이 『水經注』내의 기록에서도 고루 나타나고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 『水經注』는 땅과 물 그리고 인간, 그것들이 얽혀서 만들어 내는 이야기를 흥미롭게 서술하고 있는 책이다. 특히 신화 자료를 통하여 고대 중국인의 원형적인 삶과 사유를 상상적인 차원에서 엿볼 수 있는 이 책에 대한 연구가 앞으로 더욱 심화되기를 소망하면서 本稿를 마치고자 한다.
