反事實文 分析을 통한 本質 槪念의 解釋

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 분석철학에서 논의되고있는 본질주의에 대한 이해를 심화시키고자, 본질에 관한 규정을 반사실문 분석을 통하여 새로이 제시하므로써 영미 분석철학의 맥락안에서의 본질 개념의 해석을 시도하여 본 연구이다. 이 연구가 의의를 가지게 되는 배경은 다음과 같다. 근대 경험주의에 의해 필연성 개념에 대한 인식론적 회의가 제기된 이후로, 사물의 필연적 성질인 본질 개념 또한 타당한 논의의 대상으로 받아들여지기 어려웠으므로, 고대 아리스토텔레스 철학이래로 의미있게 논의되어져 왔던 본질주의란, 분석철학의 영역에서는 다루기에 매우 곤란한 것으로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 1930년대 이후,영미 분석철학계에서는 필연성, 가능성과 같은 양상개념을 수용하는 양상논리를 수립하면서본질주의가 재론되어질 수 있었다. 하지만 양상개념을 거부하는 콰인에게 있어서는 본질이란,사물의 성질이 아니라 사물에 대한 우리의 말하는 방식일 뿐이어서 반본질주의적 견해는 여전히 유지되어진다. 그러나, 그러한 반본질주의적 분위기에도 불구하고 1950년대 후반이후 강력한 양상의미론을 전개하고 있는 크립키 체계에 있어서는, 고정지시어와 가능세계개념에 의하여 본질이라는 개념이 새롭게 규정되어 질 수 있으므로, 본질주의가 다시금 의미있게 주장되어져 현대 분석 철학에서의 본질 논의에 의의를 부여한다. 본 논문의 논의는 이러한 크립키 본질주의에서 출발한다. 그리고 거기에서 규정되는 본질 개념에 있어서 가능세계의 의미가 설명되어야 한다는 문제에 착안하였다. 그런데 이 과제를 해결하기위해서는 가능세계 존재론이 전재된 이론들은 적합하지 않다는 점과 그것은 반사실적으로이해되어야 한다는 점을 제안하였다. 그리하여 필자는 반사실문에 대한 분석 논의들을 살펴보았다. 반사실적 조건문에 대한 논의들 중에 가능세계개념에 중심하여 반사실문을 분석하고 있는 스탈나커와 루이스의 논의에서는 본 논문의 과제에의 만족점을 차지 못하였고, 반사실문에 관하여 하나의 이론을 구성하고 있는 크바르트의 논의에서 논문의 과제와의 적합성을 발견하였다. 그리하여 크바르트가 반사실문 분석을 통해 제시하는 자연-분지 유형 반사실문의 진리조건을보이었다. 그리고 난 후, 그것에 관한 이해의 구조를 얻어 본 주제에 접근하기 위하여, 양상개념에 대한 대물적(De Re)해석과 대언적(De Dicto)해석의 차이를 고려한 후에, 크바르트의 신도-과정 해석아래서의 대물적 반사실문과 대언적 반사실문의 구분을 설명하였고 그들중 대물적 반사실문이본 과제를 풀어가는데 적합하다는 것을 보이었다. 그리하여 필자는 크마르트가 분석한 반사실문구조를 통하여 크립키의 본질 개념 규정에 있어서의 '모든 가능한 세계에서…'를 의미있게 해석할 수 있는 본질 개념에 관한 새로운 규정을 제안하였다. 비록, 필자가 제안한 반사실문 분석을 통한 본질 개념의 해석이 완전하지는 못할지라도, 크립키 본질주의에 대한 이해를 넓혀주고 있으며, 또한, 이러한 논의는 분석철학의 체제안에서 양상의미론과 본질 주의를 의미있게 유지하고자 하는 하나의 시도였다는 점에서 의의를 가지게된다.;This thesis is an attempt to interpret essentialism within the context of analytic philosophy by persenting the stipulation of the concept "essence" through the analysis of counterfacturals. The background from which this thesis gains meaning is as follows: Since epistemological skepticism about the concept of necessity has been raised by empiricism, the concept of essence which is an essential property of things and makes essentialism meaningful since Aristotle, had been considered difficult to handle in the field of analytic philosophy. But since 1930's, when the schools of analytic philosophy started setting up modal logic which accommodates such modality as necessity, possibility, essentialism started to be reconstructed. But for Quine who reject modality, essence is not the property of things but the way we speak of things. Although anti-essentialism is still discussed, Essentialism is being newly advocated giving meaning to the discussion of essence in contemporary analytic philosophy, because the concept of essence can be newly stipulated by the concepts of "rigid designator" and "possible world" within the Kripke system which has been developing a strong 'Modal Semantics' since the late 1950's. This thesis starts from this Kripke's essentialism, and aims to clarify the meaning of "possible world" within the concept of essence which is specified in the Kripke's essentialism, And in order to solve this meaning problem, it is proposed that the possible World must be understood "counter-factual". Realistic and Actualistic theories which assume possible world ontology are so muddled that they are not appropriate to the problem. So this author examines the arguments of "counterfactuals". Among the arguments about counterfactual conditionals, the Kvart's argument which formulates a theory about counterfactuals was found to be appropriated to our main problem. Although Stalnaker and Lewis' arguments which analyzes counterfactuals focusing on the concept of possible world are well known, they did not satisfy the problems of this thesis. So the truth condition of natural-divergence type counterfactuals which wits presented by Kvart is shown. To approach the main subject, the difference between De Re and De Dicto Interpretations of modality is considered. The difference of De Re Counterfactuals and De Dicto Counterfactuals under Kvart's leading-process interpertation is explained and it is shown that De Re counterfactuals are approriate for solving this problem. Thus this author proposes a new stipulation about the concept "essence" through the counterfactuals structure analyzed by Kvart, able to meaningfully interpret "in all possible world..." in Kripke's stipulation about the concept of essence. Though "the interpretation about the concept of essence through the analysis of counterfactuals" proposeed by this author may not be complete, it will serve to broaden the understanding of the contemporary Essentialism constructed by Kripke. And the discussion in this thesis also makes an attempt to meaningfully maintain Modal Semantics and Essentialism within the field of analytical philosophy.
