패트릭 도일(Patrick Doyle)의 영화음악 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

영화에서 영화음악의 존재는 미학적, 기술적 부분과 더불어 경제적 측면에서도 광범위한 영향을 미치며, 영화음악은 그 자체로서 하나의 독립적인 문화 콘텐츠로 자리 잡게 되었다. 영화음악 산업의 발달과 더불어 대중들의 관심이 높아짐에 따라 영화음악 작곡가에 관한 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있지만, 그 연구는 몇몇 유명 작곡가에 편중돼 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 국내에서 본격적으로 연구되지 않은 작곡가 중, 최근 할리우드에서 주목받고 있는 영국 출신의 작곡가 패트릭 도일(Patrick Doyle, 1953~)을 선택하였다. 그가 음악감독으로 참여한 영화인 <헨리 5세(Henry V)>, <센스 앤 센서빌리티(Sense And Sensibility)>, <해리포터와 불의 잔(Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire)>의 주요 음악에 관한 분석을 통해 패트릭 도일의 음악적 특징을 연구하였다. 연구 방법으로서, 영화 음악사를 통해 현재 패트릭 도일의 음악사적 위치를 알아보고, 패트릭 도일의 생애, 활동 경력과 작품 경향을 통해 그의 음악적 배경을 살펴보았다. 본론에서는 오프닝 테마와 주인공 테마를 비롯한 주요 음악 분석을 통해 장면에서 의도하는 바가 음악적으로 어떻게 표현되고 있는지 살펴보고, 이러한 표현을 구성하는 음악적 요소들을 통하여 패트릭 도일의 음악적 어법에 대해 연구하였다. 작품 분석 결과 패트릭 도일은 음악적 색채감을 풍부하고 유려하게 그려내는 작곡가로서, 디지털 사운드에 의지하기보다는 관현악을 중심으로 한 서정적이고 풍부한 멜로디의 오케스트레이션을 펼쳐내며 클래식한 사운드와 현대음악의 기법을 조화롭게 사용하였다. 관현악법 연구를 통한 악기의 용법과 악기의 색채에 관한 연구를 통해 아이리쉬 휘슬이나, 백파이프의 음색을 만들어내고, 그것을 통해 이미지를 형상화하는데 주력했으며, 미니멀한 편곡을 통해 현대음악의 특징을 나타낸다. 연극 극단의 음악감독 출신답게 연극 음악의 특징을 가진 점들이 그의 독창성을 설명하는 스타일임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 패트릭 도일을 비롯하여 아직 연구되지 않은 많은 영화음악 작곡가들에 대한 연구가 체계적으로 이루어지기를 바라며, 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 작곡가들에 대한 다양한 연구를 통해 국내 영화음악의 발전을 위한 밑거름이 되길 바란다.;Music in the films has widely influenced on the movies in terms of aesthetic, technical, and even economical aspects. It seems obvious that film music has become an independent field of a cultural content now than ever. As the filed of film music dynamically grows in popular in Korean cultural society, many studies in terms of film music and the film music composers have been investigated. However, these studies are dominantly performed towards a couple of major composers. This circumstance may produce a biased viewpoint of film music, which will definitely hamper the diversity of art critique. For this reason, this dissertation attempts to cover the film music composers who has not yet fully discovered in Korea before. Here, Patrick Doyle, a British composer who has worked on films such as “Henry V”, “Sense and Sensibility” and “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire”as the music director was analyzed in terms of his musical characteristics in films described above. As an introductory part, historical backgrounds of Doyle's film music were focused in reflection with the history of film music, then considered where his philosophy in music is. In addition, his musical backgrounds were investigated by analyzing his lifetime, careers in film music, and style of his pieces. In the main part of this dissertation, it was analyzed how Doyle's music was expressed through each scene by looking into the pieces providing in the opening and the main actor/actress. Furthermore, other major parts of a film are musically analyzed to figure out how his musical factors affect on the scene. As a result, it was revealed that his music is colorful and exquisite. He knows how to dramatically maximize the orchestral sounds rather than depending on the artificial digital sounds. His music is filled with lyrical melodies by modulating classical orchestration skills and modern music techniques harmonically in his musical pieces. His orchestration created unique colors of sounds through Irish whistles or bagpipes, which was enabled by the analysis of instrumental usage and its each tone. In addition, he exploited the projection of clear images through the tone, which become a representative feature of modern music via minimal arrangements. As a music director in the play, he also incorporated theatrical style in his music works. Nonetheless this dissertation covered a whole structure of creations by Patrick Doyle, it is highly appreciated that much more studies should be followed systematically on various film music composers who have been less introduced in field of Korean film music.
