한국 사극영화에 나타난 한국음악의 특성과 의미

Abstract

Precedent studies about Korean traditional music in Korean historical movies have mostly been by people who studied movies and superficially dealt with Korean traditional music, rather focusing on movies. Besides, studies by music majors have had a limit of focusing on musical analysis. In this background, the author of this study, as a Korean traditional music major, noted that studies of Korean traditional music have been based only a few analyses of movie music and collection of materials, and therefore aims to directly review overall history of Korean movies and find out how Korean traditional music has been involved in Korean movies. This study reviewed how Korean traditional music has been used as movie music from the beginning. Noting that Korean traditional music was most frequently used particularly in Korean historical movies among various genres of Korean movies, this study was conducted by selecting representative Korean historical movies that show how Korean traditional music was used, and searching for the answers to since when and how Korean traditional music was used in those movies and what significance it has. For this purpose, about 100 years of history of Korean historical movies from the beginning of the 20th century to 2010 was reviewed, but as not all the movies in this period can be listed in this study, the movie music tracks in the movies were categorized by background music, theme music, sound effect music, and source music, and then their types of usage and significance were reviewed. As a results, the following were found: people of various occupations including western composers, recording technicians, etc. participated in those pieces of movie music; Korean traditional music was used, categorized into traditional music and creative music; traditional music was limitedly used for scenes of palace, shaman rituals, and courtesan houses; creative music was used for describing psychology of movie characters, and for background music. It was also found that the national policy of Korean traditional music and its incorporation into college education uniformly established its tunes and beats, and Korean music used in movies went beyond the scope of an independent art and changed into diverse forms through interactions with the society.;현재까지 진행된 영화 속 한국음악에 관한 연구는 영화를 연구하는 사람들에 의한 영화사 중심의 피상적 언급만이 이루어졌다. 또한 음악 전공자들의 연구도 대부분 악곡분석에 치중하고 있는 한계점을 가지고 있었다. 이러한 배경에서 연구자는 한국음악전공자로서, 영화 속에 나타나는 한국음악 연구가 소수의 영화 음악분석과 자료수집만으로 이루어진다는 점에 주목하여 한국영화사 전반을 직접 살펴보고 한국영화 속 한국음악이 어떠한 방식으로 수용되고 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 본 논문은 한국음악이 영화음악으로 사용된 이래 어떠한 모습으로 진행되고 있는지 살펴보았다. 한국영화 장르 중에서도 사극영화 속 한국음악의 사용이 두드러진다는 점에 착안하여 한국음악의 사용형태를 살펴볼 수 있는 대표적인 사극영화들을 선정, 사극영화 속에서 한국음악이 언제부터, 어떠한 방식으로 사용되며, 어떤 의미를 가지고 있는가, 라는 의문에서 진행되었다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 20세기 초부터 2010년까지 약 100년간을 살펴보며, 이 시기의 영화를 모두 열거할 수 없기 때문에 시대별로 대표할 수 있는 영화 속의 영화음악을 배경음악, 주제음악, 효과음악, 소스음악으로 나누어 시기별 영화음악의 사용형태와 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 영화음악은 서양음악작곡자, 녹음기술자 등 다양한 직업의 사람들이 참여했으며, 한국음악의 장르는 전통음악과 창작음악으로 구분되어 사용되었고 전통음악은 궁중, 굿, 기방의 일부장면에서만 사용되며 창작음악은 극중 인물의 심리묘사와 영화의 배경음악으로 사용되는 형태를 보여주었다. 국가정책과 한국음악의 대학교육으로 편입은 한국음악의 음정과 박자를 일률적으로 정립시켰으며, 영화에 사용된 한국음악은 단독적인 예술의 영역을 넘어 사회와의 상호작용을 통한 다양한 형태로 변화되었음을 알 수 있었다.
