개화기 이후 시대적 변화에 따른 권번춤 활동에 의한 무용사적 의의

Abstract

본 연구는 한국 춤이 역사 속에서 어떠한 발전과정을 거치면서 오늘날에 이르게 되었는지에 대한 해답을 찾고자 하는 데서 출발하였다. 특히 조선시대의 궁중춤이 시대적 변화를 거치며 어떻게 현재 공연문화에 이르게 되었는지를 연구하고자 하였으며, 이를 위해 ‘권번춤’ 활동에 중점을 두었다. 조선시대 말 관기제도의 폐지와 함께 일반관객을 대상으로 공연을 하게 된 관기들은 일제강점기로 들어선 후 ‘권번’이라는 집단의 소속이 되어 활동을 이어가게 된다. 이시기 유입된 서구식 극장무대에서의 공연을 통해 오늘날 추어지고 있는 전통춤 대부분의 원형이 권번을 매개로 정립되었고, 이 당시 춤 활동에서는 궁중춤의 재구성과 더불어 관객의 흥미를 고려한 창작춤이 새롭게 선보였다. 이와 같이 일제강점기의 권번은 오늘날 우리 춤이 형성됨에 있어 한 축을 담당 하였다. 그러나 권번의 시대적 배경은 조선의 몰락과 일제강점기로 이어지는 격변의 시대였으므로, 권번춤에 관한 연구는 전 시대와의 연결선상에서 이해되어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 조선말인 개화기 이후의 시대적 변화에 따른 권번춤 활동을 근거로 하여 이에 따른 무용사적 의의를 찾는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 개화기의 시대적 배경, 개화기 이전 기생 소속집단의 역사와 기생의 춤 활동양상을 중심으로 이론적 배경을 살펴 본 후, 개화기 이후 시대적 변화에 따른 춤 활동을 분석하였고, 이를 위해 기생의 소속집단을 기준으로 장악원, 기생조합, 권번으로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 이러한 연구를 통해 권번춤이 갖는 무용사적 의의를 크게 세 가지로 정리할 수 있었다. 첫째, 권번춤은 조선여악의 해체와 함께 사라질 위기에 놓인 궁중춤이 민간으로 유입되면서 현재까지 존속 될 수 있도록 해주는 계기가 되었다. 둘째, 무대형식이 극장식 무대로 바뀌면서 오늘날의 전통춤이 이 시기를 통해 재정립되었다. 셋째, 일반관객을 위한 무대로의 변화 속에서 궁중무에 민속적 아이디어가 도입 된 창작춤이 발생하였다. 이와 같이 개화기 이후의 권번춤은 서구화와 더불어 한국 전통춤과 서구의 예술양식이 접목됨으로써 나타난 예술적 형식을 갖춘 춤의 시작을 의미한다. 따라서 이 시기 춤에 대한 규명은 무용사적으로 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있겠다. 이로써 본 연구는 크게 창작춤과 전통춤으로 분류되는 현재 한국춤에서 권번이 지닌 가치를 밝히고, 나아가 권번춤이 오늘날 한국춤의 바탕이 됨을 인식하고 이를 통해 한국춤이 지속적으로 발전할 수 있도록 해주는 자양분 역할로서 이바지할 수 있기를 기대한다.;This study aimed at an answer to a question 'What kinds of process or development dance has gotten through to become a recent dancing culture'. I focused on 'Kwonbun dance' to study what and how the historical events had affected Jo-sun Dynasty's dance. Late Jo-sun dynasty, when official discipline system was over, Kwanki finally were allowed to dance in front of ordinary people and they belonged to the group called Kwonbun as the Japan got to govern Korea. Recent Korean dance is a legacy of Kwonbun and during this period, people reorganized former dance and created different style focusing on audience's interests. The purpose of this study is to understand Kwonbun's historical meaning based on its activity after the time of enlightenment. This study looked through the history of Gisengs and their activity in a theoretical basis before the enlightenment period, and analyzed their performance after the period. We categorized the Giseng's group as Jang-ak won, Gisaeng union, and Kwonbeon to see about how Korean dance has been changed by the time clearly. In this way, I was able to find three important values of Kwonbun-dance in the dance history. First, Kwonbun-dance made Korean dance succeed until now which could have been disconnected with the breakup of Josun-Yeoak. Second, our unique traditional dance could be developed by providing stage like "theater" for the dance. Third and lastly, in the process of expanding the audience groups from royal family to ordinary persons, it created different style of Korean dance by adding humane idea to the ordinary audiences. Hence, Kwonbun-dance after the enlightenment period means the start of new artistic style, the combination of traditional Korean dance and Western style of art. By lighting on how Kwonbun affected the development of creative and traditional dance, two main theme of Korean dance, I expect understanding Kwonbun as the foundation of Korean dance to contribute to Korean dance's continuous development.
