구스타프 말러의 오케스트라 가곡 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 독일의 후기 낭만음악을 대표하는 구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911)의 오케스트라 가곡 중「뤼케르트 시에 의한 5개의 가곡 Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」을 분석 연구한 것이다. 오스트리아 출신의 유태인 음악가인 구스타프 말러는 19세기 후반에서 20세기 초에 독일의 후기 낭만음악의 절정을 이룬 작곡가이자 지휘자였다. 그는 바그너(Richard Wagner, 1813-1883)의 혁신적이고 장대한 스케일을 가진 음악 스타일에 영향을 받아 극적인 동시에 폭넓은 표현력을 자신의 음악에서 이끌어 냈다. 말러는 특히 가곡의 영역에서 기존에 전형적으로 이뤄지던 피아노 반주에서 벗어나 혁신적이고 장대한 오케스트라 반주에 의한 가곡인 ‘오케스트라 가곡’을 새로이 만들어냄으로써 리트장르의 새로운 시대를 창조함과 동시에 더 나아가 근대음악의 탄생에 중요한 역할을 했다고 평가된다. 말러의 오케스트라 가곡은 피아노 반주만으로는 표현하지 못했던 다양하고 화려한 음색과 확장된 규모를 가지는 말러의 특징적인 스타일이었다. 말러는 오케스트라 가곡이라는 새로운 형태의 가곡을 통해서 슈베르트(Franz Peter Schubert, 1797-1828), 슈만(Robert Alexander Schumann, 1810-1856), 브람스(Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897)로 계보를 이어 왔던 19세기의 전통적인 성악과 피아노 반주의 가곡 형태를 새로운 스타일로 발전시키면서, 쇤베르크(Arnold Schönberg, 1874-1935), 베르크(Alban Berg, 1885-1935), 베베른(Anton Webern, 1883-1945)등의 후대 작곡가들에게 영향을 끼쳤다고 평가된다. 본 논문에서는 말러의 특징적인 오케스트라 가곡을「뤼케르트 시에 의한 5개의 가곡 Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」을 중심으로 연구하였다. 첫 번째 부분에서는 말러의 음악가로서의 삶과 그의 오케스트라 가곡이 탄생한 배경과 일반적 특징, 그리고 그의 전체 오케스트라 가곡 작품들에 대해 고찰해보았다. 그리고 두 번째 부분에서는 본격적으로「뤼케르트 시에 의한 5개의 가곡」의 작품개요와 시인을 소개하고, 5곡의 가곡의 분석을 통해 말러의 오케스트라 가곡의 특징을 연구하였다. 말러의 오케스트라 가곡 분석을 통해 필자는 말러가 사용한 오케스트라 악기의 다양한 음색과 화려하고 폭넓은 음향을 바탕으로 그가 가사의 내용을 더욱 명확하고 섬세하게 표현할 수 있었고, 시의 분위기도 잘 살릴 수 있었다는 점을 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 더불어 세부적 화성분석을 통해 비화성음과 반음계적 진행의 사용, 잦은 변박과 갑작스러운 전조 등을 발견하여 말러의 후기 낭만적인 작곡의 특징을 정리할 수 있었다. 말러의 오케스트라 가곡은 리트의 역사를 새롭게 쓴 독창적이고 위대한 작품으로 평가된다는 점에서 필자의 곡 분석은 오케스트라 가곡의 독창적인 면을 밝히고, 오케스트라 반주가 시와 더불어 어떻게 표현되었는지를 살필 수 있다는 점에서 큰 의의를 가진다. 또한 본 논문이 오늘날 연주자들이 그 가치를 높이고 이해하는데 큰 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라 말러의 다른 작품들에 비해 덜 알려진「뤼케르트 시에 의한 5개의 가곡」작품에 대해 관심을 가지고 연주하는 데에도 도움이 되었으면 한다.;This paper is about the analysis of Gustav Mahler's orchestral songs「Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」. Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) is a German musician representing the Post Romanticism. Gustav Mahler, a Jewish musician who was born in Austria, was a composer and conductor whose music was at the height of the German Post Romanticism from the latter half of the 19th century to the early 20th century. Influenced by the innovative and spectacular-scale musical style of Richard Wagner (1813-1883), the Jewish composer induced dramatic and broad expression from his music. In the field of lieder especially, he is said to take an important role for creation of a new era of lied genre and furthermore for the birth of modern music by breaking away from traditional piano accompaniment and composing〝Orchestral Songs〞by innovative and spectacular orchestra accompaniment, Mahler's orchestra lieder showed his distinctive style with diverse and impressive tones which piano accompaniment couldn't express and expanded scales. Through the new type of lieder, or orchestral songs, Mahler developed the traditional vocal music and lieder with piano accompaniment of the 19th century whose tradition was continued by Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828), Robert Alexander Schumann (1810-1856) and Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) into a new style. Mahler is evaluated to influence later-generation composers, such as Arnold Schönberg (1874-1935), Alban Berg (1885-1935) and Anton Webern (1883-1945). This paper was focused on 「Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」 out of Mahler's characteristic orchestral songs. At the first part of the paper, I studied his life as a musician, the background of his orchestral songs and their general characteristics and his entire orchestra lieder. At the second part, I mentioned the summary of「Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」 and the poet and studied characteristics of his orchestral songs through analysing five lieder. Through analyses of Mahler's orchestral songs, I discovered that he could more clearly and delicately express contents of the words and could change the mood of poems based on various tones and impressive and broad sound of musical instruments which he used. In addition, I could arrange characteristics of his Post Romantic composition through use of non-harmonic tones and chromatic progression, frequent odd meters and sudden modulation through detailed analyses of harmony. In the respect that Mahler's orchestral songs are thought to be original and great works which wrote a new history of lieder, my analyses of music are meaningful because I could find creative aspects of orchestral songs and look into how orchestra accompaniment and poems were expressed. I hope that this paper will help today's musicians enhance values of orchestral songs and understand them. I also expect that this paper will help those musicians be interested in and play 「Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von Rückert」, a song which is less famous than other songs composed by Mahler.
