Franz Anton Hoffmeister Viola Concerto in D Major의 연구 및 분석

Abstract

오늘날 Viola Concerto 레퍼토리 중 고전주의 시대의 매우 중요한 작품으로 자리매김하고 있는 Franz Anton Hoffmeister(1754~1812)의 Viola Concerto in D Major 는 Carl Stamitz(1745~1804)의 Viola Concerto in D Major와 더불어 현재 그 위치를 명백히 보여주고 있다. 그러나 국내에선 그 중요성에 비해 작곡가와 곡에 대한 정보가 풍부하지 않은 것이 사실이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 F.A.Hoffmeister의 삶과 음악, 그리고 Viola Concerto의 전반적인 이해를 바탕으로, 그의 Viola Concerto in D Major를 분석하고자 한다. 1740년 이전의 Viola 레퍼토리는 다른 악기를 위한 작품을 편곡한 것들이 대부분이었으나, 18세기 중반에 이르러 작곡가들은 Viola를 독주 악기로써 다루기 시작했다. 1740년에서 1840년까지의 기간 동안 많은 작곡가들에 의해 140개가 넘는 Viola Concerto가 작곡되었으며, 낭만주의 시대에 이르러 Violist들은 Violinist와 견줄 만큼 기술적 능력의 발전을 이루었다. 1870년 이후, Viola Concerto는 새로운 단계로 도약하게 된다. 악곡 분석에 앞서, Viola Concerto의 이해를 돕기 위해 당대 Viola에 대한 인식과 더불어 Viola Concerto의 역사에 관하여 먼저 살펴보도록 한다. 다음으로는 독일의 작곡가이자 음악 출판업자로 더욱 잘 알려진 Hoffmeister의 삶과 음악을 제시함으로써 그의 음악적 특징과 사상을 작품 해석에 반영한다. 이 작품은 3악장 구성으로 제 1악장(Allegro)은 Concerto-sonata 형식을 따르고 있으며, 4개의 ritornello와 3개의 solo로 이루어져 있다. 제 2악장(Adagio)은 고전주의 Concerto의 2악장에 쓰이는 전형적 형식 중 하나인 순환 2부 형식으로 구성되어 있다. 제 3악장(Allegretto)은 당시 일반적이었던 고전주의 시대의 rondo 형식을 가지고 있다. Hoffmeister의 연주관습들은 고전주의 시대 Vienna 악파의 전형적인 음악 양식을 보여준다. 악곡 분석 후 그의 연주관습들을 알아보고 동시에 3종류의 주요 Cadenza를 비교 분석하여 곡의 세부적인 사항들을 연구하도록 한다. 본 연구의 주된 목적은 Franz Anton Hoffmeister 의 Viola Concerto in D Major 에 대한 전반적인 이해와 곡의 구체적 분석으로 연주자들의 곡 해석과 실제 연주에 도움을 주고자하는데 있다.;Franz Anton Hoffmeister was a church music master, a music publisher, a viola player, a composer and a conductor. Though he is mainly known as a music publisher nowadays, Hoffmeister was the very popular and prolific composer during the Classical period. In his thirty years of career as a composer, his works includes operas, symphonies, church works, quartets, concertos, chamber works and more. Moreover, his music was very popular in foreign cities as well as in Vienna since he used several classical music styles at that time in Europe, such as the concise melody and the balanced formal structure. Hoffmeister’s viola concerto in D Major was built on the standard features and styles for the concerto genre of Classical Vienna. In the Classical period, the first movement is usually in sonata form, though the sonata form is slightly different in the concerto genre. It is called the Concerto-sonata form and it is the mixture of the sonata form and ritornello from the Baroque period. The 1st movement has a typical formal structure of the time and an adagio, the 2nd movement is structured as the rounded binary form. The 3rd movement is in Rondo form that was the common choice for the 3rd movement of a concerto during the Classical period. The beginning of the movement directly presents the Principle theme of a standard 4+4 periodic phrase with a light character. Various ways of playing ornaments and dynamics are characteristic in this period. They can be particularly challenging since the details of playing them are usually not marked on score, but they rather depend on a performer’s understanding and knowledge of performance at that time. The cadenzas were generally improvised in the eighteenth century. However there are several cadenzas available in print at present and all these cadenzas has varying levels of difficulty. Some of them are full of double-stops, which make performers to pay endless time for the accurate intonation of left hand and some are focusing on the rhythmic pattern which requires strong right-hand techniques. So that, for the performer, it is one of the most significant moments to show their virtuosity. With the aid of Leopold Mozart’s “A Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing”, this document, analysis of Hoffmeister’s viola concerto in D Major, provides a performance guide that I hope would enhance violists’ understanding of performing eighteenth-century viola concertos.
