Abstract
A. 자세 1. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of breath length and surface type on posture, postural muscle activity, and postural stability in yoga. Subjects were 15 certified female yoga instructors in their twenties with at least five years of teaching experience. Independent variables were breath length (normal breathing, or abdominal deep-breathing/5 second inhalation/20 second pause/10 second exhalation) and surface type (floor, 6cm highly elastic latex foam pad, 7cm aerostep pad). Dependent variables were posture (sagittal and coronal plane), postural muscle activity, and postural stability. Posture in the sagittal plane was evaluated by comparing a vertical line from the floor to a straight line passing through subject’s ankle to their earlobe. In addition, deviation from vertical was compared specifically at the wrist, elbow, shoulder, and earlobe. In the coronal plane a straight line was inscribed connecting the right and the left: earlobes, shoulders, scapulae, elbows, and wrists. This line was compared to a horizontal line located at the center of the body. On both sides, the distance from center and the angle of deviation from horizontal were measured. Postural muscle activity was gauged via electromyogram at the trapezius, latimus dorsi, external obliques and the rectus abdominus muscles. Postural stability was evaluated via center of pressure. A force platform was used to analyze center of pressure, including integral and range for the center of pressure both in the x and y directions. Window SPS 18.0 package was used for statistical analysis. 2 by 3 MANOVA was used for statistical comparison of posture, postural muscle activation, and postural stability for both breathing types and the three different surface types. The probability value for this study was below 0.05 and Scheffe was used for post-hoc analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. A. Posture 1. Sagittal Plane 2 by 3 MANOVA analysis revealed that there were significantly smaller differences in the distance of deviation at the wrist (aerostep; F=7.844, p<0.01), and elbow (aerostep; F=4.967, p<0.01) on the aerostep while using the deep-breathing technique. In addition, ANOVA analysis verified the specific elements of breathing and surface that created these significant differences. Firstly, deep breathing resulted in the shortest distance of deviation at subject’s wrist and elbow on all surfaces. Furthermore, this analysis confirmed that regardless of breathing technique, the aerostep created the shortest distance of deviation at the wrist and elbow compared to other surfaces. 2. Coronal Plane The angle and distance of deviation was significantly smaller in the coronal plane at the scapula (F=6.921, p<0.01) and wrist (F=8.681, p<0.01) on the aerostep while using deep breathing. In addition, ANOVA analysis verified the specific elements of breathing and surface that resulted in these significant differences. Deep breathing created the smallest angle of deviation and shortest distance of deviation at the scapula and wrist, regardless of the surface type. In addition, the aerostep created the shortest angle and distance of deviation of the scapula and wrist regardless of breathing technique. B. Postural Muscle Activation 1. MANOVA analysis revealed significantly higher levels of muscle activation in all muscle groups (trapezius, latimus dorsi, external obliques and the rectus abdominus muscles) for deep breathing(trapezius;F=18.062, p<.001, latimus dorsi;F=46.516, p<.001, external obliques;F=12.661, p<.001, rectus abdominus;F=10.390, p<.01) on the aerostep(trapezius;F=10.224, p<.001, latimus dorsi;F=17.140, p<.001, external obliques;F=10.767, p<.001, rectus abdominus;F=3.214, p<.05). 2. ANOVA analysis demonstrated statistically higher levels of muscle activation during deep breathing for all muscles on both the aerostep and highly elastic latex foam pad. 3. In addition, during deep breathing there were statistically higher levels of muscle activation on the floor for the trapezius and latimus dorsi. 4. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the obliques and rectus abdominal muscles on the floor according to breathing technique. 5. In addition, there was no statistically significant difference in the rectus abdominal muscles during the normal breathing according to surface type. C. Postural Stability There was a significantly larger integral for the center of pressure in the x (lateral) and y (posterior) directions for deep breathing(x;F=3.095, p<.05, y;F=6.078, p<.05) on the aerostep(x;F=5.875, p<.01, y;F=5.713, p<.01). Likewise, the range for the center of pressure in the lateral and posterior directions was significantly larger for deep breathing(x;F=4.391, p<.05, y;F=5.444, p<.01) on the aerostep(x;F=6.586, p<.01, y;F=14.026, p<.001). Yoga places a great emphasis on deep breathing techniques in conjunction with various movements and postures. Two research questions guided this study. 1) What are the benefits of deep breathing? 2) What are the characteristics of the optimal surface for yoga deep breathing exercises? Compared to normal breathing, deep breathing resulted in better posture, postural muscle activation, and postural stability regardless of the surface type. These benefits are multiplied on an aerostep because of the multi-directional resistance it provides. As an unstable platform, the aerostep creates a larger COP which results in both greater muscle activation and a larger base of support to maintain and correct posture. Combined with deep breathing, the aerostep results in greater activation of postural muscles (trapezius, and latimus dorsi in the back, external obliques and the rectus abdominus in the core). Specifically, on the aerostep, the pause phase of deep breathing demonstrated the highest levels of activation for all muscle groups. Thus, the pause phase should be emphasized during breathing exercises to increase stability. This concept can be expanded to other exercises which require stability. For example, weight lifters commonly hold their breath for stability while rising during a weighted squat. For the rectus abdominus muscles, normal breathing on all surfaces resulted in lower muscles activation. Similarly on the floor, low muscle activation occurred regardless of breathing technique. Thus in order to optimize rectus abdominus muscle activation, yoga practioners should avoid both using the floor or normal breathing techniques. Ultimately, deep breathing and the use of the aerostep activates more postural muscles to improve posture and increase postural stability.
