풍자화를 활용한 효율적인 역사수업 모색

Abstract

학생들은 문자 서술 중심의 자료를 어려워하거나 재미를 느끼지 못하는 경우가 많다. 이에 반해, 비문자 자료는 역사적 사실을 생생하게 보여줄 수 있으며, 문자 자료보다 친근감을 느끼고 흥미를 가질 수 있다. 본 연구는 ‘역사적 사실을 생생하게 보여줄 수 있는 자료는 어떠한 것이 있을까?’에 대한 의문에서 출발하였다. 풍자화는 과거의 일에 생생하게 다가갈 수 있고 풍자화 안에 숨겨진 의미를 다양하게 탐구할 수 있다는 점에서 역사교육 현장에서 보충 자료로서 활용할 수 있다. 그러나 풍자화는 글 이상의 정보가 숨겨져 있기 때문에 학생들의 역사 이해 수준에 적절하며 역사적 사고력을 배양할 수 있는 자료를 선별할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 풍자화에 주목하여 이를 효율적인 역사교육에 활용하도록 체계화하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구의 분석 대상은 러일전쟁으로 선정하였다. 러일전쟁은 여러 나라가 얽혀있어 당시 매체에서 많은 자료가 배출되었기 때문이다. 이를 구현할 방법으로 풍자화에 대한 이론적 검토 및 러일전쟁에 대한 현행 교과서의 서술내용과 풍자화를 검토하였다. 그리고 러일전쟁에 대한 최근 연구 성과를 바탕으로 관련 문헌 속의 풍자화를 역사 교육적으로 어떠한 맥락에서 적용할 수 있을지 분석하였다. 이러한 분석에 더하여 본 연구는 풍자화를 활용한 효율적인 역사수업을 모색하였다. 연구자가 제작한 학습 활동지의 질문을 통해 학생들은 풍자화의 의미 및 역사적 맥락을 파악할 수 있다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 풍자화는 역사사실 이해도 측면에서 러일전쟁이 러시아와 일본, 그리고 열강이 개입된 복잡한 사건이라는 것을 잘 나타내고 있다. 둘째, 풍자화는 역사교육 효율성 측면에서 숨겨진 의미에 대한 능동적인 해석을 통해 역사적 사고력을 높일 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 풍자화를 활용한 효율적인 역사 교육을 위한 단서를 마련하였다. 본 연구는 이해하기 어려운 내용을 풍자화를 통해 쉽게 설명할 수 있는 보충 자료로 이용될 수 있도록 제안하여 향후 교과서에 새로운 자료를 제작하거나 역사 교사가 학습 자료로 이용하는데 미력하나마 기여하고자 한다.;Most students have difficulty or don't find interest in material that mostly consist of words and description. On the other hand, material not based on writing can show historical fact vividly and students find this more informal and interesting. This research began with the question: What kind of material will present historical fact vividly? Through satirical illustrations one can approach past events graphically, and because there are many different ways to explore hidden meanings in the illustrations, they can be applied as supplement material in on-the-field history education. However, selection of material is necessary to nurture students' historical thinking. Satirical illustrations are apt for students' level of historical understanding and there is much more information hidden inside them than in written material. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to give attention to satirical illustrations and how they may be systematically organized to use them in historical education efficiently. Selected for the subject of analysis of this research was the Russo-Japanese War. The reason for this is because many countries were involved in the Russo-Japanese War and therefore much material was produced from the media at that time. In order to realize this, theoretical examination into satirical illustrations and examination into currently used textbooks for Russo-Japanese War description and satirical drawings was conducted. Also, analysis was conducted based on recent research results on the Russo-Japanese War concerning what context the satirical illustrations in related documents could be applied in history education. In addition to this analysis, this research sought to find ways to give an effective history lesson using satirical illustrations. With questions in the learning activity sheets created by the researcher, students were able to comprehend the meanings of the satirical illustrations and their historical context. Research results are as follows. First, satirical illustrations well represent on a level of understanding historical fact that the Russo-Japanese War was a complex happening that involved Russia, Japan, and the Great Powers. Second, satirical illustrations, on the aspect of history education effectiveness, can raise power of historical thinking through active interpretation on hidden meanings. A first step in efficient historical education using satirical illustrations was accomplished through this research. The researcher proposes that this research be used as supplementary material in using satirical illustrations to explain difficult subjects more easily, and hopes to contribute, though little that it may be, when producing new textbook material, or for it to be used as study material for history teachers.
