쟌 카를로 메노티(Gian Carlo Menotti, 1911-2007)의 오페라 「전화(The Telephone, 1946)」 에 나타난 사실주의의 영향 연구 분석

Abstract

본 논문은 쟌 카를로 메노티(Gian Carlo Menotti, 1911-2007)의 희극 오페라 「전화(The Telephone, 1946)」에 나타난 사실주의의 영향을 연구분석한 논문이다. 메노티는 이탈리아의 사실주의적인 음악관에 영향을 받은 작곡가로 사회참여적인 시각을 가지고 당시의 주된 관심사를 담은 오페라를 작곡함으로서 세계적으로 인정을 받았다. 본 논문에서는 작품을 분석하기에 앞서 그의 작곡양식에 영향을 끼친 사실주의에 관해 언급하고 이에 영향을 받은 오페라를 살펴봄으로써 「전화」에 나타난 사실주의의 영향을 이해하는 데 도움이 되고자 하였다. 20세기 미국에서 활발한 작곡활동을 벌였던 메노티는 전 생애에 걸쳐 25편의 오페라를 작곡하여 미국 오페라 발전에 크게 공헌하였다. 특히 1940년대에서 1950년대 초반에 걸쳐 작곡된 오페라 「영매」, 「전화」, 「영사」와 같은 작품들은 사실주의적인 영향을 나타내며, 정치적, 사회적으로 조건 지어진 현실세계로 인한 개인의 갈등을 생생하게 반영함으로써 높은 평가를 받았다. 본 논문에서는 메노티의 사실주의적인 음악양식을 잘 나타내는 작품들 중 한 작품인 「전화」를 분석하여 작품에 나타나는 사실주의의 영향을 살펴보았다. 작품을 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 메노티는 전화기로 인해 벌어지는 일상적인 사건을 오페라의 소재로 다루었으며, 전화기를 통해 발생되는 다양한 소리들을 객관적인 관찰에 의거하여 사실적으로 표현함으로써 현실의 상황을 있는 그대로 재현해 내었다. 또한 극에 현실성을 부여하기 위해 일상적이고 직설적인 대화체를 가사로 사용하였으며, 오케스트라의 음향의 대비, 조성과 박자의 변화, 리듬의 분할, 불협화음과 변화화음, 증음정과 감음정, 성부 간에 나타나는 대립적인 구조를 통하여 극중 상황과 인물의 내면을 보다 사실적으로 묘사해 내었다. 작품 안에서 전화기는 사건을 발생시켜 극을 전개해 나가는 중심적인 역할을 담당하였으며 인간의 대화에 단절을 초래하는 방해자로 묘사되었다.;This study examines and analyzes the impact of the realism which is found in The Telephone(1946) by Gian Carlo Menotti. Menotti, a composer who was greatly influenced by the realism, has a worldwide renown for composing the operas that focus on the major issues of the times. In this study, a further analysis on The Telephone is preceded by the examination on the realism and other realist operas so as to help understanding the impact of realism in The Telephone. Menotti, a 20th century composer, made huge contributions to the development of the opera in the US by composing 25 operas throughout his lifetime. Particularly, the operas which are composed from the 1940s to the early 1950s are recognized for reflecting the personal conflicts occurred from the political and social conditions in reality. The study examines the impact of the realism by analyzing The Telephone, a representative of Menotti's music style. The result of the analysis is as following. In The Telephone, Menotti deals with the happening surrounding the telephone. He recreates the reality as if it is real by describing various sounds realistically based on the objective observation. He adds the reality by using the usual and direct dialogic style. In additions, he describes the scene and characters' mind realistically through contrasting sounds of the orchestra, changes in tempo and rhythm, divisions of rhythm, discords and altered chords, augmented and diminished intervals, and a confrontational structure among vocal parts. In the opera, the telephone plays a central role, generating the events and unfolding the story, while described as an obstructor which breaks off the conversation among the people.
