포털사이트 메인페이지의 기호학적 연구

Abstract

웹사이트는 네트워크로 연결된 월드와이드웹을 구성하는 요소로, 하나의 통일된 정체성을 지닌 공간이다. 웹사이트를 이루는 웹페이지는 문자, 이미지, 영상 등의 복합적 기호들이 혼재하는 기호학적 텍스트이다. 특히 메인페이지는 해당 사이트가 사용자에게 전달하고자 하는 심층가치를 요약적이고 함축적으로 담고 있다. 사용자 인터페이스는 구조화된 가치를 가시적으로 표현하고, 또 사용자에게 전달하는데 있어 핵심적 역할을 담당한다. 때문에 본 연구는 사용자 인터페이스에 대한 기존의 연구들, 즉 기술적, 미학적 측면에서 사용성을 향상시키기 위한 관점에서 벗어나 사용자 인터페이스를 분석의 시작점으로 삼고 웹사이트의 의미생성행로와 변화 양상을 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위하여 본 논문에서는 기호학적 분석방법론을 활용하고자 한다. 포털사이트는 국내 인터넷 사용자의 98%이상이 적극적으로 활용하고 있는 만큼 상당한 영향력을 가지고 있다. 이러한 포털사이트의 의미생성층위를 구분하면 심층층위, 표층층위, 표면층위의 세 가지 층위로 나눌 수 있다. 먼저 심층층위에서는 기획자들에 의해 포털사이트가 표방하며 전달하고자 하는 핵심 가치가 설정된다. 두 번째로 표층층위에서는 가치들의 중요도가 정해지고 구조화된다. 마지막으로 표면층위에서는 구조화된 가치들이 비로소 사용자가 직접 체험할 수 있는 수준으로 가시화된다. 사용자는 기획자의 의미생성과정 순서와는 반대로 먼저 표면의 사용자 인터페이스를 통해 사이트의 구조를 이해하고 최종적으로 기획자가 설정하였던 심층의 메시지를 전달받게 된다. 이러한 의미생성층위를 바탕으로 실제 포털사이트에서 의미생성행로가 진행되는 양상을 살펴보면, 포털사이트의 심층층위에는 검색사이트와 대립되는 자질들이 존재함을 알 수 있다. 이러한 기본적 자질들을 바탕으로 포털사이트들은 각기 차별화된 심층가치들을 설정한다. 이러한 가치들의 비중이 표층층위에서 결정되면, 각 가치들을 표면화하고 있는 서비스들은 그 비중에 따라 메인페이지에서의 주목도가 결정된다. 이때 사용자 인터페이스는 기획자가 설정한 가치와 메시지를 전달하는 조력자 역할을 담당한다. 또한 포털사이트는 메인페이지에 모듈화된 정보를 다중적으로 게시함으로서 사용자의 반응과 참여를 이끌어낸다. 사용자는 이러한 포털사이트의 메시지를 긍정적으로 수신하여 사용자 주도의 의미해석을 시작한다. 포털사이트는 고정적이지 않으며 3단계 과정의 순환에 의해 확장될 수 있다. 1단계에서 기획자 주도로 포털사이트의 서비스 구조와 이용 규칙들이 확정되고 나면, 2단계에서 1차 구조의 수용자들인 파워 유저와 전문 콘텐츠 제공자들에 의해 내용이 생성된다. 마지막 단계에서 포털에 방문하는 일반적 사용자들은 클릭과 입출력을 통해 지속적으로 의견을 표출한다. 기획자는 사용자 및 사회문화적 피드백을 적극적으로 수용하고 사이트가 표방하는 심층가치를 재차 검토하여 가치의 중요도를 재설정하거나 새로운 가치를 추가하게 된다. 이러한 심층가치의 변화는 가치의 재구조화와 새로운 사용자 인터페이스의 가시화로 연결된다. 이러한 과정이 반복되면서 포털사이트는 계속해서 메인페이지의 사용자 인터페이스를 새롭게 개편하여 해당 사이트가 추구하는 심층 가치에 변화가 일어났음을 시각적으로 보여주게 된다. 이와 같은 논의는 포털사이트가 인터넷 생태계의 흐름을 압축적으로 표출하고 있는 문화 인터페이스라는 점에서 유의미한 분석이라 할 수 있다. 때문에 앞으로도 사용자 인터페이스에 대한 인문학적 관점을 바탕으로 계속해서 변화하고 있는 포털사이트에 대한 지속적 연구가 필요할 것이다.;A web site is a component of WWW(World Wide Web) which are connected with networks and a virtual space which has a united identity. Web pages are the semiotic text that include letters, images, and movies. Especially the main page of a portal site shows values briefly and compressively on profound level . User interface of a web site appears structualized values visibly, and transmits the values to users of the web site. Therefore this study starts on user interface to understand ‘parcours generatif de la signification' and patterns of expansion of portal site. To analysis on the signifying model, this study refers to semiotic researches. Over 98% users of local internet users visit portal site actively, and portal site has much influence in media. Portal site is devided profound level, surface level, and manifest level. First, onprofound level, the portal planners set up values which include core identity of the site. Second, on surface level, relative importance of each value is arranged systemically. Finally, on manifest level, value structure of the portal site is visualized and users can experience user interface. Users of portal sites are delivered messages on the profound level through interaction with user interface on manifest level. In those semiotic levels, portal site has opposing features to search engine sites. In addition to these features, each portal site makes different values on profound level. These values are made to a structure on surface level. The more important value, the higher attention the service is appeared. And user interface help transmit values and messages of the portal site to users. The Area of portal site is not fixed but can be expanded according to circulation of three stages. On first stage, portal planners make structures and rules of portal service. On second stage, power users and professional contents providers receive the structures and put contents they created in. On final stage, general visitors of portal site express their opinions about the service through clicking and input messages. Portal planners concentrate feedback of users and recheck values on profound level. Finally, they renew their value structure or add new values. Such discussion provides meaningful implications about portal site which serve as culture interface. Therefore, it needs to study on user interface and patterns of expansion of portal site continuously.
