Abstract
This sutdy will attempt to investigate a Korean pottery which first appeared in the latter Goryeo dynasty and consistently produced throughout the Joseon dynasty known as the Gojeokbae(高足杯, Stem cup), by examining the terminology and use as well as its general domestic acceptance. I will also attempt to identify the transitions in form, character, and significance of the Gojeokbae by organizing the patterns of production and consumption, and analyzing the abnormalities and decorations used. The Gojeokbae consists of an abnormal form where a long stem is attached to a porcelain bowl and although there is no confirmed mention of the Gojeokbae in either terminology or use domestically, through Chinese historical records there is evidence of the awareness of its physical characteristics since the Tang(唐)~Song(宋) dynasties. The Gojeokbae was referred to as the “Go-jeok” (the Chinese characters for high and foot), Gokakbae (高脚杯), Gojeokwan(高足碗), Gojeoljan(高足盞), Pabae(把杯), Gu(甌) among other various terms. Also, its use in tombs as burial items has been verified through excavation of gravesites since the Nam-jo(南朝) and Buk-jae(北齊) dynasties, and records indicate their use as teacups and wine glasses. The Gojeokbae which first appeared in the latter Goryeo period is presumed to have been produced using an imported model from the Yuan(元) dynasty through direct exchange between the Yuan imperial family and the Goryeo royal family after a historical period of Yuan intervention in Goryeo affairs. Domestically produced Gojeokbae were consistently manufactured as celadons, Buncheong ware Kilns and Porcelains, and its excavation from ruins of various characteristics to include dwellings, buildings, temples, and tombs all support this fact. Particularly, Gojeokbae excavated from production sites showed evident changes in its characteristics and form when compared with accompanying Jeon-Plate(전楪匙) and Yang-ijan(兩耳盞, 양이잔) and the identically exquisite form, quality, quantity, and kiln techniques used in the manufacturing process. Of the aforementioned porcelain items the Jeon-Plate was used as a plate on which the Yang-ijan(兩耳盞, 양이잔) was set upon, but there is a possibility of its use as a plate for the Hwa-hyoungjan (花形盞 ,화형잔) as well as the Gojeokbae. I have analyzed the form and decorations used in the Gojeokbae, using 367 vessels as subjects. Since the Gojeokbae is actually produced separately as the cup portion and the stem portion which are then connected together, I have examined them separately. However, since the consumer only used the final connected form, I have strived to comprehend the combined relationship through the decorations aspect. The cup portion shows distinct physical change depending on the porcelain group it belongs to. First, the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln cups are sometimes shown to have been produced simultaneously but a shift in the production of form I-(1) to I-(2) is more common in partial remain sites, and the porcelain form shows a alteration in form in the opposite sequence to the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln form. That is, the cup portion shows a pattern of change in the sequence of I-(1) a I-(2) a I-(1), displaying chronological development with changes that occur in the porcelain group, with the I-(1) form quantitatively superior and thus evidently the central form in each porcelain group. The stem portion connected to the cup can be generally categorized into the Trumpet (A form) or the Cylindrical (B form), but the A-(a) form was mainly produced. Despite this fact, there has been a large quality of cylindrical stems discovered in central locations within the Joseon loyal Kiln used to produce porcelain for the royal household and is believed to have been the main form in production in the Joseon loyal Kiln, fused with the I-(1) form of the porcelain cup. Subsequently, the decoration techniques and patterns on the Gojoekbae can be most commonly distinguished on the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln forms and exhibit differences based on geographical location. The Umkak(음각, Intaglio), Sanggam(象嵌, Inlay), Inwha-snaggam(印花-象嵌, Stamped-Inlay), Chulhwa(鐵花, Iron-Brown) techniques have all been confirmed and depending on the technique used the variety of decorative patterns display variation. First, the Inlaid technique is mostly seen in the Inlaid celadon Gojoekbae produced in the latter Goryeo period and shows engravings of Cloud and crane designs, Cloud and phoenix designs, Mums designs, Grass and Gloral designs. The Inwha-snaggam technique was inscribed on the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln Gojeokbae produced in the early days of the Joseon dynasty, but primarily the Inwha technique was used as the central technique where the collective stamped design and indivisual stamped design combined to form an engraving used on the cup and stem. The Iron-Brown technique was only produced in the Chungnam Gongju Hakbong-ri kiln area and displays distinct regional characteristics and of particular interest is the plant design inscribed on the cup. The inlay technique and the Iron-Brown technique both show regularity and consistency in the combination of the cup and stem. However, in the Inwha-snaggam technique used in the early Joseon period, the cup displays the Inwha-snaggam technique but the stem exhibits both the Inwha-snaggam and the inlay techniques, evidence of the simultaneous production of various forms as opposed to consistently producing one. In summary, the Gojeokbae produced in the Goryeo-Joseon period can be divided into three periods. The first period occurs in the early to late 14thcentury. It was produced in similar form to the celadon Gojeokbae produced in the longquan kiln(龍泉窯) of the Yuan dynasty, particularly during the mid-late Yuan period. In terms of decorative techniques, the appearance following the production of the Celadons Inlaid sexagenary cycle(간지명 상감청자) extends into the Joseon period. The second period occurs from the late 14th century to the mid 15th century. This stage marked a shift in the production aspect from the late-Goryeo Inlaid celadon to the early-Joseon celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln and exhibits regional distinction and the possibility of taxation system. In the Gwangju area of Gyeonggi Province, the porcelain Gojeokbae was produced beginning in the early 15th century at Usan-ri No. 17 and Gunup-ri No. 2 prior to the establishment of the Joseon loyal Kiln in the region. The third period takes place from the mid to late 15th century to the mid 17th century and is distinguished from the second period by the founding of the Joseon loyal Kiln as the starting point. With the establishment of the Joseon loyal Kiln the full-scale production of the porcelain begins to take place and in the countryside the production aspect shifts from the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln to the porcelain and the same kilns were used to produce the celadon and Buncheong ware Kiln Gojeokbaes as well as the porcelain Gojeokbae. Lastly, there are two points which play a major factor on the the characteristics and significance of the Gojeokbae. First, the first half of the 15th century to the first half of the 16th century, aconcentrated period of Gojeokbae production, also saw the implementation of the taxation system where pottery was subject to regional taxes. Second, we can infer the consistent demand and use of the Gojeokbae by observing production patterns and and excavation aspects from remain sites. One can reason its use as a ceremonial beverage holding vessel in the royal household as well as Buddhist temples. As a ritual item, and noting in particular its minimal change in shape and form, it can be said the Gojeokbae carries both the uniqueness and conservatism of a ritual item. With this, I have attempted to comprehend the change in production aspects, characteristics, and significance of the Gojeokbae, produced in the Goryeo-Joseon period (14th-17th centuries), through its terminology, purpose, importation, and production.
