Abstract
SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 11.5 프로그램을 이용하여 분석하였다. The purpose of this study was to examine the participation motivation in after-school yoga activities among middle schoolers and the effect of the activities on their satisfaction level with school life, their most crucial living environments, in an effort to ensure the efficiency of the after-school program. The subjects in this study were students who took after-school yoga classes in middle schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 230 students were gathered, and 223 answer sheets were analyzed except seven incomplete ones. As for data analysis, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression procedures were utilized, and a SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 11.5 program was employed. The findings of the study were as follows: First, regarding the relationship of the general characteristics of the middle school students to their participation motivation in after-school yoga activities, gender had no significant impact on their motivation. By grade, achievement motivation was more influential among the seventh graders than the eighth and ninth graders. As to connections between the degree of participation and the output of it, the frequency of participation made a significant difference to that. The students who participated in yoga activities more often were more motivated to do that to improve their health/physical fitness and make good use of leisure time, and achievement motivation was stronger among those students as well. Second, concerning connections between the general characteristics and satisfaction level with school life(peer relationship, relationship with teachers, learning activities, rule abiding and school events), the boys were significantly better satisfied than the girls with learning activities, school events and overall school life. By grade, the eighth graders were significantly better contented with learning activities than the seventh and ninth graders. In terms of the impact of participation term, the students who took part in yoga activities for less than six months were significantly different in satisfaction level with school events from those who did that for six months or more. By participation frequency, there was a significant gap in satisfaction level with rule abiding between the students who did that twice a week and the others. By the intensity of participation, the students who spent less than two hours practicing yoga were significantly different than those who spent two hours or more in satisfaction level with peer relationship, relationship with teachers, learning activities and overall school life. No significant gap was found in satisfaction level with rule abiding. Third, as for links between participation motivation and satisfaction with school life, the motivation of health and physical fitness had a statistically significantly positive correlation to satisfaction at peer relationship, relationship with teachers, learning activities, school events and school life. That had no statistically significant correlation to satisfaction with rule abiding. And achievement motivation and motivation of making good use of leisure time had a statistically significantly positive correlation to satisfaction at peer relationship, relationship with teachers, learning activities, rule abiding, school events and school life. As for the impact of participation motivation on satisfaction with school life, satisfaction level at peer relationship and relationship with teachers exerted a statistically significant influence on the motivation of health/physical fitness. Satisfaction level with learning activities and school events was under the statistically significant influence of achievement motivation, and motivation of health/physical fitness and achievement motivation had a statistically significant impact on satisfaction level with rule abiding. The above-mentioned findings suggested that yoga programs with a different degree of difficulty should be conducted in a different manner in consideration of how long students learned to practice yoga, which is expected to provided greater motivation to them and to let them find it more interesting and satisfactory to learn yoga. A variety of programs and teaching methods should be prepared so that they could be better motivated to learn something valuable from yoga and enjoy it instead of merely trying to boost their school grades. And in which way yoga education should be provided for them to get rid of their stress and find it worthwhile to learn yoga to make good use of leisure time should carefully be studied.
