Abstract
The Mechanism of Capitalistic market economy is at the end of it's rope. It is easy to observe plenty of negative effects that come from Capitalism. It includes big differences between the poor and the rich that have increased, the violation of an ecosystem the should be human being's habitation, the moral hazard and economic crisis. In spite of these terrible effects, Capitalistic market economy still has hegemony around the world. In this thesis, we would like to discuss Capitalistic market economy's fundamental problems and also consider an alternative society from the theological viewpoint. Capitalism has a tendency toward "commodification of everything" as a "historical social system". Capitalism could be held through the commodification of social relationship including human beings and their environment. It allowed people to live as isolated individuals by alienating them from their neighbor and their environment. However, human beings cannot live as an isolated existence. It is human being's nature as ethical beings to live with responsibility of relationships. Economic liberalism regards Capitalism as the institution from human being's nature which is "rational exchanger". They believe that the institution is able to bring economic prosperity and social harmony. Since economic liberalism is based on these concepts about the world and human beings, it could not be efficient at all for making modern individual's conscience of the fact that they have the responsibility to care for themselves, their neighbor, and their environment. Karl Marx revealed that the Capitalistic commodities's relation is fetishistic by economic verification. Karl Polanyi criticized the historical process of Capitalism with Marx's intuition. They showed that Capitalism's homogenizing process has a tendency toward the commodification of everything. It prohibits human being's ethical nature from working and causes the social relations to be "embedded" in the economic system. In the following, it makes all the people live as an isolated exchanger. However, Marx and Polanyi's critics are based on the thoughts that "human beings" should exist as "an individual in the community" and the "society" also should be understood form the "holistic viewpoint". The Christians community prevents Capitalism's homogenizing process from violating the ethical nature. In addition, it has the responsibility to recover the "society as a organism" thorough the alternative society. This is because the ethos of Western Europe and North America, which are responsible for the development of Capitalism, started from the christian tradition. Recently, historical Jesus studies have shown that the Jesus movement developed spontaneously in Galilee's villages, which had traditional norms disrupted by the Roman Empire's exploitation. This movement asked the community's members to grasp their life again in Galilee's villages. After the Jesus movement, and his death and the Resurrection, the primitive Christian community started. They had the resistance against the Roman Empire and have the equal and reciprocal life in their community. These could allow today's Christians to make the alternative community and try to realize in realistic areas. Finally, it is necessary that people are responsible for themselves, their neighbor ant the environment of the equal life in the real alternative society. Thus, the real alternative society should accept all the community's members' opinions democratically and the wealth that was from the community's production factor should be distributed among the members according to "their labor and needs". Also, it has to be a producer and consumer's cooperative association which are in the concrete, local region in order to hold and reconstruct their economic life. From the viewpoint of the Gospel that teaching "the uniqueness of the individual and the oneness of mankind", Polanyi reinterpreted Marx and so could get the alternative society's vision. He found that the Jesus movements and the primitive Christian community's vision about the Kingdom of God were "reconciliated" societies on the earth as harmony with "supreme actuality", the God. It could motivate Polanyi to try to overcome Capitalism and consider th alternative community to recover "the society as a organism" from the "holistic viewpoint".
