Translating Context Together with Text in TV Donghwa Haengbokhan Saesang

Abstract

This thesis is a translated book of short anecdotes focusing on unique aspects of Korean culture that survive in today’s daily lifestyle. The translation aims to satisfy market requirements for English-speaking readers while preserving Korean cultural elements from the original text in the translation. The source text is a series of anecdotes originally produced for TV as five-minute animated cartoons, TV Donghwa Haengbokhan Saesang. The stories are written in the style of inspirational anecdote familiar to English-speaking readers from popular works such as Chicken Soup for the Soul (Canfield). This translated book is also accompanied by a theoretical paper, which gives an overview of market forces affecting Korean translation to English and of previous theories in translation and analyzes the best approach to preserving culture in translation. Specifically deals with the issues of literal vs. free translation, the power imbalances in translation, and the effect of these issues on dominant translation approaches. To overcome losses in cultural context resulting from attempts to conform to textual standards of the dominant culture during translation, this thesis proposes a new conceptual model for translating culture and linguistic context together with text, the Moving Context Model. Advantages of this model for maintaining readability and literary quality, while at the same time preserving the cultural elements of the original text, are discussed.;본 논문의 목적은 일상 생활 속에서 접할 수 있는 한국 문화 고유의 특성들을 다룬 일화 모음집「TV 동화 행복한 세상」을 번역하는 데 있다. 이때 번역의 원칙은 원본의 문화적 요소들을 살리면서도 영어권 독자들을 만족시킬 수 있는 것으로서, 본 논문은 이 같은 원칙에 부합할 수 있는 번역 방법의 모색을 병행하고 있다. 「TV 동화 행복한 세상」은 TV에서 5분씩 방송된 만화 형식의 연재물을 모은 책으로, 영어권 독자들에게 친숙한 「영혼을 위한 닭고기 스프」처럼 독자들에게 감동을 주는 이야기들로 구성되어 있다. 번역과 함께 포함된 학술 논문에서는 과거의 번역이론 정리와 더불어 한국어의 영어 번역에 영향을 주는 시장의 힘에 대해 개괄하고, 원문의 문화적 요소들을 살릴 수 있는 최상의 번역 방식에 대해 고찰한다. 구체적으로, 이 장은 의역과 직역에 관한 쟁점, 번역에서 나타나는 힘의 불균형, 그리고 이러한 논의들이 주류의 번역 방식에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 더 나아가 본고는 주류 문화의 규준에 따르는 번역에서 필연적으로 나타나는 문화적 맥락의 손상을 막기 위해 새로운 개념의 번역 모델을 제시한다. 이 모델을 문화와 언어적 문맥을 원문과 함께 번역하는 “유동적 문맥 모델”이라 칭한다. 원작의 문학성과 가독성을 떨어뜨리지 않으면서도 그 안에 담긴 문화적 요소들을 유지시킬 수 있는 것이 이 모델의 장점이라 할 수 있다.
