Abstract

John Woods Duke(1899-1984)는 20세기 미국의 작곡가이자 피아니스트였다. 그의 중요한 업적은 예술가곡 작곡 분야에 있다. Duke의 예술가곡은 낭만적이며, 선율이 아름답고, 양식 면에서는 매우 전통적인 스타일을 지닌다. 이러한 Duke의 예술가곡이 미국 가곡 역사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 이유는, 그의 가곡이 미국의 시를 음악과 훌륭하게 융합시켜, 미국 가곡의 미학적 가치를 크게 승화시켰기 때문이다. 이 논문은 본인의 졸업 연주곡이었던 Duke의 가곡 「The Bird」,「A Piper」, 「The Babe」를 시의 내용과 해석, 곡의 형식과 조성, 주제의 발전과 곡의 통일성 등을 중심으로 연구 분석한 것이다. 「The Bird」,「A Piper」, 「The Babe」에 나타난 공통적인 특징은, 각 곡의 특징적인 주제가 곡 전체를 통하여 계속적으로 축소, 확대, 발전되면서 곡을 일관성 있게 구성하고 있다는 것이다. 그리고 분위기 전환이나 곡의 단조로움을 피하기 위하여 수시로 조성을 바꾸는 특징을 지닌다. 또한 가사와 리듬의 조화, 그리고 성악과 피아노의 상호 유기적인 연관성이 각 곡들의 구조를 더욱 견고하게 만들고 있다. 특히 「The Bird」는 John Woods Duke의 대표적인 가곡으로서 시와 음악이 완전히 하나가 되는 예술가곡의 극치를 보여주고 있다. ;John Woods Duke (1899-1984) was a twentieth-century American composer and a pianist. His chief achievements lie in the composition of art songs. Duke's art songs are romantic and have beautiful melodies and a conventional style. The reason these art songs of Duke hold and important position in the history of American song is that his works are an excellent synthesis of American poems and music, and elevated the aesthetical value of American song to the greatest extent. This study investigates and analyzes the contents and forms of 「The Bird」,「A Piper」and 「The Babe」composed by Duke, which were part of the repertoire for the writer's final recital, centering around his interpretations, sound formation, development of theme and melodic unity. The common characteristics of 「The Bird」,「A Piper」and 「The Babe」are as follows. Each song has its own specific theme which consistently develops in reduction and expansion throughout. Modulation is often used to change the mood and avoid dullness. But these songs progress naturally without modulation to related keys in that enharmonic tones are used or consistent patterns are presented. Also, harmony between lyrics and rhythm and the organic correlation between the vocal and piano parts further consolidate each song's structure. These songs often change meter to adjust to the poetic rhythm and the lyrics are inflected by rhymes. Particularly, 「The Bird」is one representative of John Woods Duke's songs which attains the highest perfection of the art song by its complete unity between poem and music.
