Abstract
Soojong Temple located in Mt. Woon-gil, Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, has the eight angled five story Stone Stupa, 3.3 meters tall. Thirty Buddhist Statues were discovered in this stupa several decades ago. In 1957, taking this stupa to pieces, Eight Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Statues were found in the basement, and three Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Statues and three Wooden Statues in the first floor, four Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues inside the first floor roof stone. Thirteen years after that, in 1970, nine Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Statues were found inside the second floor roof stone and three Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues inside the third floor roof stone respectively. This discovery is regarded as a special case because quite a large number of Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues made respectively in different eras were enshrined in a single stone stupa. These statues have their historical significance as for the fact that the year of the manufacture and the names of sponsors can be clearly known from the inscriptions, the documents inside the statues. Especially, the stone stupa in Soojong Temple has a special meaning in that the statues in the stupa were made in the age of suppressed Buddhism. The purpose of this research is to study diversely on the characteristics and significance of the Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Statues out of the Eight Angled Five story Stone Stupa in Soojong Temple which have not been regarded as being important. The inscription, the document inside Sakyamuni Buddha and the document of creating Vairocana have revealed the background of creating the Buddhist statues. It says the creating of Buddhist statues was sponsored by the royal family. In 1493, Lady Sookyong(淑容) Hong, Lady Sookyong(淑容) Jung and Lady Sookwon(淑媛) Kim remodeled Sakyamuni Buddha and enshrined three Gilt-Bronze statues and three Wooden Statues inside the first floor stone which Lady Meongbin(明嬪) Kim had consecrated. After that, in 1628, Queen Inmok disjoined the Stone Stupa and enshrined twenty-three Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues inside the basement, the first, second and third floor roof stone respectively. Soojong Temple is said to be established in 1459 by King Sejo. However, Sarita Sutra of princess Junghae, the daughter of King Taejong, built in 1439, shows that Soojong Temple had been built by sponsorship of a royal family before its reconstruction(1459). Soojong Temple had rapidly grown up under the protection of Queens of King Sungjong period. until the first half of the 17th century, when Queen Inmok enshrined Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues, the temple had given a special meaning to the females of the royal family. It suggests the influence of Soojong temple was great. The inscription, 'Donated by Lady Meongbin(明嬪) Kim' has been carved on the bottom of Gilt-Bronze Sakyamuni Buddha. According to the document inside the Buddha, we can recognize that the royal concubines of King Sungjong consecrated Sakyamuni Buddha praying for prominence of the royal household, the moral supremacy of the kings and the everlasting prosperity of the dynasty. The twenty three Gilt Bronze Buddhist statues, which Queen Inmok enshrined inside the stupa in Soojong Temple in 1628, are remarkable representatives sponsored by the court even at the age of the suppressed Buddhism, the 17th century. Queen Inmok sponsored the Buddha statues in order to pray for the eternal peace of the son and her family killed by her stepson, King Gwangheagun. 'Court sculptor Sung-in' was found at the document carved on the bottom of pedestal of Gilt-Bronze Vairocana. Therefore the Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues created by the sponsorship of Queen Inmok are the most ambitious works of the time by the top class court sculptor Sung-in. The Gilt-Bronze Buddhist Statues inside the Eight angled five story stone stupa in Soojong Temple are meaningful in that the females of the Chosun Court including the queen and royal concubines enshrined the statues for the prosperity of the dynasty. In 1493, the stands of Gilt-Bronze Sakyamuni Buddha was not form of a triad. The Sakyamuni Buddha is thought to be enshrined first, and the Bodhisattvas Image in the Meditation Pose and Ksitigarbha Image were enshrined later. Accordingly, the statues were formed to be a triad. The twenty-three Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues created in 1628 are not enshrined in the same form. However three pairs of the 20 Buddhist Statues remained are shown as the form of triads. By the above statements, it can be suggested that the twenty-three statues might have been molded according to a regular form at first. The Buddhist Statues seems to have been enshrined in different layers due to the Stone Stupa's narrow inner space. The Buddhist Statues enshrined in 1493 show the 15th century's style of the Buddha statues that combined the traditional style of Goryo and Tibetian style from the Ming Dynasty. The Buddhist statues created in 1628 shows the composite of the first and the second half of Chosun's style. Therefore the Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues of Soojong Temple have a significant meaning in that shows the style of the Buddha statues from the 15th to the 17th century. The Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues of Soojong Temple are worthy of attention because these statues were made by the sponsorship of the females of the royal family, and made by the outstanding artist who took the new style of Buddha statues. The Gilt-Bronze Buddhist statues sponsored by the females of the royal family in Soojong Temple are representative Buddha statues of Chosun Dynasty. Because they show the changed features of Buddha statues from the 15th to the 17th century chronologically.;경기도 남양주 운길산에 위치한 수종사에는 3.3m의 팔각오층 석탑이 있다.
