Abstract
This thesis is a study about Institutional Critique art and discourse which were emerged during 1970s in America and Europe. Institutional Critique art made an attempt to criticize the pure realm of modernism art and the function of modern museum. The past studies about the Institutional Critique art concentrated on Individual artists or artistic form in the realm of conceptual art. Institutional Critique discourse was also studied as a field of museology by the critics. However, the discourse of Institutional Critique was formed through artworks which made the discourse full, its theory and art have an intimate and mutual relation with each other. The context of art and discourse of Institutional Critique can be examined when they were analyzed under the same category. Accordingly, in this thesis I would examine the Institutional Critique art as a visual realization of the discourse. First, I would observe the social and theoretical atmosphere resisting all kinds of power at the end of the 1960s. The 'anti-authoritarianism' in the society and culture led reconsidering modernism art and institution. And then, I would study the avant-garde art in contemporary arthistory, because it became the precedent of Institutional Critique art. Later, I would analyze works of Institutional Critique artists, especially Michael Asher, Daniel Buren, Marcel Broodthaers, and Hans Haacke. They are some of the exemplary artists who treated institutional spaces, led by museum, as the material of their work. Especially, Michael Asher deconstructed the exhibition space. By doing so, he revealed that the museum had established their illusory space through their structural foundation. Daniel Buren saw the art institution as a type of 'frame' that functioned as a boundary in various respects. Thus, he strove to produce works that could dismantle these various boundaries of exhibition spaces, and to communicate with outside the institution. The operating system of museum was also a subject for criticizing. Marcel Broodthaers disclosed the ideology behind the art institution by constructing his own museum. Furthermore, Hans Haacke focused on the social context behind the operation of the art institution and attempted to make the social issues known by the public. In other word, The artists of the institutional critique in the 1970s approached the issues that were related to the art institution from different angles. They were not only artists but also theorists, and their works could not only be viewed but could also be read. By doing so, they could lead the discourse of the institutional critique to the fore. Thus, ultimately I would find out the significance of Institutional Critique art as the starting point of the expansion of the scope and meaning of the existing art scene. The Institutional critique art, which was raised inside the art institution that led the art scene, made it possible for the interest in a new era and society. And communicating with each period and context, the art of the institutional critique and its discourse consistently produced a critical viewpoint in art and the society. In this regard, when we examine the Institutional Critique art in line with discourse, the movement to a new art area can be captured.
