Abstract
This study comparatively evaluated the listening activities in the set of the present middle school English textbooks used in Beijing named English and the set of the present middle school English textbooks used in Shanghai named Oxford English. This study analyzed 300 listening activities in the six middle school English textbooks of English and 110 listening activities in the six middle school English textbooks of Oxford English. The research was conducted on how well the listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks, English and Oxford English, have met the current Chinese National English Curriculum, announced by Ministry of Education of China in 1999, and how the listening activities are presented in the two sets of middle school English textbooks. Through studying the listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks, the implication was presented for writing listening activities when English textbook writers prepare English textbooks in Beijing and Shanghai, and writing the most appropriate and effective listening activities for Chinese students in the particular context of China. McDonough and Shaw (1993) stated that evaluating English textbooks effectively is a very important professional activity for ESL/EFL teachers and in order to evaluate English textbooks, we can do either external evaluation or internal evaluation. However, in China, all of the research on English textbooks is based on a holistic approach (Xu, 2004), except for Xu’s (2004) study on the listening and speaking activities in middle school English textbooks; therefore, this study focused on internal evaluation for English textbooks. In China, the students in the middle schools of every province use the same set of middle school English textbooks, except for the students in the middle schools of Beijing and Shanghai. Beijing and Shanghai are the first and second most important cities to China, and also the most developed cities in the area of English education in the mainland of China. Therefore, this study focused on evaluating the English textbooks of Beijing and Shanghai. Furthermore, as it is noted in the Chinese National English Curriculum that middle school is the basic stage of teaching and learning English, this study focused on evaluating the English textbooks used in middle school. In addition, at present the emphasis of English teaching is to foster real communication ability and this trend is also reflected by the activities in English textbooks. Furthermore, listening is important to cultivate the whole of communicative abilities. Therefore, this study focused on evaluating the listening activities in English textbooks. In terms of evaluating an English textbook, as Byrd (2001) stated, the first important thing we must do is to investigate the relevance of the English textbooks to the national English curriculum. Therefore, firstly, this study investigated the relevance of the listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks to the Chinese National English Curriculum. In terms of listening activities, Elkhafaifi (2005) recommended that for a more natural listening environment, pre-listening preparation and post-listening assessment are needed. Therefore, this study secondly investigated whether there were pre-listening and post-listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks, and according to Underwood’s (1989) provision for the types of pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities, this study investigated the types of the pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks. Furthermore, because of the strong claim for bottom-up listening activities and integrative listening activities, this study thirdly investigated whether the two sets of middle school English textbooks included bottom-up and integrative listening activities according to Peterson’s (1991) classification for bottom-up, top-down and integrative listening activities. In order to go a step further to analyze the listening activities in the two sets of middle school English textbooks, on the basis of Kim’s (2001) criteria for listening activity analysis, this study fourthly analyzed the types of the listening activities, the types of the responses to the listening contents and the types of the comprehension to the listening contents. The findings of this study are as follows: Firstly, in terms of the relevance of the listening activities to the standards for middle school in the Chinese National English Curriculum, Oxford English is better than English, but neither set of middle school English textbooks is good enough for the needs of Chinese middle school students. Secondly, in terms of the proportions of pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities, English and Oxford English are both good; in terms of the types of pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities, English is better than Oxford English, but neither set of English textbooks is good enough in terms of Underwood’s (1989) provision for the types of pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities. Thirdly, in terms of the bottom-up, top-down and integrative listening activities, Oxford English is better than English, but English is not good enough in terms of Canale and Swain’s (1980) first crucial element (grammatical competence) for communicative competence and Jung’s (2004) recommendation for integrative listening activities. Fourthly, in terms of the further analysis of the listening activities, English is better than Oxford English, but neither set of middle school English textbooks is good enough in terms of Kim’s (2001) criteria for the types of listening activities, the types of responses to listening contents and the types of comprehension to listening contents. Therefore, the implications for pedagogy were set. Firstly, textbook writers both in Beijing and Shanghai should develop listening activities more related to the standards in the Chinese National English Curriculum. Secondly, textbook writers in both of the two cities should be more prudent in using the types of pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities, so they can provide students with varied and more balanced listening activities. Thirdly, textbook writers in Beijing must pay more attention to bottom-up and integrative listening activities. Fourthly, textbook writers both in Beijing and Shanghai should develop more listening activities which need an open ended response; they should develop more types of listening activities besides individual activities, such as listening activities which need to be done in pairs, in a small group or by the whole class; they should develop more listening activities which involve plentiful types of responses to listening contents; and they should develop more listening activities which involve inferred meaning comprehension. From this study, other implications arise for English textbook writing in China. When Chinese English textbook writers write listening activities for English textbooks, they should balance them in all the four areas: the relevance to the national English curriculum; pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening activities; bottom-up, top-down and integrative listening activities; and the three points -- the types of listening activities, the types of responses to listening contents, the types of comprehension to listening contents -- in Kim’s (2001) criteria. They can adapt the advantages of English and Oxford English in the different areas of the four areas. Therefore, for Chinese English textbook writers, a first important step is to take advantages of English and Oxford English’s strong points and to eliminate their weak points to make a more complete and satisfactory English textbook. At last for future research, two directions were provided. Firstly, future research should consider the sections for the other three language skills besides the listening skill in English textbooks. Secondly, future research needs more researchers from all the language skills to evaluate activities in the four language skills in English textbooks, and to share their knowledge and cooperate with each other to achieve higher reliability.
