Abstract
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), born in Hamburg, Germany, is a representative composer of the late romantic era. He established his own unique music style that sticks to classical traditions in the structure and form of the work and use romantic factors in relation with its harmony, rhythm, melody and sound. He had lots of interest in variations among various types of piano music. He employed thematic variation in two sonatas and composed five variations for piano solo, a variation for piano duet and a variation for two pianos. This study first examined the musical features of Brahms' piano works and then explored general features detected in his overall variations. Based on this, 「Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24」, the work considered Brahms' best variation, was analyzed and studied. 「Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24」 composed in 1861, during his second period of piano solo music, used the last theme of 「Suites des Pieces de Clavecin in B♭ Major」 as it was. While Handel added five variations to the theme in the original work, Brahms wrote the work composed of Aria and 25 variations and fugues. The theme of the work is in 4/4 time, B♭ major and binary form. The work largely sticks to its theme, exhibiting uniformity. Brahms also made some changes in their rhythms, harmonies and melodies, showing his unique characteristics in each of the variations. These variations belong to characteristic variation. All of the variations except for the 5th, 6th, 13th, and 21st variation are in B♭ major, the same tonality of the theme, and all of the variations except for the 19th, 21st and 24th are written in 4/4 time. As for the forms of the variations, the binary form of 4+4 is largely used in most of the variations, but in the 15th variation, the form of 4+5 is used. A variety of rhythms including polyrhythmics, hemiola, syncopation and siciliano rhythm (the 19th variation) are used in the variations to create various changes. As for melody, the theme melodies, such as the melody in the style of Hungarian Rhapsody (the 13th variation) and melody in the style of musette (the 22nd variation), are changed freely or used in unique styles, displaying the features of characteristic variations. Brahms employed fugue technique, one of the elements that characterize the Baroque style, in the last part of the work. The fugue he borrowed from a theme by Handel displays the expansion of the theme and a good combination of the elements of counterpoint like inversion. Its theme and accompaniment are, however, sometimes given in 3rd, and 6th degrees in parallel and counterpoint decoration in the form of broken chord figuration shows the fugue escaped from the "strict" form. Of Brahms' variations, 「Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24」 is highly considered in terms of scale and content. The work containing outstanding thematic variations is worth being researched. This study analyzed the differences and features of each of the variations of Brahms' piano work 「Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24」. The study aimed at clearly understanding the composer's intention and helping to play the work. Besides, it sought to perceive the position of Brahms who established his own music style in the romantic era from a new perspective.;독일 함부르크에서 태어난 요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms,1833-1897)는 작품의 구성이나 형식적인 면에서는 고전적 전통을 고수하고 화성, 리듬, 선율, 음향 등에 있어서는 낭만주의적 색채를 표현함으로써 자신만의 독특한 음악세계를 확립한 후기 낭만주의 시대의 대표적 작곡가이다.
