This paper is a study on the androgyny represented by Poet figures of the nineteenth century English long poems, William Wordsworth’s The Prelude, Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh. Although these poems have different forms and contents, they have one common aspect; all of them show the process of each Poet figure’s inner growth. The Prelude, subtitled as “Growth of a Poet’s Mind,” describes Wordsworth’s interaction with nature, the Revolution, books, and men, thereby tracing the Poet’s journey into maturity. Prometheus Unbound presents the phase of Prometheus’ restoration of an ideal mental status as a Poet through his self-enlargement by pity, sympathy, and imagination. Aurora Leigh shows Aurora’s inner-fulfillment and acceptance of others along with her achievement both in art and love. Androgyny in these poems merges “masculinity” and “femininity” as well as other contradictory values, and symbolizes poet-hero’s individual mental growth with the vision of an ideal community. In The Prelude, Wordsworth attempts to show his androgynous mind in his retrospective writing on masculine imagination’s interaction with feminized nature. However, his maturity comes not from that interaction but from the recognition of androgyny both in nature and imagination. Wordsworth demonstrates an androgynous poet-prophet’s position on the basis of this synthesis which blurs the boundary between culturally structured “masculinity” and “femininity.” Shelley’s Prometheus reveals androgyny through his pity, sympathy, and imagination. Prometheus’ pity and sympathy, just as the Poet’s imagination, serve to unite self and atitype, and induce the cosmic harmony of “One Mind.” The Union of Prometheus and Asia symbolizes their achievement of androgyny and their creation of poetry implies its eternal revolutionary potential. Aurora in Aurora Leigh represses her femininity and assumes masculinity to make a success of poetic vocation; however, she restores her femininity experiencing motherhood. Aurora’s dream of “New Jerusalem” arises from her androgynous mind which overcomes the walls of gender, class, and nation. Woman as she is, Aurora, the poet-prophet presents an integral and harmonious vision and anticipates an ideal community built by her bardic vocation. Androgyny in The Prelude, Prometheus Unbound, and Aurora Leigh is the symbol of synthetic mind that acquires alternative value through the escape from the narrow limit of self. This distinguishing feature shows the spirit of the authors and their age, that embraces the marginalized beings and acknowledges or vindicates the rights and the roles of women and the Other.;본 논문은 19세기 영국의 장편시 중 워즈워스(William Wordsworth)의 『서곡』(The Prelude), 셸리(Percy Bysshe Shelley)의 『해방된 프로메테우스』(Prometheus Unbound), 브라우닝(Elizabeth Barrett Browning)의 『오로라 리』(Aurora Leigh)를 중심으로 시인 유형의 인물이 지니는 양성성(androgyny)을 분석하는 것이다.
