Benjamin Britten의 연가곡 <On This Island, Op.11>에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 연구자의 석사학위 취득을 위한 졸업 연주회 작품의 하나인 벤자민 브리튼 (Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 연가곡<On This Island(이 섬에서), Op.11>(1937)에 관한 분석 연구이다. 이 논문을 통해 브리튼의 생애와 활동과 당시의 시대적 배경 및 음악적 흐름을 살펴보고 그의 연가곡 <On This Island>에서 나타난 시와 음악과의 관계를 중점 연구하여 연주자에게 이해를 더하고 실제 연주에 도움을 주는 것을 연구 목적으로 한다. 20세기 뛰어난 작곡자이자 피아니스트, 지휘자로 활동한 브리튼은 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695) 이후 침체되었던 영국 음악을 국제적으로 끌어올려 새로운 중흥기를 마련하게 하였다. 그는 활발한 작곡 활동으로 종교음악, 발레음악, 관현악곡, 실내악곡, 독주곡 등 거의 모든 장르의 작품을 남겼다. 그 중 80곡이 넘는 성악작품은 그의 인성(人聲)에 대한 깊은 애정을 나타내는 것으로, 특히 그는 시와 음악이 결합하여 명확한 메시지를 전달하는 연가곡에 집중하였다. 연가곡을 통해 나타나는 시에 대한 이해와 감각은 그의 뛰어난 문학적 재능에 기초한 것으로 여러 시대와 언어를 아우르는 범세계적인 것이었다. 그는 음악에서 시의 내용을 우선하였으며 순수 음악 외 다른 요소는 배제하여 음악의 절대 미학적 가치를 중시하였다. 브리튼의 초기 연가곡에 많은 영향을 끼친 위스턴 휴 오든(Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907?1973)은 분석적이고 사회 비판적인 작풍으로 1930년대 영국을 이끈 대표적 시인이다. 브리튼은 그의 시집『Look, Stranger! (보라, 나그네여!)』(1936)에서 영감을 얻어 연가곡 <On This Island>를 작곡하였다. 본 연구자는 <On This Island>를 통해 브리튼에게 문학적 영감을 환기시킨 오든의 생애와 그의 작품경향에 대하여 알아보고, 이어 20세기 여러 양식을 자신만의 독창적 어법으로 발전시켜 음악적으로 시의 심상을 재현하고자 했던 브리튼 이상을 분석을 통해 알아보았다. 결과적으로 브리튼은 시대의 혼돈 속에 간결하고 명확한 신고전주의를 바탕으로 현대어법과 전통선율을 접목한 절충적 양식을 추구하였다. 기본적인 조성체계 안에서 시어의 효과적인 표현을 위해 복조와 다조를 통한 조성의 모호성을 꾀하였으며, 각운의 음악적 배치와 다이나믹의 변화로 이를 지지하였다. 이러한 다양한 기법의 사용은 여러 음악사상의 변화에 따른 것으로 그가 활동한 20세기 전반의 사회적으로 나타난 특성에 기인한 것임을 알 수 있다.;This thesis is an analytical research on Benjamin Britten's (1913-1976) song cycle <On This Island>, which is one of my Master's graduation recital reperitoire. The purpose of this thesis is to closely examine the social and musical trend during the life period of Britten, and research the relationship between the music and the text of the song cycle <On This Island>. It will promote players' understanding and help their performance practices. As a prominent pianist as well as a conductor of the 20th century, Britten attributed in arousing the level of United Kingdom's music which had been inactive since the days of Henry Purcell(1659-1695), to an international level, and accelerating its development to its peak. He actively worked on almost every genre or music including sacred, ballet, orchestral, chamber, and solo. More than 80 pieces of his vocal music shows his deep affection for the human voice. He focused on combining poetry with music to deliver a message precisely through a song cycle. Britten's sense and understanding of poetry reflected in the song cycles, was based on his literary talents, and is globally recognized, transcending many centuries and languages. He prioritized the poetic meanings in his music, and eliminated other elements other than serious music, and emphasized on the absolute aesthetic value of music. Wystan Hugh Auden(1907-1973) is one of the most representative British poet in the 1830s, known for his analytical and critical view of the society. Inspired by Auden's poem 『Look, Stranger!』, Britten composed the song cycle <On This Island>. This research looks in depth into the life and the poetic trend of Auden who provided literary inspiration for Britten. It also focuses on the ideals of Britten, and his consistent efforts to develop the various forms of the 20th century into an innovative expression of his own, and revive the poetic image through music. As a result, in the midst of the confusion of the time, Britten pursued an eclectic form of modern expression and classical tune based on the simplicity and clarity of neoclassicism. Britten attempted equivocality of composition by using polytonality and bitonality in order to effectively express a poetic dictation within the basic composition structure. He also advocated for the musical allocation of rhymes through variations in dynamics. These methods are due to the changes in many musical phenomenons, a property that can be found in many social aspects throughout the 20th century.
