Abstract
This study starts from the necessity of a deeper introspection of the politics of the victim in feminism. The androcentric subject is said to objectify women, but objectification necessarily occurs also from the victim subject to the oppressor or dominant group, because the Self is constructed by what it excludes, by boundaries with the other, and exists only by reproducing one's self-centeredness repeatedly. If we want to overcome power relations, then we need to investigate the inherently dichotomous nature of the Self. Buddhist teachings of selflessness shows that self-centeredness is an effect of dualistic delusion, and that dichotomy should be rediscovered as co-dependent arising, whose ultimate meaning is Emptiness. From the teachings of Madhyamaka-Sa?stra we can conclude that two items which are co-dependent can not exist each one as a substance. Much feminist theorists have discussed on the false dichotomy of self/other, mind/body, nature/society, private/public. Judith Butler's theory on 'the deed without a doer behind' can be understood as the deconstruction of linear causality. But Buddhism differs in that it applies this deconstruction in every dimension and completely. The dualism of entity and its attribut, the sense organs and the perceived objects, existence and non-existence are all said to be an illusion, and even the Emptiness is empty. The philosophy of Deconstruction is very similar to Emptiness in that it deconstruct essentialism and causality, but differs from Buddhism by being situated in time and space, incessantly repeating and deconstructing itself. From the Buddhist point of view, even time and space is a mind-made construction. Incomplete deconstruction involves an unacknowledged dichotomy of selfishness, being a potential threat which enforces boundaries and excludes other subjects. Buddhism emphasizes that the first person I, the subject itself of the deconstruction movement is the ultimate delusion. This practice can only be achieved by oneself but as it must be displayed in social environments, efforts to improve social conditions are thus of great importance and then naturally meets with concerns of feminism. The contribution of Buddhist epistemology to feminism are as follow. First, comprehension of Buddhist non-duality leads to a paradigm of compassion and forgiveness. In painful situations, dichotomous thinking appears as a tendency to reify the causes of oppression, preventing from deeper understanding of one's own contribution. On the other hand, the concept of karma enables expansion of causality in the mindfulness dimension. The Mind as an all-encompassing view comprehending subject and object - for all that is perceived is part of oneself - is open to unlimited possibilities. The concept of karma also helps to become conscious of how the mind reproduces painful reality by its own feeling of being victimized. This can help to conceptually understanding the possibility of forgiveness. If we see the relation of 'forgiveness' and 'the social context of forgiveness' in a linear causal way, forgiveness appears to be possible only when conditions are changed. But in an inter-causality logic we can get over this limited view. When we realize that cause and effect are inter-dependent and thus empty, we finally understand the inherent freedom of the Mind and the possibility of getting out of subjection from objective conditions. Secondly, comprehension of Buddhist non-duality can be practiced by faith. Once we perceive the relation of the individual and the society as mutual penetration, we can know that all the phenomena arisen in the personal scale are at the same time reflected in the whole society. This shows that the mindfulness practice have an effect on the 'reality outside' and thus make realize that positive faith is in itself an important social practice. Faith is not just a matter of personal choice but can be one of the most powerful reality creating tool. In that point of view, even the systems of oppression once thought to be outside oneself are recognized as informations incorporated to one's own mind(unconscious) and that is the very reason why they can be recreated in a different way. Solidarity in common positive faith - instead of common feeling of being a victim - can be understood as the Politics of Faith. Thirdly, Buddhist practice based on realization of emptiness can contribute to social movements unfolded in a non-dualistic ways. When we perceive situations with a peaceful epistemology we can create changes more efficiently. To take in events that happened as they are means to get over the perspective of the victim and having less obstacles in creating reality. This is due to the mind's capability to choose change unconditionally as the logic of inter-causality makes it possible, and also because when we realize that there is no outside thus no others, common sense of responsibility becomes maximized. Then we understand that a feminism which takes responsibility of the systems of oppression - by recognizing it as part of oneself - will be more successful. Because just as women are not essentially existing so neither do men, and their existence is a fictional construction waiting to be perceived/created in another way. Non-dualistic feminism would certainly be aware of more efficient ways that will not objectify neither oppressor nor collective agent of oppression.
