Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to consider aggression developed by Donald Woods Winnicott who sees aggression as the positive thing and to apply this understanding to pastoral counseling. Generally, people think that aggression is very destructive and negative because aggressive behaviors are revealed in terms of directive harm to our neighborhood, society and country as well as individuals. Winnicott, however, interprets aggression very positively. Through comparing other scholars whose view is negative to aggression with Winnicott's understanding of aggression, the meaning of aggression can be newly accepted and this new meaning gives useful implications to pastoral counseling To compare theories, cognitive psychology and psychoanalysis are introduced at frist. Cognitive psychologists usually focus which factors make aggression induced. They think that the main cause of arousing aggression is unpleasant or negative environments and the level and intensity of aggression depend on individuals' cognitive or information processing abilities. Thus, they try to remove aggressive behaviors and make children not to be revealed in destructive environments. On the other hand, psychologists like Freud and Klein focus on root of aggression itself. Freud considers aggression as an instinct and it came from thanatos(death instincts) which is primitive and destructive. Klein also accepted aggression came from thanatos. They think aggression is an instinct so it cannot help arousing during life. The solution of aggressive behaviors is to control or reduce it. Cognitive psychologists and psychologists have different origin and cause of aggression, but in common that aggression is the negative meanings. That leads to focus on behaviors modification so aggression is to be controled or removed as negative acts. However, Winnicott interprets aggression as the positive thing. He accepted aggression comes from the instinct but it comes from eros (life instincts) not thanatos. The root of it is very contrary to that of psychologist. There are main characters that show how Winnicott's understandings of aggression is positive. Firstly, the origin of aggression itself is positive. Prior to integration of the personality there is aggression and aggression is part of primitive expression of love. That aggression is motility and almost synonymous with activity. Secondly, Unlike other scholars who think aggression aroused by frustration of instincts, aggression is necessary factors of developing personality. Without it, true self is not formed. Lastly, destructive aggression can be changed to creative aggression if enough good mothering is offered to infants. How does the positive aggression developed by Winnicott affect counseling situation and pastoral counseling? Firstly, positive meaning changes therapy approach. Winnicott expresses youth who has antisocial actions send a sign that gives out terrible situations and offers holding environment. He thinks antisocial actions are the important sign of hope. Thus, therapy is to focus on offering holding environment and reexperiencing mothering care. Also, the end of therapy about aggression is not to remove it but to transform creative energy. Creative energy is to support self-esteem, fuel work, contribute zest to love, give us energy to fight for causes we believe in, help us endure suffering and survive. Thus, aggression is needed for passionate commitment to a person, a cause, a God. Creative aggression also makes christians' religious life more lively and build real relationship with God. However, this creative aggression is repressed so changed to repressed aggression. It is hard for Christians who have repressed aggression to have sense of self, reality and ambivalence to one object. If Christians' aggression is repressed, they just follow image of God and christian values suggested by church and finally have false religious life. Thus, christian community needs to make an offer holding environment. Pastoral counseling itself can be the space to transformation from destructiveness to creativeness using resources that could be provided by pastoral counseling like understandings of creative aggression by Winnicott. If pastoral counseling can be the space of transformation, christians can experience real God and life more lively.
