Abstract
The Shadow of a Gunman(1923), Juno and the Paycock(1925), The Plough and the Stars(1926)에 반복 등장하는 유형적 인물들에 관하여 고찰하였다. The Shadow of a Gunman은 1920년의 영국과 아일랜드 사이의 게릴라전을 배경으로 Minnie라는 한 개인이 무모하게 희생되는 것을 보여 주었다. Juno and the Paycok는 1922년 동족간의 전투인 시민내전 당시, 한 가족의 몰락을 다루었다. The Plough and the Stars는 부활절 봉기를 배경으로 한 공동주택 집단내의 인물들이 희생되는 과정을 보여주었다. In this thesis I have analyzed the type characters that appear repetitiously in the three earlier works of Sean O'Casey (1880-1964)- The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1925), The Plough and the Stars (1926). These three plays are called Dublin Trilogy because all deal with the pains of the poor during Irish war and revolution for independence. The Shadow of a Gumnan uses the guerilla warfare between the I.R.A. and the British forces in 1920 as its setting and in it Minnie, an innocent individual, is sacrificed recklessly. Juno and the Paycock on the other hand portrays the fall of a family during the Civil War in 1922. The Plough and the Stars depicts the process in which each person of a tenement is trapped by the Easter Rising in 1916. The three type characters-"illusory idealists", "strong women", "mock-heroes"-are common to Dublin Trilogy which deals with the tragedy of an individual, a family and a community. O'Casey mocks the so-called patriots and heroes-"illusory idealists" -as cowards, betrayers, and shadows of gunmen. He instead upholds the "strong women" who struggle with the pains of the reality as the true heroes. On the other hand, the "mock-heroes" are the most neglected in the society like the clowns. Tne author satirizes their follies and at the same time satirizes the social problews through them. Each of the three type characters is victimized directly or indirectly by the brutality of war. The "illusory idealists" lose their lives while participating in independence movement; the "strong women" become sacrifices of their conflicts with the idealists. The "mock-heroes", who remain as idle spectators of the society, are characters who have also lost their human natures long ago that they too are victims. The author points out the negative sides of an indenpence movement by delineating the helpless and tragic situation of the poor at war. However O'Casey himself is not denying the Irish independence. He merely believes that the poor need human treatments and proper evaluations of their labor from the society more badly than the independence of the nation. Moreover, he has great sympathy for them who are being sacrificed in the name of Irish independence.
