Abstract

Although there has been a great deal of study on rural community in Korea, few scientific research has been done on the side-line job prospect. In order to understand the general and the particular characteristics of the subsidiary job in the rural community, this study is devoted to the description and analysis of the bamboo handicrafts in Dam Yang Districts. The selection of samples was picked among those who were engaged in the bamboo handicrafts. However, it must be confessed that the samples were arbitrarily selected by the interviewer. The specific objectives of this study are (1) to describe the general characteristics of the area (2) investigate the family composition of the bamboo workers (3) to survey the condition of the present subsidiary business (4) to describe their economic aspects (5) to understand their attitude to the neighborhood, social organization, their children and mass communication, The findings on the result of the above study reveal many interesting aspects. Namely, the motives of obtaining the side-line job are due to the economic depression and the eagerness to inherit the folk-crafts of forefathers. The side-line job in rural community has been enabling the use of surplus labours especially of women and youngsters on a small scale at home. The workers were generally unsatisfied with their jobs because of the small income, low price, difficult mass-production, the shortage of potential market, difficulty in obtaining the raw-materials and the scarcity of the hired workers. They are all discontented with the present conditions but most of them are intended to continue the side-line job in order to make some adds to their economic needs. It is true that the present side-line job helps to keep their housekeeping better than before. The present problems of the bamboo handicrafts are how to improve in the opening of the overseas market, how to mass production, how to buy the raw-material together, how to increase the wages of bamboo works, how to develop the skill and design, how to reform the electric equipment and utensil etc. In order to meet these facts, the government is supporting personal and material positively.
