(The) Winter's Tale 연구

Abstract

The Winter's Tale is in the stream of romantic literary tradition in both its structure and theme. The greatest patternal characteristics of The Winter's Tale is its two part structure which is divided into tragic and comic halves. This two part structure is a suitable pattern to contain the theme that a romantic hero saves himself after the long trials. Though Shakespeare creates Leontes who seems very simillar to a tragic hero, and Florizel and Perdita to the comic lovers, yet their role in The Winter's Tale is different either from Othello or from the two lovers in As You Like It. While the tragic passion of Othello goes through the process of birth - growth -death, the audience experiences the emotion of 'catharsis'. The focus of The Winter's Tale, on the other hand, is pointed toward where Leontes overcomes his inner trials called 'jealousy' and finally attains forgiveness from Hermione. The audience, therefore, participates in the journey of salvation with the romantic hero. In the love between Florizel and Perdita, the importance of marriage is emphasized while in the comedies, the moment of courtly love is admired. The role of Florizel and Perdita as the bridge of reconciliation between Leontes and Hermione is also different from that of the comic lovers. The world thus described in The Winter's Tale is an idealized romantic world in which the poetic justice of forgiveness and reconciliation is realized. In the introduction of this study, it is found out that The Winter's Tale is in the stream of romantic literary tradition, In doing that, the preliminary questions to study Shakespeare's romances such as the characteristics of The Winter's rate in its structure and character sketches, the difference compared with Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies, and finally the method of reading romance are examined. In chapter Ⅱ, it is studied how the tragicomic structure corresponds to the theme of time by examining the poetic passages of Leontes and the efforts of courtiers to prevent the tragic catastrophe of the king. In chapter Ⅲ, the atmosphere is described, in which the life rhythm is expressed in the latter half of The Winter's Tale. Finally, The Winter's Tale as Shakespeare's late romance is studied by examining the gradual process of restoration in human relationship through the art of penance and forgiveness which transforms the evil 'nature' of Leontes into 'higher human nature'.;장르상 로만스로 분류되는 The Winter's Tale은 그 구조와 주제에 있어서 해당장르의 제 특성에 합한다. The Winter's Tale의 형식상 가장 두드러진 특징은 비극의 전반부와 희극의 후반부로 양분되는 이부구조이다. 이 구조는 로만스의 주인공이 시련의 노정을 겪은 후에 구원에 이른다는 주제를 담기에 적합한 양식이다. Shakespeare는 The Winter's Tale에서 비극의 주인공과 유사한 Leontes를 등장시키고 희극의 주인공 연인 역에 Perdita와 Florizel을 기용하지만 그들의 역할은 Othello와 As You Like It의 주인공들과는 다른 것이다. Othello의 비극적 열정이 생성-성장-소멸의 과정을 겪는 동안 관객이 체험하는 것은 정화의 정서였다. 반면에 The Winter's Tale에 있어서 초점은 Leontes가 질투라는 고난을 극복하고 용서를 받는 곳으로 향한다. 따라서 관객은 Romantic hero의 구원의 여정에 동참하게 되는 것이다. Perdita와 Florizel의 사랑도 희극에서처럼 courtly love의 찰나적 순간을 구가한다기 보다는 차후 결혼의 중요성이 강조되고, Leontes와 Hermione의 화해의 매개체 역할을 한다는 점에서 희극의 주인공과 구별된다. 이렇게 Shakespeare가 The Winter's Tale에서 그려낸 세계는 전기의 비극과 희극과는 다른 용서와 화해의 시적 정의가 실현되는 로만스의 세계이다. 본 논문의 서장에서는 The Winter's Tale이 로만스 문학 장르에 속하는 근거를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그럼으로서 로만스의 구조적 특성과 독특한 인물묘사기법, 작가의 비극 및 희극과의 차이점과 아울러서 로만스의 관람법등을 고찰한다. Ⅱ장에서는 작품의 비희극 구조와 시간의 주제와의 일치를 Leontes의 대사와 주인공의 비극을 막으려는 주변 인물들의 노력을 중심으로 살펴본다. Ⅲ장에서는 작품의 Ⅳ막을 중심으로 하여 순환하는 생명의 리듬이 표출되는 방식을 살피고, 인간의 본성(nature)을 참된 인간성(true human nature)으로 변화시키는 회개와 용서의 기술(art)을 통해서 점진적으로 회복되는 인간관계의 양상을 고찰함으로써 Shakespeare의 후기 로만스극 The Winter's Tale을 파악한다.
