Abstract
This thesis is an attempt to review the deschooling theory of Ivan D. Illich from the perspective of educational theology and to evaluate the prospects for the direction and role of educational theology in future society, Ivan D. Illich raises a radical question regarding every conventional assumption. This radical question which arises from his interest in man's growth and full development is directed toward the system born from modern scientific technology and industrialism and its consumptive ethos. Thus, Ivan D. Illich predicts the collapse of industrial society using the "institutionalization of values" as an analytical notion and views the new man and society which will subsequently evolve. Modern society in which values are institutionalized is a society of Premethean man who is manipulated by institutions. Illich proposes to set limits on growth beyond the second watershed and thereby to create a convival society through cultural revolution which converts manipulative tools into convivial tools, and enables the demise of Promethean man and the birth of Epimethean man, the man of hope. Illich's foregoing vision of future society and the new man is translated into concrete terms by his deschooling theory. Through conversion into a new learning network consisting of skill exchanges, peer matching and reference services, equalization of educational opportunity, distribution of equal public education funds, establishment of self-determination over learning ahd separation of education from schooling. Such new learning network is totally different from the current obligatory schools which monopolize education(educational opportunities, educational resources and public education funds), reproduce consumptive and class society and function as places creating and concealing various myths about society. As defined by L.M. Russell, the purpose of contemporary Christological education is to engage in Missio Dei purporting to recover true humanity. Therefore, this thesis regards Illich's deschooling theory and Russell's educational theology as converging at the two points of "recovery of true humanity" and "pursuit of new community". This thesis also regards those two converging points as the two tasks of Christological education. Furthermore, this thesis regards the educational theology of L.M. Russell as providing a theological principle and the deschooling theory of Ivan D. Illich as providing a scheme or method for implementing such theological principle. A Christological education which determines its direction based on the foregoing perspective is a Christological education evolving toward deschooling. First, it is a Christological education engaging not only in research for a new learning method which contributes to the liberation of man and the formation of a new human community, but also structural reform enabling such research. Second, it is a Christological education with people in its context and which is concerned about equal educational development for the uneducated. Third, it is a Christological education pursuing structural reform of Christological education itself; this is deschooling of Christological education. When Christological education is interested in deschooling a concrete reform, then it advances one dimension of behavior beyond the dimension of human knowledge and jug-tice. By doing so, it develops a new educational mission with the ultimate purpose of welfare for the community and liberation of people, focussing its interest upon social issues and structure.
